My favorite restaurant, no matter what the occasion. The no-frills, brightly lit, family-run, all-day restaurant in Oakland’s Chinatown serves satisfying Sichuan and Hunan dishes, including many vegan options. If you can handle some heat, this place will make you very, very happy. My go-to is the silken tofu bowl with flaming red oil—a huge dish of soft tofu in a savory broth, topped with chile oil and cilantro, and hiding a bounty of tender greens.
Tips from locals
For a different type of Chinese food, try Sichuan cuisine that's famous for its "numbing" spicy dishes (the spice actually numbs your tongue!). This restaurant has slow service, but it's always packed because the food is so good.
One of the best food options in the the Bay is Szechuan, and Spices 3 is a fantastic option in the East Bay. Try the Won Tons in Red Oil and the Salt + Pepper Calamari.
Authentic Szechuan food; if you've never had food from this part of China, you're in for a spicy treat. Cash only.
