Enjoy the peaceful surrounds and breathtaking views at the Waipahihi Botanical Reserve. Multiple walking tracks through various native and non-native trees. Top tip: Go at sunset to enjoy unbeatable views of the lake from the top of the gardens.

A great spot for a picnic or a quiet stroll. The reserve is situated high on a hill with occasional views over Great Lake Taupo & the mountains of the Tongariro National Park. The reserve is free to visit and is filled with native trees and plants that are developed and beautifully maintained by dedicated volunteers.

Across the road is the walking path into the Botanical gardens, if you follow the path to the top of the hill then turn right when you hit the sealed road. ( 10-15 min walk) Walk along the road past the seat and about 1 min later you will see the path on your right which meanders through the fern gardens.( 10-15 min) All the paths are good quality and all weather. At the end you can either turn left back into the gardens, turn right and walk back down beside Shepherd Rd or turn around and walk back the way you came. If at any point you get lost there is a loop road which will take you back to Shepherd rd ( full walk around the road would be approx 30mins) To bike around the gardens come out of our driveway and turn right. Pedal up the hill and the entrance to the gardens is on the corner on your left. Bike up the driveway up and follow road signs. ( 10 min approx.) There is a wonderful view of the lake at the first seat and spectacular views of the mountains from the second seat and the memorial park has beautiful old trees and picnic tables.
