  • This place is very clean, stylish, and convenient. The host is quick to reply and our family has a very nice vacation stay.

  • We spent three nights in this lovely guest house. It was a great find. At first we were apprehensive that we might be a little isolated from a town centre but it was a great stopover for us to access the Cabot Trail. The house was so comfortable and roomy, the living area upstairs was quite expansive for a family. We also spent quite a lot of our time on the balcony, taking in the views across Margaree Bay. And then wandering down into the tiny community scattered around the shoreline of the bay. Our visit to the area of Margaree Bay and to the pristine Cape Breton National Park would have to be one of my best travel highlights.

  • Great space! Beautiful view and close to the park and water. Home was very comfortable - beds were great! Overall excellent experience.

  • The hosts were extremely efficient and attentive!!! Everything was far above our expectations: - the location - the amenities - the extras, lounge chairs, beach mats and boards And when we messed up our departure date, James helped us monumentally to find alternate accommodation in Antigonish, again a great place!!! Great job well done, James and Ranald!!! We really appreciate your attention to our needs.

Our little Garden Shed, as we've fondly named it, is a newly restored guesthouse perched on the hill over looking the beautiful Margaree valley and just off the Cabot trail.
The Garden Shed is a cozy space with beautiful views of the valley and lots of natural light. We've renovated the shed ourselves using many reclaimed materials including the original boards from our house (built in the 1860s). The main room has a woodstove and a ladder to a small loft area that has a double bed. The main room also has a futon couch that folds down into a double bed. The small kitchen is equipped for you to do your own cooking if you would like and has a hot plate, sink, toaster, kettle and mini fridge. There is NO running water in the shed, and no conventional bathroom. The bathroom is equipped with a composting toilet. We supply jugs of water that can be used for washing in the sink (there are drain pipes) as well as for drinking water. We have a rustic solar shower (camp bag shower) for the sunny days. In the cooler seasons, the space is heated by the woodstove. As this is the only heat source, guests should be comfortable operating a wood stove. Obviously, by principle, and especially since the guesthouse is located next to our family home, I need to mention that we expect everyone to respect the land and the house as if it was their own. *~Special Notes for the Winter Months~* So you're making the trip up to the highlands in the winter-lucky you! We have a real winter up here and its the perfect place for a ski adventure or explore the woods on snow shoes. We have some of the best snow in the province and could gladly point you in the right direction. On the other hand, why not just spend a few days cuddled up reading by the fire....A few important points for those that are considering visiting in the winter. -We do not plow our driveway in the winter. It is about a 50 meter walk from the parking place to guest house. -The Guesthouse is equipped with a woodstove for heat. You will be responsible for heating the guesthouse during your stay and should be comfortable operating a woodstove.
Just off the Cabot Trail we are close the margaree river, 10 minute drive to the coast and fabulous beaches, and 30 minutes drive from Cape Breton Highlands National Park. We are just minutes away from a grocery store and the dancing goat cafe
  • Such a beautiful space and beautiful view. Everything you’d need and more.

    Hilary2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • This spot was so nice! A beautiful view. The shed is more spacious than expected and is so cozy. Highly recommend.

    Sophie2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • The garden Shed was exactly as it's called. I was aware that it would be rustic and I didnt mind it at all. I found it more charming than I expected. We had a great time and I would highly recommend if you dont mind the simplicities and rustic charm.

    Chelsea2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful tiny house in the heart of the Margaree. Close to the river and other amenities. Looks much larger in real life! Will definitely stay again!

    Gioia2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • We had a nice stay at the shed. It was very cozy on a rainy night with the fire, and the loft bed was very comfortable! The best part was the location and view from the big window, it was so nice to see cows in the morning and all the fall colours. We didn't try the solar shower because we didn't have any sun, but were able to clean off a bit with the hot water from the stove. Would definitely recommend for people who are looking for a cozy cabin feel.

    Kayla2019-09-25T00:00:00Z
  • It was exactly what we needed, beautiful, cozy and restful. I definitely recommend it!

    Jillian2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely time at the Garden Shed! It's such a well thought out and cozy space that is nestled in a beautiful garden next to a gorgeous orchard. It has all the necessary amenities and the space is very well designed - the view from the loft is simply serene and peaceful! We will definitely be back! ~Sam & Sarah

    Sam2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • The Garden Shed is a cute small home with all the expected amenities and a fabulous view. The beds were quite comfortable and there was everything you needed, the hosts were great. If you don’t mind a bit of a rustic feel (no running water makes it feel a bit like glamping), you can have an amazing experience. Getting to Cheticamp and the national park was a breeze, and when you were done with the touristy thing, you had an escape to get away from the crowds.

