Perched up on timbers, this cozy little A-frame offers a perfect blend of urban loft and rustic cabin living. Offering a bird’s eye view of the harbor from the deck and the loft bedroom, the Birdhouse is a charming home base for your Grand Marais adventure. The cabin is nestled in an alley just a few steps from downtown restaurants, shops, harbor, breweries, coffee shop, North House Folk School, Art Colony and much more.
The centerpiece of the Birdhouse is the contemporary burgundy tub, perfect for sipping your morning coffee. Note that there is no shower. The wall of south facing windows lets the natural light pour in, perfect on a cold winter day! In the summer, the south facing deck is there for you to enjoy your happy hour drinks before you hit the night scene. The interior finish features a Nepali theme with porter baskets, yak wool blanket and large singing bowl. The warmth of an all wood finish is created by the birch floors, wood paneled walls and large loft timbers. The abstract shaped windows bring a nice modern balance. The kitchen is fully stocked. Mökki offers a bar fridge, propane stove top, kettle, drip cone coffee maker, pots, pans, dishes and spices. Note that there is crock pot in lieu of an oven. The sound of the harbor seagulls are sure to make you feel like you are on an ocean front stay.

  • Excellent location for Grand Marais, with a view of the water and tons of charm. This is a unique space, perfect to match our activities at the North House folk school. Prepare for a bath, not a shower as you're encouraged to live life at a different pace. A wonderful way to visit Grand Marais.

  • The best Airbnb I’ve ever stayed at! Wholeheartedly recommend

  • The Birdhouse was a fun, inspiring getaway spot for winter fun. Space heater is super sufficient, just plan ahead and dial the heat way back before you climb into bed! We loved the beers next door at Voyageur and the short walk to their beautiful food co-op....among all of the views and proximity to skiing!

The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from it's center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything. Ask us about our "Social Distancing Vacation" for longer stays. Discounts will apply. Very popular vacation rental with loyal, returning clientele. And now something new: a new Finnish sauna is available on site- see details. Professionally deep cleaned after each stay.
You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. Your own private parking leads to the stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV with satalite TV and blueray. The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. Many of our guests ache for a connection with nature (with high thread count sheets), reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. No one says this out loud, but we think that’s their intrinsic motivation. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment so that if you stand in the center you have a 360 degree view of the sky. Notice how it changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through it's moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. An antique ship's light occupies the cuppola and can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. Seagulls are your companions and you may hear their webby feet tapping on the roof in the morning. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The galley kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home and vacation rental and is next door to the 'Writer's Cabin' and 'The Boathouse' a recently constructed timberframe home that is the residence of the owners. You are always welcome to drop in to the Boathouse and see what project is under way. Currently the owner is building an Alaskan skiff, and preparing another boat for excursions to the Canadian North Shore. If you are traveling with a large group, consider including the neighboring Fisherman's and Writer's cabin rentals which share the property. There is capacity for a group of 12 or so if you rent all the cabins. You can get the whole family reunion or wedding group on one site! The Lighthouse is known for it's inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a handfull of marriage proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse. Update: a Finnish Sauna has been installed on the property. For a one time fee of $49 you can have access to the sauna, receive robes and additional towels, and instructions for use. It is right next door.
This is the heart of old Grand Marais. The Lighthouse is part of it's own micro neighborhood inside the Harborview neighborhood of Grand Marais. We are very near the water, North House Folk School, the Art Colony, Java Moose Coffee house, and all the restaurants and entertaimnent. Everything is in short walking distance. Once you've arrived you can leave your keys on the counter- you won't need your car.
  • Cute as button and the view is breathtaking.

  • Todd and Susan’s lighthouse is the perfect spot for a getaway. It’s within walking distance of downtown Grand Marais and offers great views of Lake Superior. We followed many of Todd and Susan’s recommendations and had a wonderful time snowshoeing on Pincushion Mountain, drinking beer at Voyageur Brewery and basking in the sauna. We can’t wait to come back!

Mökki is the perfect mix of cozy log cabin and hip downtown life. This charming abode is located along a quiet street - just a block away from main street. It is within a short walk of Grand Marais' restaurants, pubs, shops, sailboat harbor, folk school, art colony and more.
Mökki, a Finnish word for cottage, was hand crafted by the owner and is a masterful work of art. Enjoy some down time on the front porch or cozy up in the sleeping loft - this place has a lot of charm. Surrounding the cabin is a large yard with garden beds and plenty of tree cover. The cabin sleeps up to 3; there is 1 queen bed in the loft and 1 single pull-out on the main floor. Please note that the stairs to the bedroom are steep - it is not a ladder so rest assured that the steps can be descended normally, aka by facing forward. The kitchen is equipped with a two burner electric stove, a mini fridge, a microwave, pots, pans, silverware, dishes and glassware. For your coffee you can choose from a drip cone or a coffee maker. This snug cabin has all you'll need for your northern getaway.
A quaint, walkable area, the cabin is nestled just across from the local library and one street away from lake Superior and the old Gunflint Trail road.
  • Quaint tiny cottage in the perfect location!

  • This was the perfect place to stay for our weekend in Grand Marais. It's located extremely close to the fun things in town, but you still get the secluded cabin feeling. The cabin was stocked with great amenities - and they even had a basket with toiletries in case you forgot something. I would recommend this cabin to any couple who is looking for a great place to stay in Grand Marais!

    Gretchen2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • A delightful cabin just steps away from everything in Grand Marais. It was thoughtfully outfitted with everything you need, without feeling cluttered. Clean and bright and charming. Just a short drive from wonderful cross country skiing and hiking.

    Jane2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • This is a terrific, efficient and easy place to stay in Grand Marais. Very basic but more than adequate. We’ve stayed twice while taking classes at the Folk House School across the street and it was perfect both times!

  • Great location and a beautiful place.

    Cole2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Cute little cabin in easy walking distance of everything in Grand Marais!

