The township is a major junction point in Northern Southland, offering tempting destinations in all four directions and therefore an ideally central location. Trout fishing in well-known waters such as the Oreti, Aparima, Waikaia, Mataura and Brightwater are all within easy reach. Fishing guides are available locally for you to contact at your own cost. Pop on over to the east to Gore, another fly fishing mecca or slide an hour south to Invercargill to beautiful Stewart Island. If action and adventure are your kind of thing, head north to Queenstown, a breathtaking one hour drive around the beautiful glacial waters of Lake Wakatipu. The world-famous Fiordland National Park is a wonderful drive to the west where you can find rugged granite-topped mountains and the glacial-carved fiords of Doubtful and Milford sounds. Locally in Lumsden, a must for visitors is the Bafe Bakery, world-famous for their wickedly delicious, American style donuts and scrumptious pies. You can also grab freshly made sandwiches from the supermarket for those who want to take a packed lunch. Alternatively, why not relax and drop into the local cafe, Route 6, which has taken its cue from the classic Route 66 American diners.
  • Great house with everything we needed and more. Pantry well stocked

    Emily2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • We spent a weekend at Shannon's and had a wonderful time. The apartment is filled with lots of useful amenities and the kitchen was great to use. Their house is stylishly touched with lots of nice pictures and a homey environment. Highly recommended!

    Eli2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Shannon's place is cosy and spotlessly clean with thoughtful touches like handmade soap for use and ideas on local things to do (which we greatly appreciated as our initial plans of visiting Milford Sound were dashed with the roads closed). Communication was quick and easy when we found that the Wifi was not working. Highly recommend staying at Shannon's!

    Thuy2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • Warm and cozy, the house was well equiped and comfortable. We can definitely recommend this to others.

    Linda2020-02-17T00:00:00Z

    Stuart2020-01-07T00:00:00Z
  • Nicely situated in the little village of Lumsden, the house is really really well equipped. Shannon was very careful about our well-being at her place. We really did appreciate the kitchen and its equipment, the games our kids played with, and the very comfortable beds. We do recommend this place, Shannon is a great host.

  • Great stay in Lumsden. Liked the amenities with the house, including a choice to use dryer or line dry our wash. Holiday decor was a lovely touch as we arrived Christmas Day. Location was perfect as we did not have set plans, only Milford Sound. Centrally located to visit Catlins, Milford Sound, Queenstown, etc. Liked being in small town without hustle and tourist bustle in other areas. Thanks so much.

  • It’s a classic original house. Very tidy. Nana provided everything we needed, including breakfast. It’s a bargain

    Crystal2020-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • Despite the age of the house it was clean comfortable and provided everything we needed. Nana opened her home to us and let us cook dinner and she provided cereal and toast for breakfast. The bed was comfortable and there is a portable heater in the room. Good shower pressure and hot water in bathroom. The toilet is separate from the bathroom but was not a problem. We would stay here again if we are in the area.

A home away from home with a touch of elegance. Family or couple. Come and enjoy country living close to a township with pool, jacuzzi and sporting facilities. Great shopping at an unhurried pace. Brown trout & country music capital of the South. Within 2 driving hours to local ski mountains close to Queenstown.
The neighbourhood is family friendly, excellent climate to fish the local rivers for trout, go bush, enjoy nature, and Invercargill city is only a 3/4 hour drive South then onto Bluff and Stewart Island. The Catlins beach for surfing is a similar driving distance where a days surf followed up with a sauna back at our place in the en-suite bathroom.
  • Nice place and very nice hosts. Very difficult to give other travellers good advice since we have this COVID19 lock down but if you look for a quiet place close to nature then this is it.

Studio self-contained unit above a double garage. Quiet and tranquil as accommodation is set back from the road. Private entrance with ample parking. Enjoy the entire 1.5 acres of landscaped grounds. Spectacular scenery, with views over farmland towards the river.
Open planned studio/loft with walk-in wardrobe, shower and bathroom. Double bed with views over farmland. BBQ available during the summer months. Small kitchenette with cooking hob.
  • We only had the opportunity to stay a single night and wish we could have stayed longer. This is a trout fisherman’s dream. Private access to some amazing trout water. The apartment was perfect. Comfortable bed and a great view of the working farm and plenty of space. I ended up fishing until dark then went into town for dinner and the pub was closed. We ended up driving back down to Gore for a late dinner. That was all my fault. We would definitely come back and stay a few days.