***If you're an easy going, laid back, nature loving, friendly kind of person, then you'll enjoy this clean and cozy camper! If you prefer the finer things, are maybe considered a little high maintenance, usually stay at resorts when you travel and enjoy people waiting on you, then this probably isn't for you, so please don't book :) Welcome to Free Roots Farm an all-natural veggie farm located in rural Cape Breton. Located at the foot of the Cabot Trail, and just a short walk to the beach.
The camper is a 16', 1976 Skylark with a retro 60's/70's style remodel. The camper is supplied with electricity, cooking utensils, pots, pans, kettle, coffee maker, toaster, etc. And the wifi doesnt reach the camper, but is accessible on the property. The rental space is located on a non-certified organic produce farm just minutes from the Cabot Trail. We are a 5 min. walk to the rock beach and a beautiful cape (which has the most stunning sunsets), and 10 min. walk to a large sand beach. You'll find a composting toilet on the property and a shower in the main house (for guests staying 2 or more nights). We welcome people with pets as we have a couple of dogs ourselves. We also have a farm stand that offers seasonal produce from our gardens as well as local artisan crafts, baking, sea salt, and more. For those with a more relaxed schedule we suggest booking for more than one evening as the number one comment we receive from guests is that they wish they had booked a longer stay!
The location is fantastic for those wanting to do the Cabot Trail, spend time on the beach, or just relax and experience farm life. The area offers restaurants, fishing, boat tours, paddle boarding, sea kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, yoga, meditation, and a lot more.
  • Cute little trailer

    Katelyn2019-09-27T00:00:00Z
  • Loved this cosy camper. Had all we needed.

    Heather2019-09-26T00:00:00Z
  • Tierra was a fantastic host and the camper was amazing- it was a highlight of my trip.

    Stacey2019-09-23T00:00:00Z
  • We loved our stay in the trailer! It's in a fantastic area, with an amazing view and close to the beach, where you can explore both the sand beach or overlook the water from the cliffs (great sunsets!). Really cool experience being surrounded by farmland, and Tierra has the cutest dogs! Tierra was quick to answer any questions we had and is super friendly. The trailer had everything we needed for our nights stay, and even though it was a chilly night, she supplied us with a space heater to keep us toasty. Would stay again!

    Alannah2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • The place is well located, close to a beach and beautiful cliffs that we discovered. The fact that the host was so hospitable made us feel very good and our camper was located in a place where we had our privacy. We were 15-20 minutes from a village to do our grocery shopping. My boyfriend and I loved our stay and would definitely stay there again.

    Emylie2019-09-12T00:00:00Z
  • Tierra’s little camper was such a warm and welcoming space. My partner and I drove from Toronto, ended up driving through Hurricane Dorian, so the camper was a site for sore eyes! Tierra ended up offering us an extra night as the hurricane just wouldn’t quit! Their property is beautiful with views of the ocean and highlands all around. We went for a little walk to the coast line with even more incredible views. We will definitely visit again. She made our trip just that much more special!

    Jacky2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Small cozy trailer, 10 minute walk to an incredible sandy swimming beach. Loved seeing the gardens on the property. Very friendly hosts

    Fran2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • My friend and I were pleasantly surprised by the camper. It was more comfy/warm than we expected. A bit windy the night we were there so if you’re a light sleeper you may want to bring some earplugs! But it worked well for our purposes and Tierra was a great host. Great place to pull off the Cabot Trail for rest - would recommend.

This is one of the most wanted places to stay in Cheticamp. Private deck directly over your private dock with a view that people travel all over the world to be able to see. Walking distances to the best restaurants and bars in the area. The home is directly on the board walk therefore you don't have far to go for a quick morning stroll or jog. Everything you need for a relaxing stay will be included in this rental. You won't be disappointed!
  • This is a charming place with a stunning view in a great village.

    Zabrina2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • This rental is cheerful, clean, cute, well equipped and has an amazing location. We loved our stay even though it was for one night only - three days would have been better!

    David2019-10-16T00:00:00Z
  • Hands-down our most favorite place to stay on our 8-day trip! It's in an amazing location, right in the middle of Cheticamp with a perfect view of the water. Street parking is easy right in front, with both a ramp and stairs for easy accessibility. We loved the exterior and interior decor, and the space itself was very clean. The beds were comfortable with extra blankets -- which we used to stargaze outside on the balcony. Bathroom shower had great water pressure, and had a washer/dryer inside of it. The kitchen was well-stocked and we helped ourselves to the tea provided. Loved the books and board games! Overall, it had everything our family needed for our brief stay. We all loved it - it felt like a home away from home. And, of course Joeleen was very responsive and helpful. 100% would recommend staying here if you're visiting Cape Breton/Cheticamp. Worth the experience!

    Flo2019-10-10T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful view. Cosy and comfortable. Highly recommend!

    Wendy2019-10-06T00:00:00Z
  • The room was much larger than we anticipated! Everything was clean, bright and any basic supply you could imagine was supplied. The apartment is perfectly located - walking distance from all amenities, but positioned far enough back from the road that you cannot hear traffic. Ever the servers at the restaurant next door were amazing people! Quite understandable why it is the most wanted place to stay in Cheticamp!

    Rob2019-10-05T00:00:00Z
  • Joleen was a great host! My boyfriend and I were travelling with our two little boys and another couple and the space was perfect! The view was spectacular and the local restaurants and robins coffee shop were amazing! I would definitely stay in this space again!

    Krystle2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • Loved your place. Location was great. Very clean and comfortable. I'll remember it if I make it back this way!. Only problem was the rain keeping us of the deck with the awesome view!

  • Super cozy spot in the already super cozy Chéticamp. Right across the best restaurant-bar-café in town (which is unfortunately closed during winter). Very clean place, Janelle is super nice and very quick to respond. Would stay again any day.

    Randy2020-03-04T00:00:00Z
  • Janelle's place is a perfect spot to stay while in Cheticamp. It has all the amenities you need, it's in a great location, and Janelle is an expert on what to do/where to go. We'll definitely be staying here again!

    Jill2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • My girlfriend and I stayed here for one night and really enjoyed it. Janelle is extremely friendly and accommodating. I would stay again and probably will be back in the future! Thanks Janelle.