    Elizabeth2020-01-24T00:00:00Z
  • This little Dovetail cabin was a perfect landing spot for our trip to Grand Marais. The location was great for us - just a block off the main highway through town, and right behind the local brewery, but still situated in a quiet residential neighborhood. We easily walked from the cabin all around downtown and the lakefront. The cabin is small, but offered everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Even during a cold January weekend (low temps below zero at night) it was cozy; we actually turned the heater down at night, since heat rising to the sleeping loft made it almost too warm up there. Stevie was prompt with messages and provided detailed info about arrival, parking, etc.

Hummingbird Nest has knotty pine walls with vaulted ceilings, Queen bed in bedroom, living room with table and chairs as well as Microwave, Refrigerator and Coffeemaker. Vibrant color accents in this dog friendly room. Connects with Room 2 - Chickadee Nest if desired
Our five unit boutique motel is situated on the North Shore, just a block off 61... All the comfort of suburban life but only steps away from the amazing restaurants and shops. The Writer's Cabin is a quaint, long established residence hidden in the oldest part of town. This historic cabin has been fully restored and modernized. It has a fireplace, a two person jetted tub, private setting, full kitchen, direct TV, vaulted ceilings, beams, windows, skylight, private patio with table and chairs, close to the harbor and all the attractions of town. This is an established vacation rental with great history- be the next chapter in the long story that is the Writer's Cabin.
The Writer's Cabin has been fully restored and modernized to provide all the creature comforts and yet remain historic in nature. Set amidst lush landscaping, the cabin is only steps from the harbor. All amenities are provided including an enameled cast iron gas fireplace, a therapeutic air tub for two, a top of the line queen bed, a well equipped modern kitchen, satellite TV with flat screen and theatre surround, an antique secretary writing desk, high speed wireless internet, and various objects of interest representative of famous writers and local writers including locally written books and Ernest Hemmingway's favorite model of typewriter. This is a fantastic location close to everything. Many of our guests ache for a connection with nature (with high thread count sheets), reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. No one says this out loud, but we think that’s their intrinsic motivation. We professionally deep clean between all guests. Ask about our "Social Distancing" vacation discount for extended stays. With nine windows and one skylight, there is great natural light throughout the little cabin. Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise. The grounds of the property are planted with a variety of native and boreal flowering plants, flowering shrubs and fruit trees. It is a garden like setting with various perennial, annual, and produce plantings. The outdoor space has a balanced blend of sun and shade, functionality and whimsicality. This is a space intended as an exclusive retreat from the rigors of small town life. It is designed so that you can be as private as your vacation requires. Dense schrubs and tall fences ensure your own seclusion. Visitors are encouraged to flag down the owners if you see them. If you wish to enjoy the The Finnish Sauna house next door, it is available for the duration of your stay for up to 4 uses for a one time fee of $49. Robes, extra towels and instructions will be provided. Pets: We want to be accepting of dogs. We love our dogs. But if we incur property damage from dogs we will remove ourselves from accepting dogs. Most vacation rentals in our region do not accept dogs and we want to keep this option open. Our future is up to you. If you love dogs and dog culture, please be a good ambassador of dog culture and let’s keep this good thing going. Only dogs- no other animals- are allowed with an acceptance of the pet addendum and pet fee of $30. Guests will receive a pet fee request once the reservation process is complete and prior to arrival. Up to one very well behaved dog up to 60lbs and their owners that are in agreement with our policies are welcome. If the dog is over 60 lbs or if there is more than one, Guests will provide to owner the following information: Type of pet, Name, Weight, Age and owner will confirm or ask questions. So send us a message and we will get back to you right away. If your dog is not habituated to portable kennels please contact us. All pets must comply with the following specifications: A) Must not exceed 60 lbs unless approved B) Must be at least 1 year old C) Must be up to date on rabies vaccinations and all other vaccinations. Heart worm preventative is highly recommended. Other important pet requirements: 1) No dogs can be left unattended for any length of time without portable kennels. Pets can get nervous in new surroundings and cause property damage with scraping, urinating, and can cause irritation to neighbors with barking or howling when you leave for dinner etc... If you have any issues with keeping your pet in a portable kennel please let us know. If your dogs are not comfortable or have not been habituated to a portable kennel you are perfectly welcome to put your pets in the car with you when you leave as long as it is not too warm out- which rarely happens in Grand Marais. 2)Your dog is never allowed off leash. Grand Marais has a leash law, and we have busy roads nearby and resident dogs on all sides that do not need the provocation. 3)Please clean up after your pet immediately, do not wait until you are completing your stay. Garbage cans are available on site. Do not let your dog do their business right near the home or near the sidewalks, and especially not on the corners of the home, the fences or rock walls. Try to get off property when doing business. 4)There are many great walks for you and your dog, if you need tips let us know. But just going down to the harbor is a great treat for most. Taking them just up the hill to the grassy curbside areas is a quick way to take care of business and is popular with the doggos. And if you want some space for them to run off leash there is a dog park up the hill. Ask us how to find it. 5)No dogs on beds or furniture without a clean, freshly washed blanket that you provide that they can’t scrape away. We use quality quilts and bed coverings and very expensive sofa material and dogs can not be allowed to scratch it and claw as it instinctively as they prepare to lay down. Thanks so much for your respect and consideration. We would love to meet your dog! We are happy to provide local knowledge on any activities, attractions, latest scuttlebut, or any other needs you may have. Feel free to contact us. Todd and Susan.
This is a very old neighborhood right near the harbor. It is a rare setting that the owners restored and preserved. It represents the Scandanavian tradition of creating micro neighborhoods within an existing neigborhood. You will see this throughout Grand Marais. It is very safe and surprisingly quiet considering it is a commercial downtown location. The noise of Hwy 61 is nicely distanced, as is the noise of the original Gunflint Trail. This particular setting is very close to all the action of town, but comfortably removed when you need a breather from all the excitement. We feel very lucky to own this special spot. Music can be heard in summer wafting through the air, fireworks are right out your front door on rare, special nights. The comings and goings of village life are all around you, yet still... this is a very private and serene location. This home is positioned on a small gravel ally with it's own driveway, it is not on a busy road.
  • This was a nice very clean and cozy cabin. Couch made a surprisingly comfortable bed. Great location for enjoying the community of Grand Marais.

