This beautiful reserve is well worth a visit. Take the easy 10 minute return stroll or head upwards for a fairly steep ascent of 30 minutes for views of the Kapiti coast.

The Barry Hadfield Nikau Reserve is known for its impressive nīkau palms. From the car park, you can take a short 10-minute loop walk through these stately palms. This loop is easy, accessible, and suitable for buggies. A stepped track leads to panoramic views of the Kāpiti Coast and Kāpiti Island. Because of the steps, it’s not suitable for strollers. But, it is a short walk, so most kids will be able to take part. As you walk, you’ll be immersed in a variety of flora. Keep an eye out for the various birds that inhabit this space. There’s a picnic table at the top, an excellent place to take a break and enjoy the view.

Explore the stunning nikau palm forest along the walking trails of the Barry Hadfield Nikau Reserve. Follow the 1.2km loop bush walk, which takes about 30 minutes to complete, as you discover streams and small waterfalls on your way to a lookout. Location: From the south, turn off State Highway 1 at the Lindale turnoff just north of Paraparaumu. The reserve is on the left before the road goes under SH1. From the north, take the Lindale turnoff north of Paraparaumu and follow the sign at the roundabout to Nikau Valley, take the first left with signs to the Nikau Reserve and follow the short road to the car park.

Beautiful, unique walk among the nikau palms. It's a short walk, but steep! Lots of stairs to climb, but well worth it for the fantastic views from the top. See the whole of Paraparaumu and beyond, as well as the 4 islands on the Kapiti Coast (look out for the 3 smaller islands in front of Kapiti Island). On a nice day, you will see the South Island (Nelson/Marlborough) in the distance and if you're really lucky, you might spot Mt Taranaki or Mt Ruapehu to the north.
