It opened in 1963, and is home to many rare and endangered species, including big cats, primates and birds as well as a large number of invertebrates and fish species. The zoo is recognised for its work with threatened species. In recent years there have been births of a baby elephant and giraffe. You will find the zoo on Maldon Road, Stanway, Colchester CO3 0SL, just follow the elephant signs on the road.

If you enjoy zoos this is one of the best in the country. Go early to beat the crowds who tend to arrive around lunchtime. Buy your tickets online the day before to save around 15% on the (quite expensive) entrance fee. Details at: www.colchester-zoo.com
