Tips from locals
A drive down into Big Sir is a must! While you're there, take the extra time to drive to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and walk the trail to the waterfall. It is an amazing site and well worth the drive.
Located 53-min (36miles) south of Carmel in Big Sur, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is 12 miles south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park on California's Pacific coast. A main feature of the park is McWay Falls, which drops over a cliff of 80 feet into the Pacific Ocean. The park is also home to 300-foot redwoods which are over 2,500 years old. Check ahead to make sure roads to Big Sur are open and that the Park is open to visitors. Note, like all places in Big Sur, this is a remote area and this Park has rugged walkways and trails. Don't stand on rocks/boulders along the waterline and stay out of the ocean and away from the waterline as fatally dangerous water conditions can exist. There is almost no cellphone service or internet service in and around the Big Sur area. Do not travel alone, bring layers, take water and snacks with you, and plan to be out of the Park, off the paths, and at your car before dark.