    Grace2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • Janelle and her companion are absolutely adorable and available. This little cabin is very nice, the bed super comfortable, the cleanliness is impeccable. Despite the wind, snow and very low outside temperatures, this studio is very well heated in winter. I highly recommend !!

My place is close to great views, family-friendly activities, the Margaree River, hiking and fishing. You’ll love my place because of the outdoors space and the comfy beds. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets). Located within walking distance of the grocery store and local library at the junction of Rte 19 and the Cabot Trail. Laundry facilities available.
  • This place is a perfect spot in Margaree, a short walk to the co-op market, great for anyone looking to visit the area, or drive the Cabot Trail. I hope to be back. Super easy check in, and the home had everything I needed.

  • Beautiful spot in a perfect location !!

    Andrea2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • The house is very good, just like the home, there is a 50km from the island park. There is a supermarket nearby. The house is on a hill. The road to the road is bad. Be careful.

    Guangjie2019-09-20T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely cottage, beautifully taken care of - very clean, with a great kitchen. Conveniently located close to food stores, restaurants and shops (not to mention the Margaree River for you salmon fishermen.) This was our second stay at the cottage, and there will be more to come on future trips to the island. Your host Emily is warm, helpful and attentive . A lovely place to base your visit to Cape Breton!

    Len2019-09-10T00:00:00Z
  • It is a cottage, however, actually likes a house on a big lot, with spacious kitchen, living room, washroom and two bedrooms and has every thing we need. One of the best places we have stayed for sure. Emily, we feel at home at your cottage. Many thanks.

    Simon2019-09-04T00:00:00Z
  • Very well stocked, very clean, very friendly. A great place to stay while visiting the cabot trail.

    Mike2019-08-31T00:00:00Z
  • Emily is a great host, very friendly, quick at responding to our messages and calls. We had a great time at her place. The location and cottage was as promised. We would recommend the place for those who want to stay close to cabot trail.

    Siddharth2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • if you forgot to pack your coffee or to grab it at the near grocery store (5min walk, if that), no worries, Emily has it stocked for you in the kitchen. She even had shampoo and soap for the whole family. Would definitely recommend and will most likely be back for our next visit in Cap Breton. A+++

  • The view from the livingroom was incredibly relaxing. We especially enjoyed watching the sunset over the ocean. The apartment was cozy and very private. We hope to return again.

    Susan2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • Gaston’s place was exactly as advertised. It was nice and clean when we arrived and had everything we needed. The apartment was just a short drive to the National park, which was one of the reasons we chose his place. Gaston and his wife were there to greet us when we arrived, and were both very welcoming and friendly. We both enjoyed our stay here and would happily stay here again if we ever get back out to Cape Breton.

    Carolyn2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Staying with Gaston has been wonderful. A perfect place for our working holiday. We traveled about and enjoyed this part of Cape Breton. Encourage all visitors to go to Mi-careme to create a mask and learn about this Acadian festival. For us this was a highlight along with the sunsets. Thanks again for a homey stay.

We live on a very peaceful and private 200 acre farm with wooded areas, open fields and waterways. Our closest neighbours are 1km away.
  • We thoroughly enjoyed our stay over the holidays. The trailer was clean, cozy and even decorated for Christmas. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals and the washer and dryer was convenient. The wifi didnt seem to be working and there is limited cable so I'd recommend bringing some boardgames/movies for rainy days. There were lots of interesting books to read however. All in all, a peaceful little place to stay in Cape Breton at an incredible value.

    Mary Lee2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • Anne’s place is a true gem! So scenic and relaxing. The house was the perfect size and it was sparkling clean and exactly as described. Charlie the cat was the sweetest and getting to see all of the baby cows made my day!! I would absolutely recommend Anne’s place and I can’t wait to stay again!!

    Marilou2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • It is basically located in the barn and gave us a really great experience. I've never stayed in a farm/barn and it was very pleasant. The host came to welcome when we arrived. Basic amenities were available in the kitchen and heating are individually operated in each room. There were tons of parking and instructions were provided hot to connect to WiFi, TV Cable etc. It is really quite in the morning and air is so fresh. It's an older place in the barn so interior is like in the 70's but it gave us a whole new experience. The space is almost like a RV home/mobile home/motor home size. We only stayed 1 night and it was nice in the morning to see the cows and able to take some really nice pictures.

    Susannah2019-10-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great spot, great hosts, Charlie the cat was an amazing host as well. Would definitely stay again next time we are on the island!

  • Anne's place is in a great location not far from the Cabot Trail. The apartment is spacious, clean and had all that we needed for a comfortable stay. The apartment is set in a farm against a lovely mountain backdrop which has beautiful fall colors right now. We enjoyed watching the cows grazed leisurely in the pasture. Charlie the cat came to say hi and bye. We loved him! We hope to be back again the next time we return to hike the Cabot Trail. Thanks for hosting us!

    Tania2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • Beautiful property and everything about staying here was easy. Property is nicely located, and the land it’s on is gorgeous. Had fun watching the cows graze and had a great conversation with the owner. Friendly people, super clean house and an overall comfortable stay. Good value. Thank you!

  • We loved the quiet and area of this little home. With limited mobility it was very easy to maneuver around the one floor. The home was very clean, with all amenities needed. The Tv is limited to only a few channels but Wifi is very good. The house is tucked in off a main highway, but not too far away. Thank you Anne!