    Jim2020-03-18T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage such a beautiful space, very peaceful and secluded yet super close to everything in town. We didn't have to use our car once while we were there for the weekend. It's bright, cozy, and very quiet. I would absolutely stay again.

  • The Writer’s Cabin is a great size for 2 people and has every amenity you would need. The bedroom is cozy, the living room warm with a fire place, and the kitchen has everything for cooking meals. The vaulted ceilings with exposed beams are super cool and add to the space. And the location is a block from all the downtown Grand Marais activities. I would stay there again!

The Mökki Cottage is an excellent home base from which to explore and enjoy Grand Marais - whether that’s summer festivals, fall colors or nordic skiing. Located only steps away from the harbor, this quaint home offers a rural feel while being within minutes to restaurants, cafes, pubs, shops, the folk school and so much more.
This cozy house has great curb appeal with its colorful and cheery Scandinavian design. Its warm interior finish has preserved some of the original 1938 construction such as maple hardwood flooring throughout. The home offers a nice balance of natural light through plentiful windows while still offering privacy from the lovely wooded property. The raised bed garden, wild flowers, clover ground cover, yellow roses, and mountain ash trees fill the yard giving it a wonderful wild and natural feel. The home has a cafe/booth style eating nook with wrap around windows…perfect for quaint dinners or for reading and writing. The galley style kitchen has a bar stool seating area; ideal for hanging out during meal preparation or simply for sipping your morning coffee. Sit back in the open concept living room or in the summer, relax on the lovely front porch in a comfy hanging chair. A double pull-out couch with a deluxe memory foam and fiber mattress topper is available for additional guests.
A quaint, walkable area, the cabin is nestled just across from the local library and one street away from lake Superior and the old Gunflint Trail road.

  • Great spot. Excellent base of operations for a north woods adventures. Clean and comfortable. Within walking distance of Java Moose (critical!) Spent a good amount of time on what I thought of as the reading porch — relaxing after a day snowshoeing.

  • My husband and I had a relaxing November weekend stay at the Mokki cabin in Grand Marais. Having stayed at the cabin in Hovland, we knew our stay would be great and we weren’t disappointed. Super cozy, warm and relaxing, we had everything we needed for an unplugged weekend up north (but electricity, wifi and hot running water all make the stay more comfortable as well!). The Skyhouse is proudly in keeping with the new Up North Modern movement. Other than her sister properties the Horizon, and the smaller Aurora, there is nothing like this anywhere on Earth. These are a very unique, and are a limited design intended to inspire, not just provide a roof over your head. Many of our guests ache for a connection with nature (with high thread count sheets), reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. No one says this out loud, but we think that’s their intrinsic motivation. Enjoy the unique beauty of Grand Marais from this most unique and beautiful home. Ask us about our discounts for extended "Social Distancing" stays. The Sky House is local couple Todd and Susan Miller’s newest addition to their exclusive list of vacation rental property in the heart of Grand Marais near the harbor. Designed by celebrated Minnesota architect David Salmela to capture all the needs and dreams of a visitor to Grand Marias. We hope this will be the coolest lodging in America’s Coolest Small Town. By design the Sky House provides for all the needs of a vacationing party of up to 6 people in a 1264 Sq. Ft. home. In addition, the Sky House provides an inspiring modern space that allows for privacy among those sharing the lodging, and also provides a breathtaking great room area on the top floor with fantastic views of the Grand Marais harbor, the neighborhood, and the town close by. Everything is in walking distance from our little micro community in the heart of Grand Marais. Imagine the best exclusive lodge experience without sharing walls or having to pass through a front desk. Every restaurant, bar, coffee shop, gallery and Grand Marais' famous beach are all within a very short stroll from your private residence. The home is designed in modern Nordic fashion based on the original Stabur design- a work building commonly seen in Northern Europe. This design culminates a timeline of Scandinavian and Nordic design that the Miller’s began on the property next door that also honored northern work buildings in the roots of their designs. There is off street parking under a sod roofed carport. The property is currently under construction and will be ready for occupancy for the first lucky guests starting in June of 2018. Here is a brief tour of the property and the Sky House: Begin by driving right in to the heart of Grand Marais by the harbor. Turn left up the hill 1/2 block. Pull in to the parking area just outside of the lodging. Walk up to the entry area and pass under the nordic arch to the first of 3 decks where there is room to store bikes in summer, and once inside, plenty of room to shake off the snow, hang the coats and set down the skis or snowshoes. If you are the lucky person who gets bedroom one then head down David Salmela’s trademark stairway one half flight to bedroom one. On the way there is plenty of cabinetry, as well as a bathroom and your bedroom with built in cabinets, desk, and walk out to your own private dry stacked bluestone patio. The floors are heated. If you are the lucky inhabitant of bedroom two, head up from the entry to bedroom two for built in cabinets, bath number two, and your own wrap around balcony. Each bedroom is separated by a floor for maximum privacy. Continuing up the inspiring staircase leads you to the primary gathering area on the top floor. This area is breathtaking with its expansive windows, view of the town and harbor, Lake Superior and the private grounds. There is a fully modern and capable kitchen, an architect designed built in sofa and contemporary gas fireplace. The sofa can sleep one adult or two children, and there is also a matching floor mattress for one. Note the unique skylight with modern light treatments and the push button electronic pop up television that you can leave hidden if you wish. There is also a wrap around deck on this top level with fantastic view of the rooftops and harbor and the town. The entire home has slate floors and modern cabinets. There is a utility room with full size washer and dryer. Everything about the Sky House is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. These homes have an incredibly small footprint both structurally and environmentally. The foundations were designed to take up as little of the yard as possible- by being small at the start and increasing as you go up just like the old Stabur upon which this design is based. The energy efficiency is profound because these are composed of structurally insulated panels which are incredibly efficient. No cost has been spared to make the Sky House the highest quality, most significant architectural addition to Grand Marais’ beautiful landscape. We hope you will find it warm, welcoming, and a once in a lifetime experience in one of the world’s most magical places. 6 persons maximum, including children. Be sure to list children counts in the reservation form.

