Twilight in the superbly scenic Peak District finds us just steps from Hathersage, a very old village that inspired Charlotte Brontë when writing her classic novel Jane Eyre. Just as the surrounding nature sends Jane ‘straight into the heath’, today the rambling, rocky moors still invite exploration. Easy hikes reveal expansive views over the Hope and Derwent Valleys, and in late summer, the moorland is carpeted with purple heather. Rugged counterpoints to this soft splendour jut up at regular intervals: here we see the gritstone outcrop called Over Owler Tor, one of many 'tors', or rocky hills, in the area. This combination of jagged and delicate hints at what awaits visitors in the rest of the Peak District National Park.
