Make sure you check the timetable as this is seasonable. I recommend catching the train to Goathland, then walk back to Grosmont, it’s a 2.5/3hrs walk following the old train track through the woods. If you do opt for the walk, there is a tiny pub at Beck Hole to stop for a pint and a few pubs in Grosmont to whet your whistle before you catch the train back to Whitby. Alternatively (and cheaper) just take the kids down to the station to see the trains come in and go...