  • Great place that is walking from everything downtown. The view from the living room is spectacular. It was the perfect place to sit with a cup of coffee and some music while taking in the view of the lake. The stay was better than I could’ve expected.

  • This was our second stay at one of the three sisters. The view from sky house was even better than life is art and that was hard to beat! We love having a kitchen to stay in for dinner when the town is pretty quiet on winter nights. The big kitchen table is perfect for puzzles and games. Can’t wait for our next trip up.

This is the heart of old Grand Marais. We are situated very close to the harbor and we are enveloped in lake air- cool in the summer and slightly warmer in the winter. It is a magical setting where we are close to everything, but comfortably removed from the excitement of a small town when you need your personal space. The Horizon is part of a small collection of 3 vacation rentals. The SkyHouse, The Horizon, and Aurora. These three homes share private grounds and parking on a site that was in the same family for generations. We are only two lots from the harbor, not next to any noisy roads or highways, and the owners live very close by. You can drive in, park your car, set your keys on the counter and not need them again for the duration of your stay. Sea gulls greet you when you rise, and live music from festivals drifts on the air in the evenings of summer. The winter storms are in their full glory when viewed from the large windows of the 3rd floor in the highly energy efficient home.
  • Great views, unique and fun building design, kids loved the hideaway tv 🙂.

  • A group of five of us spent a wonderful weekend at Todd and Susan’s place. Our first night out we met new friends at a restaurant who wondered how we got “so lucky to score that place!” Book in advance and don’t look back! It really is the coolest space. We loved the quietness that the split floor bedrooms provided, but enjoyed the wonderful third floor communal space with amazing views. We were lucky to catch a sunny winter weekend but would have been fine being cooped up all weekend too—they have great games and puzzles. Couldn’t recommend enough, enjoy your next trip!

    Eleanor2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Such an enjoyable stay and truly, such a beautiful space.

    Cassy2020-03-01T00:00:00Z
  • It cost a little more than I wanted to spend, but it was worth it! The view was incredible, the space is so beautiful, each bedroom has its own bathroom, and the view was amazing! I hope I can return next year!

    Jeanne2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • This place is true to the photos- absolutely gorgeous! The space was perfect for the 4 people in our party. Small details in this home really set it apart from other rentals: fireplace, balconies, water view, immaculately clean kitchen with new appliances and kitchenware, separate thermostats ON EACH FLOOR, local artwork hanging, and responsive owner's which is really appreciated. We will definitely stay here again.

    Collin2020-02-04T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful, clean space with stylish details and an awesome view. Great location and walkable to town. Close to Gunflint trail as well. Would definitely stay here again.

    Rachel2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • An absolutely awesome stay in a beautiful, thoughtful space with a calmness that helps you regenerate. The view is of course outstanding. Everything was clean, kitchen was well stocked, beds were comfortable and the rooms were really set up well so that you could unpack and be at rest.

    Kate2020-01-26T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing space with great views of the bay, lighthouse and downtown. Within walking distance to all of the great restaurants and shops. Super clean! Easy to find. Thought it was great there was a covered carport space for guests. Definitely recommend and we will be looking to come back and share with friends and family.

    Joe2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • A quiet stay that was a perfect landing place for a few days of exploring the north shore in winter. We loved hearing the waves of Lake Superior and being close to several state parks with hiking trails. The sauna was easy to use and the cabin is beautiful, cozy and warm. The kitchen had what we needed for preparing meals too. We would recommend this cabin to friends and family :) Thank you!

    Jess2019-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • This small cabin is exactly as advertised, but we found it to be even better than we expected. If you appreciate design and attention to detail, along with a fabulous location far up the North Shore, and if you do not demand every modern luxury while at a cabin in the woods, you will be delighted with this place.

    Nicolle2019-12-26T00:00:00Z
  • A quiet little cabin in the woods, just across the street from Lake Superior. The craftsmanship of this hand-built cabin was impressive. We enjoyed everything about it. Simple, quiet and enjoyable. We especially enjoyed the wood-fire sauna. Can't wait to go back!

    Jared2019-12-23T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was exactly as pictured. A nice small space for hanging out and relaxing in the woods. You’re right off the side road but there’s almost no traffic so privacy is great! The sauna was easy to use and a great amenity in the winter. The stove worked like a charm and the gas heater kept the place warm in subzero temps. A lot of kitchen supplies are provided if you are wondering what you actually need to bring to cook!

  • Laurel and Keith provided a wonderful home away from home. Basecamp is only a five minute walk to Lake Superior (and the Angry Trout). Our room was immaculately clean, and Laurel and Keith provided us with coffee and complimentary drink tokens for a nearby watering hole. I should add that they were immensely helpful and responded immediately to our messages. We hope to return to Grand Marais, and Laurel and Keith's place will be our number one choice next time.

  • Hungry Hippie is a great place to stay. Each room is cozy and clean. The communal kitchen is stocked with what you need to make simple meals -- there are even freeze dried meals one can purchase to make or take hiking. The bathrooms are spacious and clean. I really liked the rural setting that is secluded but still close enough to Grand Marais for activities there.

This is a private room in the lower level of the hostel. It has a queen sized bed and a view of Lake Superior! It does not have in- floor heat as the rest of the hostel does, but it does stay plenty warm during the cooler seasons.
We are located on a quiet & peaceful property that overlooks Lake Superior. We are a short drive from Grand Marais, and close to most outdoor recreational trails & parks.
  • I come here on my work trips and I love staying here and will continue to come back.

