The Special Collections building and Museum houses and displays objects, photographs, art, and textiles that contributed to the County's 300-year history, beginning with early Native Americans to colonization, the Civil War, leading up to the 21st century. Spotsylvania County is best-known as the "Crossroads of the Civil War," where four major battles were fought: Spotsylvania Court House, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Fredericksburg. The Museum sits on eight acres owned by Spotsylvania County, buffered by land owned and operated by the American Battlefield Trust. The battlefields feature wayside exhibits and a recreational hiking trail network. Special events, programs, and demonstrations are held throughout the year at the Museum's outdoor space.
