“Tsubara”-calm traditional Kyoto Machiya house

YuanzhenRating, 5 stars1 week ago
We stayed at Koji and Eri’s home for one night to experience traditional Japanese Machiya culture, and it was truly unforgettable. The house is over 100 years old but beautifully preserved—spotlessly clean, thoughtfully arranged, functional, and full of charm. Koji and Eri were incredibly warm and welcoming. Eri gave us a detailed room tour along with fascinating insights into Japanese history and tradition. If you’re looking for an authentic cultural experience, this place is a must-stay!

Guesthouse Hana - Bamboo Villa

AudreyRating, 5 stars4 days ago
Bon emplacement.

KyotoTraditional RiversideHouse; Truer Experience

ChristopherRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Ume's place was a fantastic place for our time in Kyoto. It's far enough away to be quiet yet close enough to grab a quick train (3 minute walk, 2 minute ride) to the nearest station for things like Gion and Nishiki. it's only about a ten minute walk from Kyoto station as well. Ume was a great host, giving recommendations, checking in with us a couple of times throughout our trip, etc. Do note the stairs are a tad narrow (not uncommon for Japan) so if you've got mobility concerns keep that in mind though there is a bedroom on the lower floor as well to help with that. would definitely stay here again.

Amazinghouse, quiet house for long holidays is BEST

DavidRating, 5 stars1 month ago
The location is fantastic — just a stone’s throw from the metro, and only 10 minutes to the city center. We really liked the area because it feels local and authentic, not touristy at all. The house is spacious, comfortable, well-equipped, and full of natural light. Niko is lovely and very thoughtful, which made our stay even better. If I had to mention something, a few things felt a bit worn, and the place wasn’t completely spotless, which we expected. But honestly, it didn’t affect our stay. I still totally recommend it and would definitely come back!

Mulan family

NicoRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Mulan’s accommodation was perfect — we were happy to sleep on the tatami mats with our children. The place is very clean and welcoming. It was cold in the morning when we woke up, but we were warm and cozy under the thick comforters during the night. The bathroom is quite basic but very practical. The water is nice and hot, with great pressure. Communication with the host was very easy. They kindly drove us to the Golden Pavilion and then to the Silver Pavilion. They were very accommodating and helpful. They also dropped us off at the station so we could catch our train from Kyoto Station. The location is about 20 minutes by subway from Kyoto, and we enjoyed staying in such a peaceful residential neighborhood. There’s a FamilyMart on the street and a little place where we had some delicious pastries!

Artist's house in Kyoto with a big cypress bath

MadeleineRating, 5 stars6 days ago
We had a great stay at Jinn’s place. It was our first time in Kyoto and we thought this was a perfect way to embrace the traditional side of Japan but with modern luxuries. Jinn is an artist and you can see that in the design of this place. It’s beautiful. And the gardens surrounding the property are lovely too and make it feel very peaceful, which was exactly what I needed after the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Jinn’s place does require walking to and from the bus station but it only takes about 8 minutes and the hill is only the last 2 minutes so it wasn’t unbearable plus it was a nice way to work off all the ramen and gyoza we’d been eating. It’s also close to grocery stores and restaurants. The house was clean and had everything we needed. Jinn was a great host, allowed us to check-in earlier and provided clear check-in instructions and took the time to say farewell after check-out but otherwise gave us heaps of privacy. We would stay here again when we revisit Kyoto.

Haruya Guesthouse

ClaraRating, 5 starstoday
Staying at this guesthouse was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. The house itself is beautifully organized, cozy, and incredibly comfortable. It has all of the amenities you could possibly need, and the art and trinkets all around give everything a great feel. The hiking trails nearby are amazing, and to make it even better, their sweet dog Lily showed us the way like a true experienced guide! We also had so much fun playing with their pigeon Rubina and duck Tori. But what made this place truly special was the family hosting us. Their kindness, generosity, and curiosity created such a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere. One evening, they even brought us some Japanese desserts to try, things we never had before! We had wonderful conversations and felt so lucky to be part of their world, even for a short time. We were genuinely sad to leave, but we hope to come back again in the future. This stay was worth every moment, and we’ll treasure the memories forever!

青春画廊 東山 : Contemporary Art House Higashiyama

BruceRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
Yasuhiko san was waiting for us when we arrived and explained everything about the place in careful detail, and provided what turned out to be great recommendations for a bakery and a grocery store, both nearby. The staircase, as he warned us ahead of time, is quite steep -- my older friends preferred to stay downstairs; I used the upstairs bedroom and found it easier to use the staircase by walking down backwards like a ladder -- it is quite steep. The area is very busy with tourists, many foreign, and both the bakery and the grocery had more non-Japanese than Japanese when we visited -- I suppose this is to be expected so close to Gion. But in short, the place was wonderful, as was Yasuhiko.

Spacious 2-bedroom house with free bicycles

GenevieveRating, 5 stars2 weeks ago
Sanae's home was perfect for our family of 4 - very close to the metro and to Kyoto Station for the bullet train. Easy walking and pleasant and very pretty neighborhood. I don;t know if it was mentioned but this home has two stories and the stairs are very steep! Some folks may have trouble navigating those stairs, but it was fine for us. The two bedrooms were spacious and comfortable and Sanae was really helpful with advice when we needed it. All around, this was a great place to stay and we enjoyed our time there.

1min to Yasaka Pagoda/MAX 5/Comfortable House

MoiraRating, 5 stars3 weeks ago
Resi Stay Yasaka An is and excellent two bedroom place. It is small but very efficient and very very quiet, especially considering the closeness to so many highly trafficked tourist areas. The place is romantic and exquisitely designed. Perfect to have 2 bedrooms for ourselves, and our 14 year old granddaughter. The bathroom facilities were beautiful, washing machine à plus, too,

3min walk from Keihan Sumizome Stn. Open-air bath

BonaRating, 5 stars1 week ago
Went with my mom and aunt. They ABSOLUTELY loved the open air bath. Place was clean, two toilet and separate bath/shower came handy for 4 people (though I guess this is because of us being all ladies). 2nd floor has two rooms but one is supposed to be living room so you have to go through one room to get to the next. Again there was no problem because we were all ladies and family. This is very typical Japanese house so it's perfectly normal I'd say. Again, it is very typical Japanese house which means thin walls and there is a very sensitive old lady next door. She won't confront you or anything, but you can get some Kyoto style sarcasm (We were asked how much we pay per night! Haha, we should have joked that we were staying for free). But do keep in mind, for the sake of the poor lady, your voice can be heard more loudly than you think, and keep it low during night time. It is a residential area, you'll rarely find fellow tourists in the neighborhood.

Riverside/ 2mins to Inari Shrine/ 5mins Kyoto Sta.

RushiRating, 5 stars1 week ago
We had a great stay at this home. Our group of 6 comfortable stayed amongst the 3 upstairs bedrooms. Like most Japanese homes, the toilets and shower rooms are separate. This home had 2 toilets and 2 showers. The washing machine works great, and the drying functionality (hanging clothes in the bathroom by a drying vent) worked as well. We loved the location, walking distance from the Fushimi Inari shrine and across the street from a 7/11 and walking distance from 3 different train stations. Very easy to get around the area! Thanks for an awesome stay

We had a great time at Taiyo’s apartment. The location is exceptional for the price. We were able to visit many tourist attractions by foot. Taiyo and his mother are lovely hosts. Thank you for being so flexible on our date change and arrival time, we greatly appreciated it.
