Your guide to Wasagaming
All About Wasagaming
Located about three and a half hours northwest of Winnipeg, on the shores of Clear Lake, Wasagaming is the main base for exploring the boreal forests, wildflower meadows, and prairie grasslands of Riding Mountain National Park. The park is the largest in Manitoba, home to a large variety of wildlife and birdlife. People come here to see the majestic bison gallop across the prairies, spot elk and moose, and even hear wolves howling in the distance.
Aside from its natural wonders, the village of Wasagaming offers a whole host of recreational activities and entertainment options such as an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, lawn bowling, and lots of canoeing, kayaking, and water-skiing on Clear Lake. Wasagaming also features two 1930s log buildings that are designated as provincial heritage sites. The best place to get your bearings is at the Riding Mountain Visitor Centre, where you can get expert guidance on all the attractions and activities in the area.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Wasagaming
Summer in Wasagaming is all about long warm days and mild nights for enjoying the many outdoor activities in Riding Mountain National Park. While it can get hot, the nights by the lake will provide a cool breeze, so it’s not a bad idea to pack a sweater with your sunscreen. The annual Clear Lake Chamber Music takes place in the park during July and August, featuring classical and jazz music from local and nationally renowned artists.
Spring sees mostly sunny days, but there is the occasion for rain, and in fall, the temperatures tend to drop a little, so make sure you bring some extra layers. If you’re arriving in winter, you can expect cold and snowy conditions that require waterproof boots, a jacket, gloves, and a warm hat. Whenever you decide to visit Wasagaming, you’ll find a great range of Clear Lake cabin rentals available.
Top things to do in Wasagaming
Riding Mountain hiking trails
Hiking is popular in Riding Mountain National Park, with more than 400 kilometres of trails for all experience levels. The Burls and Bittersweet trail is a gentle 2.2-kilometer loop that meanders through the scenic forest along the east side of the escarpment. The 1.9-kilometer Ominnik Marsh Trail takes you through Manitoba’s marshlands along a boardwalk, with places to sit and enjoy the natural scenery, and wildlife to spot, including birds, fish, and maybe even a moose. The more challenging 9.5-kilometer Bald Hill hiking trail passes through more rugged terrain, taking in some of the most expansive views of the park.
The Red Chairs
Spend some time searching for the famous Riding Mountain National Park Red Chairs. In 2015, eight sets of red Adirondack chairs were placed at scenic locations throughout the park, for visitors to sit down on to take in the beautiful surroundings and lakeside views. Some chairs are easy to spot, while others will take some finding. Each location shares a great story about the park’s landscape and history.
Clear Lake Beach
Spend a lazy day enjoying the sun at Clear Lake Beach, Wasagaming’s most popular beach. With its white sandy shores and clear, calm waters, it provides a safe environment for swimmers of all abilities. The reliable conditions are also ideal for many water sports, including water skiing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. A range of boats and equipment are available to rent at the marina, where you can also book a sunset cruise on the lake.
