Your guide to Granby
All About Granby
Perched nearly 2,500 metres above sea level, Granby is a small town in Grand County, Colorado, almost completely enclosed by the Arapaho National Forest. Outdoor adventure beckons everywhere you turn in this region, and Granby acts as a base camp for exploring Rocky Mountain National Park. You can spend one day kayaking or paddle boarding on Lake Granby, then head into the national park for a scenic stroll.
Trails wind through mountain terrain and loop around lakes, such as the ultra-reflective Mirror Lake at the end of the Cascade Creek Trail. Being this high in the mountains means you’ll often have clear skies during the day and star-filled nights. Although much of the attractions in Granby revolve around the outdoors, downtown Granby along Agate Avenue is lined with independent restaurants and shops selling camp gear and handmade souvenirs. Visit the Moffat Road Railroad Museum to witness Colorado’s largest model Christmas train display.
The best time to stay in a vacation rental in Granby
Granby is a year-round destination, and each season offers a unique way to enjoy the natural surroundings. Summer is warm and sunny, making it a perfect time to hike in Rocky Mountain National Park or visit the region’s lakes, including Lake Granby. (Since you’re at such a high altitude, do remember to wear sun protection during the day, and possibly sunglasses.) Fall offers incredible views of deciduous trees, especially aspen, and the seasonal transformation from lush green to bright yellow creates a striking contrast against the blue-grey Rocky Mountains. September is still quite warm, and the skies are particularly clear at this time of year.
Granby has long, cold, and snowy winters. Therefore, the town becomes a popular ski destination each year. Winter recreation is at its finest here, from ice fishing on Granby Lake to snowmobiling and snowshoeing through the mountains.
Top things to do in Granby
Rocky Mountain National Park
A 20-minute drive northwest of town will get you to Rocky Mountain National Park via the Grand Lake entrance. This 1,075-square-kilometre park has beautiful mountain vistas to explore by foot, bike, or car. Advanced hikers can trek up the park’s 4,300-metre mountain, Longs Peak. However, a simple stroll around Bear Lake is an easy alternative. But you don’t have to hike up a mountain to get great views here. Simply drive up Trail Ridge Road, which takes you above the treeline up to an elevation of 3,650 metres.
Lake Granby
The picturesque Lake Granby, nestled between several mountains just outside town, is the third largest body of water in the state. Here, you’ll find 64 kilometres of scenic shoreline and plenty of swimmers and kayaks in the waters during the warmer months. Stocked with kokanee salmon and rainbow trout, this lake is popular with anglers.
Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre
Located in Grand Lake, just 20 minutes north of Granby, the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre is a live theatre company that has been bringing Broadway musicals to the region since the 1960s. Every summer, memorable hits are brought to life onstage in front of a live audience. Shows are rotated nightly and run for the entire summer season.
