Townhouse in Alfriston
Snug Victorian Cottage in Heart of Alfriston Village
There’s a main bedroom with a bespoke 4-poster bed, plus a pretty second bedroom. The cottage is brimming with character, art, & beautiful objects. Pick a good book and sit outside in the sunny garden, or in the winter by the log burner.
Nestled within the South Downs National Park enjoying some of the best walking in the country, explore the medieval village with its quirky shops, all within a couple of hours of London. Cycle or walk there're cliffs, forest, vineyards, Downs or strolls along the riverside. Pubs & eateries galore, plus a wealth of cultural places to visit. Adventure awaits!
This bright and airy house is ideal for a relaxing break. The area has everything you need for a great walking or cycling holiday or just mooching about. You can just stroll around and enjoy all the lovely pubs and tea houses in the village. Alfriston has one of the best independent bookshops in the country - Much Ado Books. Badgers Tea House is just across the road - a wonderful place to relax (a 10% discount is offered to my guests). Well behaved dogs are welcome (not on the furniture or upstairs please) and they're welcomed in most places around the village.
In the winter there is a log burner (initial basket of logs supplied). My house has many times been described as light and "cosy", and is filled with art and interesting things - this is where I live in between bookings so is very much a HOME and not a holiday let.
Limitless walks and cycling paths to enjoy whether you're a serious walker and cyclist or just want to wander in the glorious South Downs National Park. One can walk down to the Cuckmere River without crossing a road and then onwards via the South Downs Way. There is also the Wealden Way and Vanguard Way nearby.
There is a pretty garden at the back of the house, which in the summer is lovely for eating outside - breakfast is my favourite time as it is east facing. Ideal for those with a dog as it is surrounded by a flint wall.
I have a key lock box for easy access and somewhere to put the key when you go out so you can relax knowing no-one will be locked out.
Access is on foot to the back of the house, where the key box is located. No vehicular access is allowed to the back. It is however, possible to pull up at front of the house and unload into the front garden and bring things in through the front door before going to park. Do be aware that this is a narrow road so please be considerate of other cars ability to pass.
We are a "dark sky" area so there's no street lighting in the village. There are security lights at the back of the house, but I would strongly advise guests to bring a torch or ensure they have a torch app on their phones.
I am very happy to advise guests beforehand as to where and what to visit. When not at my house, I live close by and am at the end of a phone.
Set in a beautiful medieval village in the heart of the South Downs National Park.
On the South Downs Way offering rolling hills, Friston Forest, Cuckmere Haven, & the world-famous Seven Sisters cliffs. With a wealth of different terrains, you can enjoy every type of walk or cycle. Paddle boarding is popular too. Walk to one of the many pubs or the local vineyard. Or, just mooch around the village shops & tearooms.
Cultural life abounds too with Charleston, Glyndebourne & Brighton nearby.
Public Transport: Polegate train station (with main line trains from London Victoria/Ashford International and Brighton) is 5 miles away - the station has a 24/7 taxi rank just outside. Seaford train station (Brighton Line) is 4 miles away also with a taxi rank. Berwick train station (main line to London Victoria) is 2 miles away (no taxis, but sometimes I can collect guests).
Once in the village there is the Cuckmere Community Ramblers bus and limited local services.
There are so many local places to visit if you have a cultural bent. The Clergy House - the first National Trust property is in the village, close by is Charleston Farmhouse - Home of the Bloomsbury set and Farley Farm House - Home of the Surrealists. The world famous Glyndebourne is a 15 minute drive for both the summer Festival and the autumn touring season. The historic town of Lewes is 20 miles away with its beautiful castle, Anne of Cleves house and many beautiful buildings. Michelham Priory is a few miles away and then there is the incredible coast line to explore as well as the Downs themselves. We have the Rathfinny Wine Estate in the village with tasting room tours on offer. You could spend weeks here and still not touch the surface. I'm happy to send further information if you want, much of it is in the house information book. Please ask.
This house has a steep wooden staircase so is not ideal for for those who might have difficulty with such stairs.
