The Captain's Quarters is a two storey, luxury romantic getaway, an 1894 Heritage Log House on 10 secluded acres of our organic Cable Bay Farm mid-island on Galiano. It is beautifully restored with fine woods, fully equipped & very PRIVATE especially for couples with its own Hottub sunken into a spacious wood front deck.

The space
Our Heritage Log House is the original farmhouse on the property once 120 acres at the turn of the 20th century. It has a lovely vaulted natural fir ceiling upstairs in the master bedroom with a queen-sized Norwegian sleigh bed, a full sofabed, charming clawfoot porcelain bathtub, standing antique mirror, vanity & triple mirrors. All the doors and windows are custom-made from fine yellow cedar by a local craftsman and our Captain's Quarters looks out onto the main field here at Cable Bay Farm where local food crops are grown.

An open-plan downstairs leads into a sitting room area with a third bed, a double sofabed, Napoleon fireplace, dining table and chairs and full kitchen facilities with modern Elmira electric stove, microwave, refridgerator, coffee machine/bean grinder etc as well as a proper half bathroom on the main level. CQ's own chest freezer is also provided.

The Log House is beautifully finished throughout using teak, fir & yellow cedar. The Captain's Quarters sleeps 4-6 comfortably (with additional mattresses available upon request) there is wireless Internet & old world charm. The House is 800 sqft with an authentic ship’s ladder set between the two decks. The Captain's Quarters is very PRIVATE with its own Hottub for the exclusive use of our guests. We welcome children over 5 and love pets. Dogs adore our property as there is plenty of room for them to run! There are no other rental accommodations nearby, we have mostly honeymooners, couples and families coming to enjoy a little rest and relaxation.

Guest access
Our Guests have their own private driveway which leads in from McCroskrie Road to a parking area beneath a grove of tall red cedar trees next to the Captain's Quarters. Guests also have a large lawn area behind the Log House and a spacious front wood deck where a private Hottub is sunken. The hottub operates yearround for our guests (see photos).

Other things to note
Laminated detailed maps of all the local hiking trails are stored in a mahogany box on the coffee table for guests to borrow whilst staying. Inside the Captain's Quarters are also a series of 19th Century photographs of the first family who built the log house in the winter of 1894. Captain McCroskrie, his Governess wife and children and memorabilia have been passed down to the present owners. The collection of artifacts tells part of the story of what life was like more than a hundred years ago here on Galiano. These were European pioneering farmers and Captain McCroskrie also plied the waters of the west coast captaining Passenger Steamships. His 1899 Passenger Steamer Master Mariner's certificate and even his 1894 marriage certificate take pride of place inside his first home. There are also early images of the Royal visit steaming through Active Pass and Sturdies Bay Ferry Terminal circa 1930 show old motorcar in the lineup to add to the ambience! The Captain's Quarters is a unique landmark on Galiano being one of very few period buildings still standing in tact and treasured.

Galiano Island is fun to explore, hike the Montague Harbour Provincial Marine park or the Bodega Ridge; bike the length of us and we highly recommend contacting Ben Miltner or his son Chessi and hire a seakayak or join one of their organized tours. It is one of the most wonderful ways to experience our Island from the water. Dine at the marvellous pilgrimme restaurant and then return to unwind in your own PRIVATE HOT TUB.

Cable Bay Farm’s fresh produce is COMPLIMENTARY for our guests - it's even more fun to come & pick some of our fresh organic vegetables & prepare your own dinners.... CQ also has its own chest freezer useful for longer stays. The Log House is a delight - so close to the big cities and yet a world away.... a sampling of late 19th century rural life, warm & inviting!

Neighbourhood highlights

The Captain's Quarters is mid-Island just above Retreat Cove in a charming rural setting which faces Southwest capturing the heat of the sun all day. There are no shops in our neighbourhood so guests are encouraged to pick up their supplies and provisions from local businesses located at Sturdies Bay Village before coming "up-island" to the Captain's Quarters.

Greetings from beautiful Galiano Island! 37 years ago I moved here to Cable Bay Farm with my husband and we've raised our two children mid-island at Retreat Cove. Our 1894 Heritage Log House has been lovingly restored and is the original farmhouse on the property. I happen to be a professional photographer; organic farmer & we are Seafood purveyors for our Galiano restaurants and the public at the weekly Saturday Market Insta gram @ seafoodgaliano and @ cablebayfarm
