The zaros lake, is created by waters that run from the springs of Votomos. Around the lake there is a recreational area with tables and benches, an information board and signs everywhere. You must not miss having a coffee or even a meal on the pier which the municipality has built on the shore of the lake under the deep shade of the plane trees. The local specialty is salmon and trout grilled over an open fire. If you like walking, from here you can relatively easily get to the forest of Rouvas through a well marked path by first passing the church of Saint Nicholas.

The lake of Zaros hosts a number of wild animals, many types of birds, turtles and above all else, it has very big brown trouts. It is perfect for couples or for families as children can play in the adjacent park and all could sit in the cafeteria that is looking at the lake.

Zaros is a traditional cretan village 30 min. drive up to the hill under the mountain of Psiloritis / Idi. You can enjoy the nature and a peaceful walk around the beautiful lake. For the brave ones you can take the trail up to the mountain which leads to Rouvas Forest and an old church of Saint Nikolaos. Its worth visiting!

Zaros lake is a beautiful scenery surrounded by mountains. The village owes its popularity to its homonymous Lake and nearby gorge. To be more specific, it owes it popularity to the famous “Zaros” table water brand. Zaros table water actually flows from the nearby springs, which in turn pour their water into the lake. Zaros Lake is artificial. It was designed and shaped by the Forest Service in 1987. The idea was to store the water from the great Votomos spring (this is why Zaros Lake is also called Votomos Lake) and other smaller springs that originate from Psiloritis Mountain. The idea was more than good and the outcome was more than helpful to the whole area. Today, Zaros is not only famous, but it has become a pole of attraction for many visitors, both locals and tourists, who want to admire the beauty of the landscape and the… taste of the trouts and salmons fish-farmed in the lake and served by the local tavernas.