  • Great location

    Mike2020-03-09T00:00:00Z
  • The last few years I’ve stayed in or around Grand Marais when skiing at Lutsen. My biggest complaint, about the hotels I stayed at in the area, is they weren’t very clean and the rooms were very small. I loved how clean the loft was and it’s actually much bigger in person. I would definitely stay here again.

    Brooke2020-03-03T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect location and incredibly clean. Definitely recommend.

    David2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • Stayed here while taking class at North House Folk School. Apartment was conveniently located to the school and a lovely, quiet, warm place to return to at the end of the day. Very comfortable, clean, attractive. Cindy was very helpful with check in and restaurant recommendations. Liked the off street parking too. Thanks!

    Mary2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Booked with Cindy for a winter friends get away. The loft was bigger than I expected and housed four of us quite comfortably! Loved the proximity to Voyager and the sunrise views of the bay from the front porch. Would definitely stay again!

    Mary Beth2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • A geat place to stay. Good starting point to many cross country trails. Was very accommodating with our changes.

    Gayl2020-01-20T00:00:00Z
  • Great place for two couples, great views, extremely close to town, nice and clean. Would totally come here again.

    Daniel2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Very cozy and nice space in a good location. The kitchen was well-equipped, basic necessities were well stocked, and the view is incredible! Cindy was great with communication and the check in was easy - no issues at all. We had a great time at the Harbor House Loft and will be back for future trips up north! :)

This cozy cabin provides a perfect getaway and is a gem in all seasons, especially during the fall colors or a blowing winter storm. Timber frame cabin built on a hilltop, on 20 acres of old growth maples. Walls of glass, a screened in porch and a wrap around deck bring the outdoors inside. The ridge top location has spectacular views through the trees - with lake views after the leaves drop. The property also boasts a fantastic wood fired cedar sauna - perfect for rejuvenating.
The timber frame cabin is located in Hovland MN, which is 30 minutes north of Grand Marais, near the Canadian border and lake Superior. The cabin sleeps up to 3 (1 double bed & 1 sleeping cot). Camping is an option with the wide outdoor space and screened in porch, email for details. Folks will need to bring: - Sleeping bags/blankets/pillows for beds - Drinking water. There is rain barrel water for washing, but not for drinking. In winter, snow can be melted on the wood stove or gas burner for washing. - Cooler for perishables - Headlamps/flashlight to get to the outhouse and sauna Cabin is equipped with: - wood sauna - 100 yards from cabin - outhouse - wood stove for heating - wood shed with axe, hatchet & buck saw (be prepared to split your kindling) - gas lighting - 2-burner gas cook top - wall mounted gas space heater with thermostat - outdoor cook grill (bring your own charcoal or use fire wood) - dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, cutting board, kettle, dish washing basin Cleaning Fee: We do not charge a cleaning fee, so long as the cabin is left in the same condition (cleaned) as it was upon arrival. If the cabin is left uncleaned, a $50 penalty will be charged from the damage deposit. Remember to pack out your garbage. Please be kind and leave some dry kindling inside for the next guests.
  • This was an amazing stay. My wife and I spent the weekend enjoying the beauty of this space. With the large windows it felt like outdoors was just another room. The sauna was fantastic and there was plenty of quality wood for heat. It was definitely an adventure getting there. Be prepared for a long and somewhat challenging walk with a sled full of gear if you come in the winter. We will definitely stay here again!

    Josh2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Incredibly secluded cabin in the woods, definitely worth the extreme hike up the hill dragging our supplies and food through the snow. We are already booking our next stay here for this summer and can’t wait to come back!

    Rebecca2020-02-11T00:00:00Z
  • I had an absolutely wonderful three nights up at the mokki. My only regret is not adding a few more nights. I actually met Stevie and Lonnie on my hike up to the hut. They were both so lovely, and had even started a fire in the stove to greet me. I loved the slow, simple pace of each day. With no connections to the outside world, I reconnected with all the pastimes I'd lost touch with. I spent my days cooking, shoveling snow, stocking wood, reading, writing, drawing, and just being in the moment. There is profound beauty and peace in this place! I would recommend 100x over.

    Rachel2020-02-07T00:00:00Z

    Jaina2019-12-22T00:00:00Z
  • This place is amazing!

    Maxwell2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • This is our second time visiting Lonnie’s place during the winter. It’s always a great experience that’s worth the crazy uphill hike & blizzard/snowstorms. We love the silence, solitude, and sauna experiences!