Where the great Margaree River meets the sea, there is a picturesque working harbour. And located near the south end of the harbour bridge, the village of Margaree Harbour is one of the area's small gems. At the end of the road (400 meters) is Laurence's General Store and Post Office, the nerve center of the community. This store was started in the 1880's by the grandfather of the current proprietor, Mr. Fletcher Laurence who is both irrepressible and the "unofficial" mayor of Margaree Harbour. The village is a quaint cluster of clapboard and shingled homes huddled in the perfect spot; enjoy its busy yet peaceful harbour, its two stoic lighthouses, a fabulous beach and dunes, and the Cape Breton Highlands National Park in the distance. The beach is a great place to catch a sunset and rock formation known locally as the "Margaree Monster".
  • This is a well stocked home. The owners thought of everything for comfort and relaxation. The view is stunning from every room. One of the best homes we have stayed in over the many years of travel.

  • Kevin’s home is beautiful and in a great location. It is well designed, brand new, stylishly decorated and was perfect for our group of 4 couples. We added the bunkie to our stay and it was also well designed and very comfortable. The home is extremely well equipped allowing us to prepare and enjoy some wonderful dinners dining both outside and inside. We were even able to bbq a dinner when Hurricane Dorian knocked out all the power! Kevin was extremely helpful and responsive particularly when the storm arrived to make sure we were safe and as comfortable as possible. We would not hesitate to stay here again if we were in the area and highly recommend this lovely home to future guests.

  • Kevin and Cathy have a beautiful home! It’s spacious, super clean and full with all the amenities of home. Kevin is a wonderful host. He’s quick to respond to any questions. Fantastic location - not far from the Cabot Trail for hiking and sight seeing. We hope to visit again! Thank you for letting us stay there!

  • Stayed 3 days and nights in June 2019. 8 of us were in the area for Mom’s funeral. House is amazing!! new, modern, spacious, spotless, great beds, amazing kitchen, fantastic deck, breathtaking scenery, right on the Cabot Trail. Short walk to the beach and charming local general store that carries all the basics, and then some. Hosts were amazing. Constant communication and accurate instructions. 5/5 hosts. Can’t wait to return. Will definitely stay here again. Highly recommended by this frequent ABnB user. Richard and Kelly

  • This is a lovely home which has everything you could ask for. Lots of space and high quality. The hosts were very accommodating to our needs and were extremely responsive to any questions we had. The location is perfect if you love to golf. I highly recommend it.

  • Everything about our stay at Kevin and Cathy's home was fabulous. Even before booking, Kevin was so helpful with all my questions about the house, amenities and the local area. The house is brand new and the photos truly don't do it justice. The view is breathtaking and sunrises over the harbour are incredible. Some Airbnbs are clearly for renters only with cheap furniture and impersonal touches -- but not here. This is their holiday home and it shows from the quality of the furniture, the thoughtful touches and the fully equipped kitchen (including spices and condiments). There is an outdoor fire pit, BBQ, lobster pot, even some wood if you want to build a bonfire on the beach. The master suite is huge with its own TV, soaker tub and deck with view of the water. There are two bedrooms with king beds which can be converted into 2 singles, and 1 queen. Rooms exactly as described. Plush quality linens and towels. Kevin helpfully called me before our trip to confirm final details and supplied clear directions. The surrounding village itself doesn't have too much within walking distance (which makes it lovely and quiet) but there are several Co-op grocery stores within driving distance. Cheticamp is 20 minutes by car. Kevin can also give you the number of a local fisherman who can drop off lobster straight to your door. There is a very detailed and lengthy binder explaining how to care for the house. Please read it and keep the house in fantastic condition for all future visitors. We would stay again in a heartbeat. Thanks to Kevin and Cathy for a memorable family holiday!

  • Kevin was a great host, He communicated very well and made us feel like we were at home. He was very kind and generous with his property and is it absolutely beautiful. It was great spot to host a large party and everyone feel very comfortable. Thank you again Kevin!! You Rock!!

  • Stunning location right on the river. House is sparkling clean and stocked with everything you could possibly imagine you might need. Kevin and Kathy answered all our inquires instantly by text messaging. We highly recommend this AirBNB. It really is outstanding in all ways.

    Margaree Harbour, NS, Canada

A rustic, yet fully equipped, cozy hilltop fishing cabin overlooking the Margaree River. Margaree Forks is a great place to get away from it all and yet still be close to everything that western Cape Breton has to offer. Visitors who only want to be close to the Highlands Park might consider staying in Cheticamp.
The Shackteau is my dream retirement fishing cabin. It is not a cookie cutter AirBnb designed by outsiders. Please consider it a work in progress. I stay there comfortably but there is always work to be completed. The driveway, veranda roof and deck have all been upgraded. Two sets of stairs have been newly constructed. There is a slight slant to the cabin floor that I have repaired as much as possible. You can see the road just down the hill, yet you are sufficiently removed from it. There are no neighbours in sight and you will have total privacy. Note: The rental is for two people, and possibly a dog. The convertible couch is intended for the occasions when the two guests sleep separately.
This is a rural setting. My neighbour is a farmer. There are two seasonal cabins down the lane, but out of sight. The view of the river and the hills has an almost magical effect on your mood and well being. It is stunning. There is a Co-op grocery/liquor store a short drive away, and a Library/Visitor Centre with free wi-fi at the Forks. No matter where you stay in Cape Breton everything a visitor would like to do will require driving. I believe Margaree Forks is the best location for a visitor who wants to do it all.
  • The Shackteau was a great adventure. John was phenomenal. He met me at check in and we hit it off immediately. John and I rode around town as he showed me the local area shops and more importantly the fishing holes on the Margaree. The Shackteau was extremely clean and had all the necessary amenities and then some. The peaceful location and amazing view made it as comfortable as home. Can’t say enough about this experience. I will book again soon. John is a outstanding host and a wonderful source of local knowledge. Would recommend this stay to any and all who enjoy the outdoors and adventure, and a good conversation. Thanks again John. Be seeing you again soon.

