Barbrook's Victorian chapel & school flourished for many years, but when we came to live here in 1998 the building needed careful repair and a new use. We fell in love with this place and project, slowly converting it into a large, comfy, and hospitable home for our family and friends to enjoy. Now we'd like to share our enjoyment of our special home with you. Choose from 2 rooms (see also Annie's Room @ Chapel Hill) for a great base - and breakfast! - while you explore Exmoor by the sea.
“A quirky building - not what I judged it to be originally - but it exceeded my expectations. A very large metal Crocodile on the veranda to meet you - a good icon to tell you which house it is. It is an old converted Chapel and has been done so well. It is surrounded by woods to the rear and sides and has rolling trees wherever you look. There is a gate opposite the house which takes you down into the woods with a pathway running alongside the fast running stream. If you love nature - you will love it there.”
I have recently fitted out the shepherds hut to create a warm comfortable & relaxing space to unwind & get away from the hustle & bustle of modern life, while still having the convienience of electricity, full size double bed, log burner & kitchen area. There is a newly renovated private toilet/shower room in an adjacent barn. The shepherds hut is set on our small holding, in its own garden with table chairs bbq/fire pit, private parking & separate entrance.
“What a great guy Nigel is couldn’t have been more friendly and accommodating. His wife’s homemade delicious flapjack and biscuits were such a heartwarming touch and wine! The hut is fantastic absolutely immersed in picturesque Exmoor scenery you can hear the river. The bathroom was highly equipped and everywhere was sparkling clean. Wish we had stayed more than one night!!! We’ll be back for sure!! Highly highly recommend. For walkers you can walk directly from the hut to watersmeet and beyond to the coast at lynmouth or further upstream, great links. Excellent little kitchen too with an induction hob for cooking up a treat in the hut.”
Ground Floor Studio Apartment. Great sea views, quiet location.
“I didn’t stay at Sarah’s as it was a Christmas present for my daughter and her boyfriend. My daughter said that it was lovely, cosy and cute, with everything that they could have needed or wanted. She said that they had all that they needed ie it was very well equipped, which was just as well as they were there in the ‘worst weather’ that Devon and the west has experienced for many years. There were ‘things to do’ in the apparent ie games etc, so they had a lovely time, even though they couldn’t go out and walk anywhere. My daughter said that the apartment was spotlessly clean and very comfortable, the view from the garden was gorgeous, if a little stormy, but that just added to the cosiness of it all.”
