“What an amazing experience we had at the Utupoa. Spectacular beach, quality accommodations, wonderful food and a truly unique familial vibe. My husband and I are generally independent travelers who don’t seek out a b&b experience, but Utupoa was highly recommended by friends so we made the journey and loved every minute. We got to meet both hosts, Joyce (my hero) and Tim (my other hero), who are an extremely kind and interesting couple who make you feel like family. Their daughters were visiting at the time as well - both very cool and kind and welcoming. We treasured the experience getting to know their whole family along with a dozen other guests from around the globe. Highly recommend you book a visit and we hope to visit again. Thanks Joyce & Tim!”
Our apartment is in the old centre of lively Stonetown; the house is Indian style, spacious with two balconies; fits a family of 2 -4 persons, situated near sea, shops, musea & restaurants. Staying here will be a real cultural experience, karibuni
“Brenda's apartment has been furnished with great attention to detail and the decoration was not spared. This gives the apartment an individuality that you miss in most hotel rooms. What you cannot see in the photos is the ceiling height of over 5 meters, which triggers a certain "wow" effect when you enter the apartment. The apartment has two balconies, one to the street and one to the staircase, which is open upwards, so that there is always a light breeze. The kitchen is well equipped, there is even an espresso maker and a coffee grinder. Upon arrival, water bottles are ready, as well as the popular Zanzibar powdered coffee and tea. The bathroom equipment, fittings and ceramic parts are better than in many hotels. The bathroom has a large window, and if it is open, there is also a slight draft here. The beds, even if they are not king size, are comfortable and have mosquito nets. If you not only book this apartment for a short trip to Stonetown, we were in Stonetown for three weeks, you can also enjoy the room service, which is carried out by Bibi Awalda twice a week. The apartment is maintained and kept clean, and the fresh towels even smell pleasant. At this point, many thanks to Bibi Awalda for her really good service. And also to Bwana Salum, who is responsible for the "airport shuttle". Conclusion: A gem, in the middle of the old town, behind the old Ford. From here everything can be reached on foot within 5-10 minutes.”
Ngalawa are traditional trimaran dugouts used by Matemwe fishermen whose white lateen sails have graced our blue lagoon for centuries. We designed this ensuite bedroom as a tribute, indeed from the timbers of one we once sailed.
“We have no words to describe our wonderful stay at Utupoa. Meeting Tim and Joyce was an absolute honor, they are truly fantastic! Every night we joined them for dinner, together with other guests and we had a lovely time getting to know them and sharing different experiences. The food, cooked by the wonderful Aziza was delicious every single meal and she was extremely accomodating to our vegan diet and everybody elses needs! Matemwe is the perfect location. Utopoa is surrounded by the most enchanted beach with beautiful clear blue water and overall peace! We will definitely stay with Tim and Joyce again and we highly recommend this place to anybody going to Zanzibar (Unguja).”