    Paola2019-12-01T00:00:00Z

Entire home right near the harbor. Featured in many magazines- see list below. Designed by celebrated Minnesota architect David Salmela to capture all the needs and dreams of a visitor to Grand Marias. 1 bedroom, 1 bath, a large living area, a patio, a deck, a laundry, and stunning views of the harbor. The Aurora is a very close walk to all the town's attractions. Dog fees apply, see below. Maximum 4 persons including children. Ask about our "Social Distancing Vacation" discounts!
As featured in Minnesota Monthly, Minneapolis St-Paul Magazine, Arch- Minnesota, Arch Daily International, and winner of the 2019 Architecture of Necessity Honorary Mention - Virserum Konsthall in Sweden, and the 2020 U.S. WoodWorks Wood Design Award for Regional Excellence award. Come stay in a functioning piece of art! The Aurora is local couple Todd and Susan Miller’s newest addition to their exclusive list of vacation rental properties in the heart of Grand Marais near the harbor. The Aurora was designed by celebrated Minnesota architect David Salmela, to capture all the needs and dreams of a visitor to Grand Marias. Many of our guests ache for a connection with nature (with high thread count sheets), reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. No one says this out loud, but we think that’s their intrinsic motivation. Our properties are professionally deep cleaned between each guest and we offer discounts for longer stays. The Aurora is the smaller sister to The Sky House and the Horizon, two sibling properties to Aurora in the small but exclusive enclave called "tre søstra" which means "three sisters" in Danish. Aurora is one bedroom, one bath, plus a very nice sleeper sofa for one adult or two children, and floor bed for one. There is a roomy main living space that seems to float above the area buildings and has wonderful view of the harbor. Although designed ideally as an upscale oasis for two, 4 people can stay here nicely. The Aurora provides an inspiring modern space that allows for privacy among those sharing the lodging, and also provides a captivating view from the great room area on the top floor of the Grand Marais harbor, the neighborhood, and the town close by. She has a desk area in the bedroom, a walk out blue stone patio from the bedroom, a planning desk in the hall, an all tile bathroom with walk in shower, a large entry area, a laundry, a beautiful flight of stairs to the upper level, a balcony, panoramic windows, fully modern kitchen with top of the line appliances, lighted drawers and butcher block countertops; dining for 4 with 6 possible, a custom sofa that sleeps one adult, or two children, a custom floor bed for one, and a gas fireplace. There is off street parking under a sod roofed car port. Here is a brief tour of the property and the Aurora: Begin by driving right in to the heart of Grand Marais and pause by the harbor. You will be turning left up the hill. Pull in to the parking area just outside of the lodging. Walk up to the entry area past the nordic arch to the first deck where there is room to store bikes in summer, and once inside, plenty of room for the whole group to shake off the snow, hang the coats and set down the skis or snowshoes. Head down David Salmela’s trademark stairway one half flight to bedroom one. On the way there is plenty of cabinetry, as well as a bathroom and your bedroom with built in cabinets, desk, and walk out to your own private dry stacked bluestone patio. The floors are heated. Note the unique skylight with modern light treatments and the push button electronic pop up television that you can leave hidden if you wish. There is also a wrap around deck. The entire home has slate floors and modern cabinets. There is a utility room with full size washer and dryer. Everything about The Aurora is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. No cost has been spared to make the Aurora the highest quality, most significant architectural addition to Grand Marais’ beautiful landscape. We hope you will find it warm, welcoming, and a once in a lifetime experience in one of the world’s most magical places. We have written a detailed guide to what we consider the most special "secret" places in the area. You can pick and chose your own adventures with it for reference depending on your tastes and the weather. That guide is available to you inside the home. Maximum of 4 persons, including any children. Be sure to include any children counts in your reservation request.
This is a special neighborhood within the oldest section of Grand Marais. This was a property that was in the same family for generations, and now it is newly developed by the celebrated Minnesota Nordic architect David Salmela from Duluth. Pull in, park your car in the protected carport with it's green roof, and leave your keys on the counter- you won't need them again unless you are voyaging up the Gunflint Trail or to some of the more distant attractions. We love living here, we live next door. The lake air surrounds the property and the seagulls fill the air with their cries when the fisherman bring in their catch. This is a true micro village in the harbor village of Grand Marais. Welcome to our neighborhood.
  • Lovely modern Scandinavian design and great location. Very walkable.

    Krista2020-02-09T00:00:00Z

  • Super clean and light. Great location with with easy access to downtown and Pincushion cross country skiing! Loved our stay!!

    Kate2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Aurora is a fantastic place to stay. The entire small house is extremely well designed, and captures the Scandinavian flair. We WILL definitely rent the Aurora again in the future. My only advice for anyone considering this rental are twofold: 1) Be comfortable with stairs. The stairs both inside and out are very safe, well lit, and have guard rails, but if you want a single floor rental, this AirBnB is not for you. 2) The shower points down directly from the ceiling. Making adjustments to which way it points and directs water was impossible for my 5'1" wife. The ceiling is high.

  • The Aurora is absolutely gorgeous, a great place to create or relax. It’s in the perfect location in Grand Marais and has stunning views of the lake and the stars at night. Todd was extremely communicative and accommodating. We would highly recommend any of their properties and will hopefully be returning as soon as possible!

  • This place is amazing! The view is incredible and the kitchen was fully stocked for us to make our own meals. We pretty much sat by the fire, looking out the windows all day!

  • Todd and Susan have a beautiful, sparkling clean and comfortable place. The location can’t be beat. Communication with Todd was excellent and timely. Perfect place to come back to relax after a day of hiking. Highly recommend!

Placed along the gorgeous Fall River, this A-frame cabin has a secluded wilderness feel, just two miles from Grand Marais. Take advantage of Grand Marais' renowned restaurants, shops, and shoreline or relax by your river-side campfire after a day of exploration or relaxation. Explore the rivers, and trails of this 25 acre wooded lot. Rest or catch up on a good book in the sun-filled and spacious interior, from a hammock between two birch trees, or on the large front deck surrounded by nature.
Our family loves hiking the north shore's rivers and always thought it would be great to have a cabin on one of those great rivers. Here it is! Even though the cabin is located only a mile from the shore of Lake Superior and 2.5 miles from Grand Marais, it maintains a truly North woods, off grid feel: a winding private gravel road heads up the hill from Lake Superior, crossing over a small creek, where you'll park at the trail head. From there you'll hike 400 yards (about a 5 minute walk) on a foot path to this charming cabin in the woods, perched along the bluff of the Fall River. A cart is available if you want it. The cabin has a well equipped kitchen with pots and pans, silverware, glassware, a propane stovetop, a double insulated cooler, and over 30 gallons of water for drinking, dishes, and cleaning. There is a cozy bedroom downstairs with a queen bed and up the spiral staircase is a window-filled loft with three twin beds. All beds will be supplied with pillows and bedding. There is a small solar powered system supporting the lighting for the bedroom, kitchen, and loft and a phone charger. The Sun-Mar compost toilet is environmentally friendly, convenient, and comfortable. The deck and included hammocks offer the opportunity to relax and bask in the 25 acre wood and listen to the river run. Some will enjoy splashing in the river, or swimming beneath the waterfall where the Fall River meets the lake. Some will use the supplied solar shower or buy a day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA (around $10) to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool. The newly constructed A-frame (2019-2020) is comfortable with many windows and a vaulted ceiling that offer abundant natural lighting and breezes. Kids and adults alike will enjoy walking along the bank or through the moving water of the larger Fall River, or racing sticks, and rock searching on the smaller creek. From the cabin, expect to see deer, squirrels, and birds ranging from songbirds to woodpeckers, grouse, ravens, and bald eagles. The woods are also home to less frequent visitors like black bear and moose. Coyote and timber-wolves can be heard howling nearby as well. Also keep an eye out for edible (and non-edible) mushrooms as well as wild raspberries. All of this, a short bike ride, run, or drive from the Lake Superior shoreline and Grand Marais!
Close to Lake Superior and Grand Marais, surrounded by 25 acres of mixed forests, Fall river, and babbling creek.

