Waterfront Family Getaway on Mayne Island

PaulRating, 5 stars6 months ago
We had a wonderful stay! Had everything we were looking for -- waterfront location and set up well for children. The location and windows looking out onto the bay, islands, Straight of Georgia and across to Mt. Baker were what we loved most. Saw a lot of wildlife. Steps down to the water were nice too. House was otherwise set up well and as described. Highly recommend this location.

The Sea House

I had a wonderful stay here over the weekend! Niki and her husband were incredibly generous and friendly. On my first night, they even brought me some snacks, which was such a thoughtful gesture. Their adorable dog, Guss, and sweet cat, Mikey, added joy to the experience—they’re both incredibly friendly . The location is perfect—extremely close to both the ferry and bus stop. The place was exactly as described, with beautiful views and a cozy atmosphere. I also appreciated the extra blankets provided. Overall, a very pleasant and comfortable stay!

Oceanfront low bank home viewing Mt. Baker.

What a fantastic place! From the view to the hot tub to the really great and well stocked space, we had an amazing stay here with everything that we needed. Even some toys for my toddler! This is a real gem and my only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. I could spend days sitting in the sun room or on the deck watching the wildlife and the view. We will definitely be back! Thanks Carol for a wonderful stay.

A perfect place to rest and restore before and after our outings in Vancouver - including attending The Eras Tour at BC place. The bus stop was close so we could connect to the Skytrain. The Airbnb is located in a really lovely residential neighborhood. Highly recommend

New Bright Modern Farm Oasis

This property was exceptionally beautiful and comfortable for me and my family. We loved waking up to the chickens in the backyard, as well as a family of deer on the horizon of the property. Great find, comfortable & spacious home and would 100% stay here again if visiting the islands.

Stylish Modern Country Retreat

David's place is as amazing as it looks. You'll never find a better equipped kitchen. Beds and furniture very comfortable. Just a beautiful piece of property and house. And David is also a very understanding host that realizes that during a long stay, little things are gonna come up or get slightly beat up (especially when you travel with kids and dogs) despite everyone's best efforts and intentions! We hope to return some day to a wonderful spot on this magical island!

We really enjoyed staying at Allison’s. Very quiet, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the lake. Watching the sunrising on the lake while sitting on the dock was spectacular. The kitchen had everything needed and many more extras. We definitely recommend.

Your guide to Salt Spring Island

All About Salt Spring Island

Located between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island, Salt Spring Island boasts freshwater lakes and secluded beaches perfect for kayaking and swimming. Beddis Beach is a white crushed-shell beach known for its fertile tide pools, while Vesuvius Beach has the warmest waters on the island and plenty of deer, ospreys, herons, and kingfishers to spot. Cusheon Lake and Stowell Lake both have small beaches and calm waters that are suitable for swimming. There are also parks full of natural beauty to explore, including Mount Maxwell Provincial Park, characterized by its stands of old-growth Douglas fir and Garry oak meadows.

There are several nice seaside villages to visit on Salt Spring Island. The largest is Ganges, where you’ll find many restaurants and pubs, independent shops, and a thriving arts community. To get a sense of the island’s arts scene take the self-guided studio tour, which includes 21 art studios, some offering workshops and demonstrations. Many artists also showcase their work at the popular Saturday Market, which runs from April till October.

The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Salt Spring Island

Salt Spring Island has a wide range of vacation rentals, including houses and cabins. In spring, expect pleasant days and some rain, and in fall you can enjoy the changing colours of the landscape. Summer sees warm sunny days ideal for enjoying the island’s beaches and hiking trails. From April to October, look out for the weekly Saturday Market, where all products are made, baked, or grown by the vendors. In September, the Apple Festival is a fun event with live music, apple tastings, and even a workshop to create apple-inspired art. Winter is quieter on the island, but equally rewarding for those that love relaxing in a cabin with an open fire while watching the weather pass.

Top things to do in Salt Spring Island

Ruckle Provincial Park

Ruckle Provincial Park offers 15 kilometers of easy hiking trails that take you through forests and along the coast, offering fantastic views. The popular Yeo Point Hike is 4.5-kilometers and leads you along a coastal trail through hemlock and cedar forest before arriving at the beach at Yeo Point. You may see grouse on your journey, and sometimes you can spot orcas out at sea. Look up for majestic bald eagles flying overhead.

Ganges

Spend a few hours wandering around the island’s largest village, with its interesting shops, coffee houses, restaurants, and pubs. There are also dozens of art galleries to explore, mostly run by the local artists and makers. Down by the harbor, witness the impressive sight of sea planes flying in and out and see the fleet of yachts and boats. In the heart of the village, Centennial Park offers a relaxing stroll.

Kayaking

Jump in a kayak and explore as much of the island’s 130 kilometers of shoreline as you can. Paddling out in the water is one of the best ways to spot the local marine life that lives off Salt Spring Island, including seals. You can rent a kayak in Ganges and take a self-guided tour, or there are several organised tours such as a sunset paddle to the beautiful Chocolate Beach, one of the tiny islands scattered around Ganges Harbour.
