Beautiful, the setting is absolutely lovely. Located about 5-10 minutes walking from the parking spot (the path is cobbled and shadowy). The entrance fee is only 3€.
This is the main archaeological site of the island. It preserves the remnants of the great past of Samothraki during Greek antiquity. This was a sanctuary of great importance, especially during the Hellenistic period. The partly-restored archaeological site of the ancient holy city was the center of Samothraki from 600-200 BC. The city was brought to its greatest glory by the family of Alexander the Great, as it was their main religious venue. The legend is that Alexander was conceived here, as this is the place where his parents first met! The temple (the sanctuary itself) is considered to be among the most important centers of the ancient Greek religion and has been under restoration by Greek and American Archaeological institutions since the beginning of the 20th century. An absolutely must-see that will make your visit to the island more substantial and memorable.