Perched along the scenic lakeside, Croftville Road, you can enjoy the quiet Lake Superior life while being a short bike ride (use our bikes) to "the coolest small town in America", Grand Marais.
The loft has a well-equipped, full size kitchen, spacious bedroom, and charming living and dining areas overlooking the lake. It's a great spot to venture out, whether it be hiking up one of the nearby waterfalls, going for a paddle, wetting a fishing line, discovering a secluded swimming hole, or enjoying some of the wonderful eateries in town. Queen size bed in bedroom. There is a pull out sofa in the living room that will sleep one adult or two children, and a comfy trifold 6" memory foam queen mattress to sleep two more adults.
The loft is located on a quiet lake Superior frontage road with more foot traffic than vehicle traffic. Some year round residents as well as many small summer lake cottages.
  • I booked this place for my first solo trip and the space was absolutely wonderful. You could hear the waves of superior at night and you could see deer outside pretty much all the time. Croftville rd is perfect for a nice little walk along the shoreline. The location was great being just a couple minutes from downtown. I cannot wait to come back again one day

  • We had a wonderful time at Colette and Justin’s place. It makes for a spectacular home base to explore the area and also a picturesque spot to stay in and spend the day reading and relaxing.

  • Close to Grand Marais. Clean. Great hosts. Good communication. Comfortable bed. Good views of Lake Superior.

  • Colette and Justin were perfect host. They were helpful with a hiking spot that was amazing and not a spot we would have found on our own. There loft was as described and very comfortable. The view of Lake Superior was amazing. I would recommend staying at Colette and Justin's place.

    Laura2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • This is a super comfortable loft, with everything we needed for a family of four. We particularly enjoyed the amazing view of the lake and better yet the sound of waves crashing! We highly recommend Colette and Justin’s place!

The Hungry Hippie Hostel has added a campground with Frost River canvas wall tents. Our version of Glamping! We provide the tent, the platform, an airmatress and the breathtaking view of Lake Superior. Our Glamping Tents are located within 200 feet of our brand new shower house. The shower house is divided into mens & womens spaces. Each space having two showers, three toilets and two sinks. The campground has a communal firepit with picnic tables.
You will need to bring your sleeping bag (or blankets), pillow and a towel.
We are perched 600ft above Lake Superior with breathtaking views along the entire property.
  • 12 stars for Charlie, their dog, who showed us the way to the parking lot and our tent. We thought Jeremy was kidding when he said Charlie would show us the way. Smooth check-in and easy to find, fun little stay akin to summer camp with a clean bathroom facility. My wife and i had a fantastic stay, we would come back again whenever we visit the area.

    Shawn2019-09-30T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for a perfect little get away, this place is it! So much attention to detail and could not have asked for a more relaxing and beautiful place to call home for the weekend.

    Tara2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • Let me start by saying Kate and Jeremy are brilliant! They couldn’t have set up the farm any better! Easy to navigate. Easy to access. Clean and absolutely beautiful. I rented a glamping tent just so I didn’t have to deal with setting up and tearing down camp for one night when all I really was in town for was fall photos. This was not only the perfect solution but the most beautiful location to do it in. I woke up at 3:30 am and took a few photos of the starts from the porch of my glamping tent. And it couldn’t have been more convenient! I will definitely be coming here for all my future trips when camping isn’t convenient! Thanks so much!!!!

    Ashli2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • A charming place. We did the glamping tents - there are only three so it doesn’t feel crowded. They’re cute and zen-feeling: just a bed, two chairs on a sweet little deck, and a couple of solar glass-jar lights that are just bright enough to find your way but not overbearing. And a mosquito net door to protect the bed. If you’re sitting in the chairs, bring some bug dope. The view is great - lake in the distance, prairie field in front of you (where we saw a hawk hunting low to the ground), and plenty of mowed space so the bug-phobic feel better! Shower house is clean and adorable. We stuck our heads into the hostel and it is also super inviting. And don’t get me started on Charlie, best dog ever. Kate and Jeremy are the friendliest people and also run a delicious restaurant in town. The only heads up: I think they mention making coffee , but that’s only in the hostel, for hostel folk. If camping, bring a stove. There’s a fire ring for the hostel and a separate one for the campers.

    Linda2019-09-21T00:00:00Z
  • this was an unexpected gem - a really great place to stay whether you decided to camp with your own gear, be inside the hostel or rent one of the tents like we did. everything was clean, beautiful and the view of Lake Superior in the distance is unparalleled. We also love the dog Charlie who came to say hello when we drove up.

    Kay Michael2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing location, very comfortable and affordable. Hosts are super nice. I’ll definitely be back.

    Heidi2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Rained the whole night but we stayed dry and it was soothing. Woke up to a beautiful sunrise. Really nice bathhouse.

    Leah2019-08-27T00:00:00Z
  • Really lovely property - it almost feels like a small, really nice campground. The bathrooms are very clean and comfortable. You’re sleeping on an air mattress so be sure to bring enough blankets - though Jeremy said they had extras just in case. It’s about a 15 minute drive into Grand Marais. Consider bringing your own French press if you’d like to enjoy some coffee in the morning before heading out. We met Jeremy and he was super friendly and helpful.

