Echo Mountain Trail

Why locals recommend it

They say LA doesn't have a lot of history, but this trail certainly does. In the 1800s there was a hotel on top and to get there you had to take a tram to go up over 1,000 feet. Now you walk six miles and it's really pretty. At the peak there are hotel and railway ruins and huge views of the city and the mountains. I love this one. Take the Sam Merrill Trail from Lake Avenue in Altadena. I would recommend starting in the morning, that way you’ll be in the shade much of the way up.

If you're looking for a good day of hiking, jump onto Echo Mountain Trail. It will take you up Mount Wilson and you'll see the remnants of the Mt. Lowe Railway and the ruins of a grand hotel resort from a long bygone era.

Leads to a cool lookout point located on an old burned down hotel. This also connects to many other trails in the San Gabriel mountains.

On hotter days, try and be off the mountain before noon, otherwise all the shade is gone

Go to the top of Lake Ave and start hiking. Good 5 mile round trip hike to the top and back.

You can hike during the day or at night. This is an iconic trail that leads up to an old hotel that was destroyed by wind and fire and was eventually abandoned. Lots of remnants still remain and expect lots of visitors. We enjoyed hiking here at night when we lived in Pasadena.
