Tips from locals
Built in the 17th century to protect the coast from the pirates of North Africa, it is located on a cheese-shaped rocky hill, thus obtaining the name Castelo do Queijo (Cheese Castle).
The Castelo do Queijo is the name by which the Forte de S. Francisco Xavier is also known. This "alternative" name for the Fort is due to the fact that the building was built on a round granite rock, and with a shape similar to that of a cheese.
Next to the Beach and the Transparent Building with a lot going on. A lot of cafes, restaurants, bars, in this area.