A country getaway that is nestled in the heartland of the Southern Scenic Route and near the gateway to Fiordland. This retreat is suitable for all travellers, horse lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. If you are after a real New Zealand farm experience make a booking. Depending on the time of year there will be different things to do and see on the farm. Shearing a sheep, feeding lambs or calves, horses, always something to do on the farm, no riding the horses from February 22 till March 2 thanks
Having had over 30 groups through now all those who only stayed one night wished they had booked 2 as there are so many things to do like fishing the Waiau River runs just below our farm and you can easily walk down there. We have a helicopter pad next door called Heli My Way that can do scenic flights plus take you hunting or tramping. We have the Wairaurahiri Jet which can take you over the deepest lake in New Zealand Lake Hauroko and then down the steepest falling River in New Zealand The Wairaurahiri river A truly amazing experience. The Clifden limestone caves Are just down the road and are very popular all year round and three. The Clifden Suspension bridge is also very popular. For the more energetic there is the Hump Ridge track to have a go at. These are just a few of the things to do in the area but we are only a short distance away from other beautiful lakes and rivers etc. We are one hour from Invercargill and one hour in the other direction from Te Anau plenty to see and do in both places. Early September to late October is the best time to see the baby lambs and calves.
We are 10 minutes away from to Tuatapere which has some nice eating spots and a good coffee to be found. Not to mention a lovely drive along the coast line
  • A bit chilly, but for the area it offers incredible views and an isolated area to enjoy yourselves!

  • Suzie's place was beautiful and the sheeps in the yard made my day 😊

    Kesho2020-02-22T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved our stay here and yes we wished we’d booked longer! The views are breath taking and the house is spacious and super comfortable.

    Chantal2020-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at Suzie's place during part of our honeymoon and, like everyone else, wished we could have stayed a second night! The farmhouse is HUGE - it really can fit a lot of people comfortably, let alone the two of us - and the parlor is to die for. Traveled across NZ and the sunrise here was the best we saw anywhere. Horseback riding was relaxing, and there's so much to do nearby. A wonderful, chill, time. Suzie is a great host with an awesome sense of humor and personality. Hope to be back one day.

    Pete2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Suzie's place is a gem. Set high on a hill, there are fabulous views all around. Huge house with a good kitchen and bathroom and a really comfortable bed. If you like horse riding you must go trekking with Suzie. Good horses and gear. We rode over the hills and down to the river. A great way to see the farm. Thanks Suzie for an unforgettable time.

Welcome to our cosy, warm private fully self contained spacious 1 bedroom guest house converted from a woolshed which is situated on our working dairy farm. It has 1 queen bed in the seperate bedroom, a lounge, kitchen & bathroom for the occupants and has everything you need for an overnight stay and to cook a meal if you prefer. It is located: 30km from Gore 40km from Waimumu 30km from Lumsden 98km from Invercargill 100km Te Anau 130km from Queenstown (International airport)
Our place is a work in progress so we are always working on changes and improvements so photos may differ slightly when you arrive but only for the better :) It is very spacious with living, dinig, kitchen and separate bedroom.
You will be staying on a working farm so will hear occasional "farm noises" like cows mooing etc
  • This must be one of the most complete airbnbs we ever visited, with an impressive attention to detail.

    Jef2019-04-14T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay here! Such a unique experience. We were very cosy and comfortable.

    Anne2019-03-11T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful little cottage amongst a picturesque setting of rolling farm land. The place is spacious with a full kitchen. There definitely is no road noise. We were happy with it's location and took day trips to explore in every direction. In doing so we also found it easy to check email at libraries in towns along the way.

    Diane2019-03-05T00:00:00Z
  • Sue's house is large and the whole is available, with everything you need. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the city life. However, it is necessary to pay attention to mosquitoes because it is far from the city, so it is best to buy enough rations before check-in. The kitchen is very convenient and what equipment is available. The only suggestion is to move the washing machine in. The taste of the laundry area is really unbearable.

    Neal2019-01-15T00:00:00Z
  • It was such a nice experience for us "city-people" to stay on a farm, we slept very well and woke up to amazing scenery. Definitely a recommendation.

Situated on a working sheep and beef farm overlooking a beautiful duckpond with gorgeous mountain and farm views, this cozy retro sunny cottage has a big deck and a well set up kitchen for self catering. We are situated close to the 'round the mountains' cycle trail and fantastic fishing rivers, with only an hours drive to Queenstown, Invercargill and Fiordland. So if you are looking for something unique, tranquility, beautiful rural views, and duck pond watching, this is the place for you.
Duckpond cottage is off the beaten track where only the sounds of the farm animals and ducks can be heard. In the evening sit on the deck and look at the stars and the sunrise in the morning