    Joshua2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • The Shackteau was exactly as described and was a great place to stay! It is super peaceful and remote (amazing to look at the stars) but still close to local towns and the National Park. John has included some thoughtful touches in the cabin and it makes it very cozy. John was an excellent host with fast responses and wonderful suggestions. He even included some local goodies for our stay. My sister and I arrived during a storm (causing a power outage and some delays in our travel), yet John was patiently at the cabin waiting our arrival and did his best to help us get adjusted. We really appreciated how kind of a host John was. Would definitely rent again!

    Roisin2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • All expectations were exceeded. John truly goes above and beyond for his guests. The view alone is worth it.

    Kathy2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • John's place is just as advertised and I loved having a getaway in the woods on Cape Breton Island. It was my first time there, and my partner and I really appreciated John's local tips.

    Alexandra2019-10-14T00:00:00Z
  • The Shackteau is a very clean, comfortable, simple and well appointed space for a restful visit to Cape Breton. Everything that we needed in the kitchen was there. John’s explanations about how things worked were very clear. He also has a good number of brochures and books about things to do in the area and we were glad we followed some of his suggestions. :)

    Sylvie2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • Great

    Ben2019-10-09T00:00:00Z
  • The shackteau is a fun and cozy spot to rest after your Margaree/Cabot Trail adventures. With its beautiful views and charming crooked floors, it’s a good little base to make a snack after some touring around. Love the open concept and eclectic decor. John is a great host. Quick with responses and lots of helpful tips and suggestions about the area.

    Jessy2019-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • The Shackteau is the must stay location in the Margaree Valley. The cabin is located on top of a hill with an incredible view. At night you can hear the Margaree flowing below. If you are a fisherman it’s an easy stroll to several pools, and some of my favorites are a 5 minute drive in either direction. The actual cabin has everything you would ever need. It’s cozy and the porch hangouts are unreal. We cooked every night we were there and had more than enough kitchen supplies and gadgets to prepare our meals. Our advice is to grab some local seafood/fish from and veggies from Millers Farm road and enjoy a wonderful home cooked meal in the Shackteau. John is a great host with deep knowledge of the area that he is more than willing to share. It was easy to chat with him for several minutes. We cannot wait to stay here again!

Adventure awaits at this eco-camping hostel offering a natural setting, overlooking a picturesque valley. This location offers close to off-grid camping with a hostel-like atmosphere. You're just minutes away from some of Cape Breton's best beaches and the best local swimming holes on the Margaree River. We have 8 campsites available, some with tent platforms and some without. Please let us know which you prefer!
The campsites are located on a 100-year-old family farm which is a part of a new camping eco-hostel operated by Live Life In Tents. There are 8 campsites in total, a common use shelter for cooking or hanging out. Each tent is set in an open grassy area with a private view of the Highlands. Freshwater is available at this campground along with complimentary morning coffee to take with you on your journey. Common use washroom facilities on site. Wifi at the camp store with common use workspace, wifi, and a small shop to pick up anything you've overlooked before your trip. The bathrooms are duel pit privies and showers are outdoor solar showers. Towels provided for the shower. Please note that this is only a campsite rental and not inclusive of the tent itself. If you do not have the camping gear, we can provide a tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and pillows for a small fee. You will not get a campsite with all of these extras anywhere else on the island.
Margaree is world re-known for its salmon fishing but we've also got some of the most amazing beaches on Cape Breton Island. All are within a 10-20km drive from our site. We also have some amazing local swimming holes along the river as well. On Wednesday's and Friday's, there are local ceilidh's aka square dances and the local grocery store / NSLC is within 1/2 km away.
  • Great conveniently located spot to camp and use for a base to explore the Cabot Trail. The campsites were well maintained with everything you need on site.

  • Campsite is at a very nice location, good to explore the Cape Breton Island. David was very accomodating and the rented gear was very good quality.

  • David is a nice and friendly host. The coffee in the morning was great!

    Golafsoun2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • This is the best place you can stay for the value, it’s more of an eco hostel than a camp ground. We stayed here and did the Cabot trail aswell as many other things close by like Inverness beach. I’d definitely stay here again.

    Zackary2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • If you love to camp out this is the spot, it’s a beautiful open field in a quiet spot! There’s free coffee in the morning which I’m a fan of being a caffeine addict and what not! Also Lee was a fantastic host! He told us of so many places we could check out and adventures around cape Breton, Margaree, and other spots! Would absolutely stay again!

