This is hands-down our favorite local restaurant. Sam and Joanne are wonderful, and they have a really great selection of comfort food that's beautifully made. Their baked goods are also superb--try the "Brownies banned by Bloomberg," which are fudgy and rich and filled with chunks of Butterfinger bar. Our favorite meal is the corned beef sandwich--cooked for three days in brown sugar and Dijon mustard. We call it "meat candy." They're also famous for their signature veggie burgers. Bring your own wine. Closed Tuesdays.

The BEST Mexican food I've had outside California. Seriously. It's in a strip mall but totally worth the drive to Wappingers Falls. Try their Mexican Street tacos, and the margaritas if you have a designated driver

What's great about having Poughkeepsie as our nearest station is that you can get here via Amtrak from Penn Station in NYC, but we're also the last stop on the Metro-North Hudson line trains out of Grand Central, which are far more reasonably priced.
Look for the island with the castle on it near Fishkill. It was built by a man who started a salvage company for Civil War munitions and explosives, but the town wouldn't let him build a warehouse because they were afraid his stock would explode. So he built the castle on an island and painted a large advertisement facing the train. The town was right--his stuff exploded one day rather spectacularly, making the castle a romantic ruin.