Location: Grand Marais At Vintage Voyageur you will find yourself in the heart of the quaint and peaceful town of Grand Marais, MN. Located just a block from the Grand Marais Harbor and the Voyageur Brewing Company and down the street from the Grand Marais Art Colony. Vintage Voyageur is a great location and easy walking distance to everything in Grand Marais. Vintage Voyageur (not to be confused with Voyageur House, located nearby) is a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 story home located right in town. From The North House Folk School to locally owned ma and pa shops that make this small town so unique. There are also half a dozen restaurants and bars just a few blocks away. The local library, YMCA, and several parks are also within walking distance. You could easily arrive, park your car, and never have to use it again during your stay! However, if it's an adventure that you seek, you've come to the right place! Vintage Voyageur is centrally located to so many outdoor activities available on the North Shore that you could come for a month and still find that you haven't done everything. Head down the shore 10 miles to Cascade State Park where you will find a beautiful waterfall after a short, easy hike. Up for more of a challenge? Just head 15 miles up the shore to Judge C.R. Magney State Park for a 1+ mile hike which includes several flights of stairs to view the mysterious Devil's Kettle waterfall. Here, half of the Brule River flows down a typical waterfall and out into Lake Superior. The other half goes into a mysterious hole and disappears- and no one knows where it goes! Add in miles and miles of hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling trails and you will find adventure all year long during your stay at Vintage Voyageur. At the end of a long day, come on home and head out to a local restaurant or cook a family meal in the full kitchen. Enjoy it in the dining room or out on the back porch. Then watch the sunset by the harbor from the front yard and roast marshmallows in the firepit in the back yard. Say hello to those passing by - locals and tourists alike - and feel like you truly belong in this beautiful little town.
The Grand Marais Harbor and downtown Grand Marais, with many quaint ma and pa shops and restaurants, is just a block away. The Voyageur Brewing Company is right across the street (and down a little). The neighborhood is lively and in near everything Grand Marais has to offer.

    Dave2018-10-22T00:00:00Z
  • The "Vintage Voyageur" house suited us just fine, and we had a great time in the Grand Marais area. Our only complaint is that we had to transfer garbage to a neighboring community a few miles away. I think paying a $50 cleaning fee should include removing garbage, since the dump site is a few miles away.

    Gayle2018-10-17T00:00:00Z
  • The Vintage Voyager was a cute and cozy place to stay. It was very close to everything in town!

    Jennifer2018-10-15T00:00:00Z
  • The Vintage Voyageur Cottage is right in the heart of Grand Marais, so it's easy to walk to everything in town. We had a very comfortable stay and enjoyed the spacious kitchen and cozy spaces. Our only "complaint" was that, while there is a large flat screen TV in the living room, it doesn't have an antennae or channels. So, its possible to watch DVDs, but not television. That wasn't a huge problem for us, but we would have liked to catch the news here and there.

The 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin' is a restored historic fisherman's home built of logs around 1900. You are right in the heart of town and near the harbor. 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a huge dining room, gas fireplace, front porch and yard. Dog fees apply, if bringing a dog please see information below. You have access to a Finnish sauna for an additional fee. Please see description included.
The 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin' is a restored historic commercial fisherman's home built of logs around 1900. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. We are less than 100 yards from the water. There are 3 well appointed bedrooms, 2 full baths, a huge dining room, a roomy pine living room with gas woodstove fireplace, a front cedar porch, and a natural slate patio. The original log home with it's well appointed kitchen and huge dining room is the core of the structure. The logs for the Cabin were hand hewn a century ago and show the broad ax marks from the original fisherman builders. The kitchen is thoroughly modern with stainless appliances, solid maple counter tops, and a two level snack bar. The property was completely renovated down to it's bones from 2003 to 2007, using recycled or repurposed materials wherever possible and is now a highly energy efficient home. The walls are adorned with local art and mementos of the great age of commercial fishing and logging here in Grand Marias. Many of our guests ache for a connection with nature (with high thread count sheets), reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. No one says this out loud, but we think that’s their intrinsic motivation. The view of the old harbor from the living room and the deck is stunning. There is also a view from the 3rd bedroom deck. Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise. The grounds of the property are planted with a variety of native and boreal flowering plants, flowering shrubs and fruit trees. It is a garden like setting with various perennial, annual, and produce plantings. The waxwings regularly invade the ash trees, along with fiercly dueling ruby throated hummingbirds. Visitors are encouraged to tour the property and observe the goings on in the gardens and the adjacent Boathouse! The Boathouse is an impressive timberframe structure that was built by the current owner as a workshop for building and restoring boats and for teaching classes and other public and private events. Stop in and see what's going on, maybe you will be recruited in to service to help on whatever project is under way! Please, no parties or large gatherings with non guests. We love dogs. Single dogs are allowed if under 40 lbs with a $30 pet fee, they must be clean and house trained and must not be left unnatended and always kept on leash when outside. No dogs under 1 year old. If you have any questions please call to discuss your pets before booking. Any dogs larger than 40 lbs, and any dogs more than one must be approved by the owners. The base rate includes 6 people. For a video of the property go to https://youtu.be/SCYxqpIyEFA Please give us a call if you have any questions. If you wish to enjoy the The Finnish Sauna house, it is available for the duration of your stay for a one time fee of $49. Robes, extra towels and instructions will be provided. Thank you! Todd and Susan Miller
This is a great little pocket neighborhood in old Grand Marais right near the harbor and very easy walking distance to all attractions.
  • A beautiful cabin with shining polished floors and walls and ceiling: exquisite workmanship. A large dining table that brings everyone together. Lake Superior is across the street with every shade of blue. The perfect get away whether you fish or don't!

    Padmaja2020-03-20T00:00:00Z
  • We fit seven guys, some sharing beds, with enough space for all of us to relax and reminisce around the faux fireplace, cook and eat around the long dining table, then use the table for some board and card games. We almost all fit in the sauna. It was a space that brought us all closer together, with enough for us to have some privacy too. The hosts answered all our questions (even those we could have answered ourselves by reading their messages prior to arriving). A great little town and not far from adventures! Our adventure was Lutsen. Watch the highway for deer though!