    Billy2019-08-17T00:00:00Z

Located half way between historic Cheticamp and beautiful Margaree, you can find our house on electronic Maps, GPS or other navigation technology. If you are travelling north on the Cabot Trail, we are about 10 minutes north of the Margaree Harbour Bridge. If you are travelling south from Cheticamp, the house is the second driveway on the left after you pass the Cap Le Moine sign.
This funky old house, located midway between the historic fishing village of Cheticamp and scenic Margaree Valley, is perfect for the entire tourist season.  In May/June wake up to a panoramic view of the lobster boats catching your supper.  In July/August enjoy a five-ten minute trip to several beaches.  And in September/October, marvel at the changing colors and take in the Celtic Colors International Festival.  3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, all linens, fully equipped kitchen, laundry room, sun room, wood stove (with wood in the shed), bar-b-q, TV/DVD player, cell service (no satellite or internet).  Five minutes to the nearest grocery store, fifteen minutes to golf, whale watching, museums, antiques & crafts, drug store, liquor store, banks, etc.  With a direct link to the Cape Breton Highland trails system, this is a natural  location for hikers, mountain bikers and ATV enthusiasts.Check in any time after 3PM.  Check out before 11AM. Check 12094 Cabot Traio out on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) Maps, Street View to see more. (EMAIL HIDDEN) The house is yours! Just bring your toothbrush and food ... the rest is waiting for you. Be ready to build awesome bonfires in the front lawn so you can watch the sun set over the water! Dynamic view. Sometimes you get to see whales! We leave our business care in the house. We are just minutes away and are available to support your stay. In this package: Privacy, panoramic view, picturesque area of the province! 10 minutes north of the Margaree Harbour bridge, 10 minutes away from Our house is on a well. This means that multiple showers and loads of laundry ought to be spread out over the day to provide the well time to recover.
In this package: Privacy, panoramic view, picturesque area of the province! When creating a guide for visitors of our Air BnB vacation rentals, I came up with my own list of absolute favorite places to go, things to do, and food to eat. Then I compared my list to some others. We’d love to hear from you about your favorites. Beaches’ there a plenty, but my favorite are below. There are many more, let me know which ones you like. • Chimney Corner Beach … a little challenging to find, but a favourite of the locals. It is quite private but my favorite part is the singing sands. There are very few beaches in Atlantic Canada who can boast this feature! • Ingonish Beach – excellent surf … a ton of fun! Because it is in the National Park, there are showers, change rooms, a canteen and lots of parking. • Inverness Beach, loved for its sheer size! It is excellent for strolling and hunting for sea glass … it also has a better boardwalk than any in the area. • Cap Rouge Beach – just inside the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, north of Cheticamp, is a great beach for jumping rock to rock on warm summer evenings. You will be tempted to build an Inukshuk! • Not a beach, but a very cool swimming spot (at least it was when it was lesser known) is the old gypsum quarry on the back road in Cheticamp. You may have to work a bit to find it, but totally worth the treasure hunt! There are several golf courses on the Island, but I’ll highlight the ones north and south of us: • Newly added to lists of the World’s Best Courses and currently getting the most media attention are Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs located in and near the town of Inverness. Their impressive design has garnered much media attention. • Although the above mentioned are considered the most “high-end”, my favorite continues to be the Highlands Links for it’s sheer beauty (especially in the fall), and its link to the historic Keltic Lodge. In my opinion, this resort rivals Lake Louise in its magnificence! Ecotourism: Beyond the traditional Bird/Whale Tours, Celtic Music, Salmon Fishing, and Museums that are well advertised, I thought I’d add links to some new and interesting endeavors that provide great opportunities for ecotourism / lifestyle. (Let me know if you want information on the traditional offerings! I’d be pleased to provide it.) • Live Life Intents – Tube down the Margaree River, Camping Equipment Rentals • CB West Paddle Boarding – Margaree/Cheticamp area/Tours • North River Kayak Tours- rentals and tours • Highland Bow and Arrow- learn the medieval sport, lots of fun, humbling! • Velo Max Cycling – rentals, repairs, parts • Ol Miller Trout Farm – U-fish and BnB • Gampo Abby is a Western Buddhist monastery in the Shambhala tradition located in Red River, Pleasant Bay. Check their web pages for times when visitors are welcomed to tour the gardens and facility, learn about the monastery, visit the Stupa of Enlightenment, or perhaps even to attend a meditation class • There are amazing trails and waterfalls in the area. Keep an eye out for signs along the Cabot Trail. Some suggestions: The Sky Line Trail is beautiful but very busy … go early. Egypt Falls in Upper Margaree and Uisge Ban Falls, behind Baddeck are not to be missed. Markets: • Mabou Farmers Market on Sunday mornings is my favourite, although there are others across the Island. Located in the Mabou Arena, it is well attended and there is a great variety of vendors. Artisans: Again, there are too many to count ranging from world famous to folk artists. Here are some of my favorites: • King Ross Quilts and Fiber Art (Big Intervale, Margaree Valley) • Cape Breton Clay (Margaree Valley) Bell Fraser’s unique pottery • Sunset Art Gallery (Cheticamp) – a quirky artist with a great sense of humor! • Leather Works • Doug Fraser (Inverness) visual artist • Arts North near Dingwall on the Cabot Trail displays a wide variety of the Island’s artisans. Favorite Coffee/Lunch Spots featuring fair trade coffee and drop dead amazing lunches/baking. • The Dancing Goat (North East Margaree) – very busy due to excellent reputation! • The Frog Pong (Cheticamp) – very cool to be part of the Sunset Folk Art Gallery! Best French pastry chef on the Island! • The Herring Choker (Nyanza – near Baddeck) Awesome Dining Experiences: • Glenora Distillery (Between Mabou & Inverness) – My favorite!!! Private get-away, romantic atmosphere, beautiful gardens, white linen, wonderful dining experience with a superb menu. This is where my husband and I go if we want a really great evening away from the kids, phones, business, and business of our lives. • Big Intervale Fishing Lodge (Big Intervale, Margaree Valley) – the journey to and from is an adventure unto itself. Make a reservation before you go to be sure you have an amazing experience. The location is as special as the food and the hospitality is second to none. Ask them to show you the photo albums of their early days in Big Intervale. • Nosh At My Table (Margaree Valley) – a private dining experience for parties of 8-12, that you have to book way in advance (but TOTALLY worth it). Amazing host/hostess, ambience, conversation and company. • Island Sunset (Belle Cote / Margaree Harbour) – Try the prime rib! Amazing sunset over the Margaree Harbour beach. • Red Shoe Pub (Mabou) – Excels in live music and ambience. Food and service can be variable, but because it is owned by the “Rankin Sisters” most people love to check it out. Check their website and go early when there is live entertainment. Drink: • Big Spruce Brewing- Widely expanding offerings of organic brew in Nyanza. • Glenora Distillery – Stunning grounds, fascinating tour of the facility, romantic dinners, amazing food & lodging, great entertainment, and fantastic wisky!!! - Route 19 - a new brewery in Inverness that is gaining fans and traction across the province. Click on the links below to see what others think: Charles Gains, who has a fishing place in Margaree Forks, describes Nova Scotia as “the last best place” in SaltsScapes Magazine and discusses the magnificence of the place. In an interview with Local Connections, Halifax Curated: Food and Drink Magazine, Academy Award-winning actor Alan Arkin shares his perspective on the natural beauty and culinary musts in the area of his chosen home in Terre Noire, between Margaree and Cheticamp. He mentions two of my absolute favourite lunch spots: the Dancing Goat in North East Margaree (often so busy that it is a great idea to call your order in before you get there) and the Herring Choker in Nianza (near Baddeck). In another Cape Breton Post article with the famed actor mentions The Frog Pond Café and Myles from Nowhere (Antiques in Margaree Forks) and La Bella Mona Lisa art gallery in St. Joseph du Moine (featuring the fun & quirky work of J Williatte-Battette)… Mr. Arkin has great taste! Very cool choices!
  • Great place to stay. Perfect for hunters or anyone wishing to enjoy the local sites.

