This is a great place to go alone or take the kids and learn about the local fauna. They have events frequently, so check out their event calendar to see if they have any going on while you're here!

Approximately 90% of the sea turtle eggs in the US are laid in Florida. Because of the huge number of sea turtles at nest on our area beaches and at forage in the Indian river lagoon, a group of concern Brevard County citizens, in 1984, formed a grassroots organization to help protect them. This group, the sea turtle preservation Society was incorporated in 1986. The statement was simply helping sea turtles survive. Brevard county is a very important natural habitat for marine turtles. The county is unique because the Atlantic beaches and the Indian River Lagoon system spans its entire 72 mile length. This strategic location serves as nesting and foraging sites for three species of sea turtles, the loggerhead, the green turtle and the leather back.

Every summer, hundreds of turtles come to the beaches of Brevard County to lay their eggs. If you are here from June through August at night, you may get a chance to see them! The Sea Turtle Preservation Society hosts turtle walks where you can learn all about the turtles and get a few glimpses of them. If you are especially lucky, you might see some sea turtles hatch! I have seen this and it is an awesome sight. You will need to make reseveration long in advance as the tours fill up quickly

Just walk down to the beach before dawn from May to October and you may catch sight of a turtle returning to the ocean after laying her eggs in a nest. During the day it is easy to spot turtle tracks - you can't miss them!