My place is close to Town of Gore,Hokonui hills,Dolomore park,Mataura river,Croydon bush. You’ll love my place because of the cosiness, the views, peacefulness. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, and furry friends (pets). We are 2 hours south from Queesnstown, 1,5 hours from Te Anau and 1,5 hours from the Catlins...and 1 hour from the sea...(Invercargill). 35 minutes from Tapanui, where you can do also amazing walkes.... Continental breakfast is included.
My passion and hobby is cooking....if you have a special diet , gluten free or you are vegetarian,.... i accept the challange...
Just something you need to know. You will wake up with chickens, rooster calls and we have sometimes the cows that are looking at you. Lydia , the goat is realy nice but likes to come and visit. We also have 3 lovely dogs , very kind but they sometimes use their voices...
  • Maggie and Yves’ hospitality went above and beyond! From delicious meals, to sweet gestures to make our stay more cozy, everything was thought of! We felt right at home. We really enjoyed the location being on the farm, getting to play with the dogs and go hiking nearby. Can’t wait for our next visit.

  • Simply awesome !!! A five star experience in a super efficient accommodation. Usually when writing reviews for AirBnb I strive to focus only on the actual accommodations. In Maggie’s case one would be remiss to not compliment the entire experience— all of which was wonderful. First - the accommodations are super comfortable, with strong WIFI in a wonderfully peaceful setting (just a short drive up a gravel road from Gore, which has countless amazing hikes and recreation opportunities surrounding it). Next, the “breakfast” beyond spectacular. It is more of a high-end smorgasbord from the finest hotel imaginable. Truly sets a new standard for excellence, and is an honor to receive. Lastly the hosts - Maggie, Yves (and their wonderful dogs!) are exceptionally kind, wise and considerate. A stay at this AirBnB is an experience of a lifetime and highly recommended for anyone who desires to be treated, and fed, like royalty. Thank you Maggie & Yves !

Sleeps two people in single beds. The Shepherds sleep-out shares the Red Shed facilities and the two outdoor baths! The loudest sound here is silence. Five minutes from Garston you’ll be immersed in 2 ,000 hectares of private High Country living. Sunrise and Sunset tours are available on request - travelling in our green jeeps. Ask if you would like more information. At the base of Welcome Rock is the ‘Red Shed’, the original woolshed lovingly restored with touches of home. It’s the wonderful indulgences, visitors say, that make the Red Shed special - like the 2 outdoor hot baths under the stars, a barbecue/patio area to enjoy homemade local fare. And of course the visiting birds, chooks or sheep dog puppies-in-training. Walking, Mountain Biking & Trout Fishing (The Mataura). Guests travel 4kms up a gravel road. This is a rural location. If it’s adventure you want, then stay right up the top of the mountain in the authentic Slate Hut or Mud Hut with magnificent sunsets, stars and panoramic views.
This is an isolated area, 4kms from the State highway 6. It is quiet and private. A real farm stay.
  • Really beautiful place it was. Really amazed by the fact that how these guys have transformed a shed into such a stylish looking space. Every little thing was given so much thought. You will find almost all the amenities inside the house. The location is a bit inside so it can be an issue if anyone will be reaching late night - other than that totally recommended.

  • What can I say? My girlfriend and I loved staying here—the double bath tubs out front were a treat for sure. Got a few laughs out of the roosters in the AM also. To their credit, they woke us up at a reasonable hour :)

  • We had a lovely time at Leane’s place. It was everything we needed and close to where we were meeting friends and soon to be family. The house is clean with very comfortable beds and lots of space for seven grownups. The garden is lovely too with very friendly sheep in the next door paddock!

  • Supremely peaceful country retreat! Wonderfully comfortable place (with strong WiFi) surrounded by serene farms, just a short drive from countless recreational opportunities (including the Fiordland National Park) ! The friendly sheep in the backyard pasture are so tame they gently nibble bread right from your hand ! The outdoor fireplace is simply awesome and a great place to contemplate the peace and quiet of country living ! Was fortunate to meet Lance and Leane (extraordinarily nice hosts with hilarious stories) and am appreciative of their guidance and generosity. Highly recommend a stay at this superb accommodation!

  • Clean, tidy and comfortable home. At this time being renovated but doesnt affect stay. Owner is friendly. Quiet environment out in country area close to Gore. Great place to relax or use as a base to get to other activities.

    Darius2019-12-27T00:00:00Z
  • Was lovely to meet Pam and stay in her house. Plenty of room inside and out for families, perfect spot for a summer bbq in the garden. We felt very well looked after and highly recommend the back master bedroom for the excellent mattress/comfort! Great location between Queenstown and Fiordland if you want to see both areas and not pay a huge amount of money for accomodation. Be aware it’s a small town and the small variety of shops don’t open late nor is it an area for delivery so make sure you have your own supplies. Thanks Pam for a lovely stay and we would be happy to stay again.