  • Great communication with Elisabeth. Michael was very friendly as he came to see if everything was OK twice. Incredible spot, incredible view. Great place to relax, make a campfire and look at the stars...Close to the (insane) Highlands National Parc and Cheticamp. We'll be back!!

    Olivier2019-08-26T00:00:00Z
  • We were positively surprized, as we were a bit afraid of an old house, with low ceilings etc. Especially I liked the rain while sleeping in the "outside" room and waking up with great seaview. Inside it was very clean. The firepit was great. Thanks for the nice communication with Elizabeth. She really cared for her guests. We felt home.

    Edgar2019-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • Elizabeth & Michael are exceptional hosts! From receiving a very descriptive letter from the moment we booked it to actually meeting Michael when we were leaving. I was in contact with Elizabeth many times leading up to our stay. She is very responsive and helpful. We loved meeting Michael...such a pleasure to speak to. Sorry we couldn’t meet you as well. The cottage is great. We loved the rustic charm...a true old cottage. All of the beds were super comfortable (esp after having camped and slept on an air mattress for 2 nights! LOL). Everything was clean and tidy. We also appreciated having the little things in the cottage also...like toilet paper and napkins! The location is perfect! We were there for 2 nights and essentially 1 day. We were able to drive the whole entire Cabot Trail! Had lunch in Chéticamp and dinner in Ingonish. Both had live music and, of course...seafood! And Inverness Beach is a definite must...we went our first night and it was neat; must be spectacular during the day. We loved the views at the cottage...our only regret is not staying longer. Thank you again Elizabeth & Michael, we will be back. I will be sending my sister (& others) your way, she would just love your place! Claudia, Patrick, William & Emma

    Claudia2019-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • What a great, old and charming house! With lots of characteristics. The best part of the house is the ‘sunroom’ from where you see the most amazing sunsets. The house is close to Cheticamp and the entrance of the National Park. Grocery store is a 5 min. drive. A perfect place to stay at the Cabot trail!

    Eva2019-07-29T00:00:00Z
  • Elizabeth place was very nice. It had an amazing view and a truely authentic feel. We had all that we needed, milk for our coffee, laundry detergent, and kindling wood and fire wood for our fire in the evening. The location was very close to Cape Breton Highlands national park. To add to the experince, we had technology withdrawal (especially our 12 year old) as there was no wifi. As we were leaving we dicovered that the place was built in late 1800 and many of the house elements were in their orgininal condition. Overall, an amazing and spacious experince. Would definately come back.

