This is a brisk 1 1/2 hour walk from La Maison de la Tour. The hermitage of Saint Etienne de Pomers is located above the village of Villerach, perched on a rocky promontory surrounded by steep slopes. • Originally, it was the chapel of a small count's castle in the 9th century; abandoned then ruined, this castle disappeared in the 15th century under a huge landslide. • The hermitage and chapel are now repaired after a long period of abandonment until 1970. It is the work of an Orthodox hermit who then settled there and who still takes care of it. • Architecturally, it is a single, high nave building, covered with a barrel vault. Its apse is deep, semi-circular. The walls were doubled in the 11th century in order to be thick enough to support the vault made at that time. In the thickness of these walls were made the five niches that can still be seen. • The chapel contains an original carved stone altar. It was used for a while as a slab at the entrance to the chapel.
