Walk from the Aurelian walls to Monte Celio and discover a hidden treasure. Santo Stefano is an early Christian church in a unique round form, probably repurposing an even older pagan Roman temple. The Basilica di Santo Stefano Rotondo al Celio is one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the world. Don’t expect a typical church, since everything is different in this one: a round church, hidden in a small Celio street, lush palm trees in its garden.

This church is the oldest with circular plant in Rome. Beautiful frescoes by Pomarancio (late XVI century) depicting scenes of the martyrdom of saints. Some scenes can be a little dramatic so consider before going with children

Hidden behind Colosseum on the Celio hill this round shaped basilica is among the earliest in Rome - you can tell it by rather modest decoration and unusual architecture. Pay attention to colonnade and the frescoes depicting cruel tortures of christian martyrs. What's nearby: Colosseum and Villa Celimontana public park.