Meet Cabin 3-the Vintage Cabin! Featuring our favourite original elements (clawfoot tub, bedframes, etc), we've created a cozy, functional space with the modern amenities you expect. Walk to the corner store, playground, and famous Margaree River. Stroll around Grandpa's racetrack, or take in your morning coffee with the sunrise from the deck! Minutes from the Cabot Trail, make this a home base for all your Island adventures. Or, stay put and enjoy the lush, peaceful, and tranquil surroundings.
This cottage was built by my grandfather in 1945. Originally, there were 6 cabins on the property, and only Cabin 3 remains! While it has been well enjoyed by fishers, hunters, then family (and friends) since, it is perfectly imperfect. No cellular service is a real thing.... the bedroom doors don't always close properly, there is definitely chipped paint to be found, and the floors are a little uneven. Despite these "shortcomings", we believe that comfy beds, cozy atmosphere, lush surroundings, and the tranquility you'll experience here will help you forget all about these things...except maybe the cell service. Whip up an amazing from-scratch meal in the (small, but) well-equipped kitchen, or throw some hot dogs on the charcoal grill! Hit Fletcher's (the corner store) for an ice cream cone, or make a reservation at the nearby Normaway Inn for a multi-course, fine local dining experience! As long as you feel completely at home, we are happy! (Oh yeah - there is a landline! And you can get cellular service if you stand just so in a particular spot on the driveway...details in the handbook!)
Margaree Centre is a rare spot in the Margarees with great walkability! A few steps up the road, you'll find the gas bar/general store, a community centre with fitness room, gymnasium and playground, the beautiful Margaree River for a great swim or fishing, and multi-use (walking, biking, skidoo, and ATV) trails. Drive for a few minutes, and you'll connect with the Cabot Trail at the Dancing Goat (a favourite coffee/lunch/treat spot for locals and visitors alike), right across from Two Macs, a fantastic shop featuring unique gift and handmade items created by artisans from all over the East Coast!
  • Awesome place to stay for the price! When I arrived there was homemade bread, homemade brownies, milk, eggs and bacon in the fridge!

  • This quaint and cozy cabin is the perfect place to stay when you are experiencing Cape Breton. The host goes out of her way to make you feel at home. There were so many extra thoughtful touches that made our stay amazing. This cabin has so much character and is located in the most beautiful setting.

  • Cabin 3 was a dream! Honestly the best airB&B we have stayed in. Barbara was the most hospitable and welcoming, from the local recommendations, help with directions to all the personal touches that came with the place, such as fresh flowers and garden herbs and well stocked of any appliance you can think of. The homemade treats were divine (that kombucha! ❤️) So glad we booked two nights and really could have stayed more. It was one of those stays where the accommodations are so worth spending more time in than just sleeping and we were fortunate to have that with the many home cooked meals and board games that my fiancé Sam and I had the time to enjoy. We sincerely hope we can come back soon. Thank you for welcoming us to your Cabin, Barbara and family!

    Caitlin2019-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful peaceful cabin and Barbara is an incredible host! Can't wait to return to the cabin.

  • We had a great, cozy autumn getaway at Cabin #3. The cabin itself is adorable with lots of interesting antiques. Barbara left us fresh bread, herbs, and flowers + other treats (yay locally roasted coffee!), as well as some excellent recommendations for things to do in the area. The cabin is perfect for a small group/ family. We definitely hope to visit again soon!

  • This was my first time visiting the east coast. I was blown away by the Atlantic’s majesty and just how many stars you could see at night. The landscape was so beautiful and nestled right in the middle of a small seaside community is this darling Airbnb. It was very easy to find. Regina was kind enough to greet us upon arrival before we easily entered the unit. The space is very clean and bright. There are lots of windows to flood the space with natural light and curtains aplenty for privacy. It is very cosy and modern while still maintaining the rustic charm of the seaside barn. I appreciated all the thoughtful touches including the nice robes and slippers to bundle up in. It was a perfect experience, our stay with Regina really pulled it altogether. I couldn’t be happier.

    Julia2019-08-25T00:00:00Z
  • Regina is a superb host - she met us when we arrived (an hour late), offered us freshly baked dessert, loaned us her (better) mosquito repellant, and gave us plenty of local tips. We slept great on her super-comfy bed and walked 5 minutes from her home to a spectacular, deserted rocky beach. We stayed long enough to see a sea lion bobbing around in the waves. It was a charmed stay, made possible by a charming host. Thank you, Regina!

This is a rustic 3 bedroom old house, approx. 120 years old, on a 2 acre lot with an orchard of cherry and pear trees. The bathroom only has a bathtub, however, guests are welcomed to use the shower on the first floor. Lots of room to run and play! 2 rooms have double beds, 1 room single bed.
There is absolutely no noise. You might hear the wind through the trees, but nothing else! Up a hill, so you would need a car to get around town!
there are Cherry, Pear, Plum and Apple trees on our land! which ever fruit is ready during your visit, we will share!
  • Great hospitality from Dianne and Blair. They were great hosts, and very helpful with suggestions. The house was in a great location for the Cabot Trail and we would highly recommend. Thank you again...we would stay again

  • What an amazing couple! Our stay there was great, they offered us breakfast, local tips on trails and gift shops, it was perfect! Would stay there again for sure!

  • You think you get an Airbnb and then you met Dianne and Blaire. This couple made us feeling more than welcome in their home for our three days stay. We got a lot of tips for our hiking-tours, Dianne showed us her town on a private tour and we had lots of interesting and funny conversations with them. We would definitely come back!

  • Dianne and Blair were lovely hosts. They provided us with good recommendations for both food and travel routes. We ended up changing the time we would arrive and they were so easy-going and accommodating and even provided breakfast and conversation in the morning. Would stay again.

Location is all or so it's said. Blessed with a stretch of sand two miles long, an ocean that can reach 73 degrees Fahrenheit and spectacular sunsets that dip into the gulf each evening, this stunning geography is, in large part, the reason a majority of our guests return again and again. It's not the only reason but once you've experienced a stress free day at the beach, you will be enticed to return for another dip in the warm coastal waters or the fresh water stream that runs into them.
