  • Amy's place is a warm, stylish, and clean home with a very comfortable bed, variety of pillow styles (very important to me), and close to a lot of shopping if you need access to that. Amy and her family are very warm, respectful and are comfortable to be around. They have a super friendly and trained dog, who is just a sweetheart! Overall, the location of the home was perfect for me, close to La Crosse, shopping, outdoor adventures and the highway. I would totally recommend this space to anyone! Thanks Amy and family for a great weekend!

A lower level to yourself with a kitchenette area, bathroom, living room and two bedrooms. It has its own private entrance through the garage and off street parking. The bathroom is large and has a rain shower head with detachable hose. There is no bathtub. This is a great place to stay while you are visiting friends or visiting the many area attractions.
The pine trees whisper on our acre of flat prairie land off the Holland Air Park. The air field is active, but only used by smaller plane hobby pilot neighbors. Bicyclists use the road out in front of our house to go between bike trails. We have a swingset with fort that can be shared with our grandchildren that visit often.
On the Airfield side of the neighborhood we have mostly retirees. On the opposite side of the street we have a growing subdivision of young families with children. It's the best of both worlds. Lots of places to walk or bike without getting run over. Quiet, but not isolated. Its a residential area. The grocery and gas stores are in Holmen or Galesville.
  • The place was awesome! Very clean, organized and spacious! I’d love to come back here again.

Hike, bike and ski the Driftless region. Fish, sail and hunt. Recreation abounds. Meet friends midway. Join a family celebration. Enjoy the culture and excitement of downtown La Crosse. Rest after work, medical visits or travel. Breezy Point Cottage will be your home while you visit La Crosse. Our cottage is also a destination itself if you are looking for quiet to create, work, spend time with another, or just get away from it all. Our guests enjoy the natural beauty, comfort and charm.
At Breezy Point you will have complete access to our lake frontage with picnic table and dock on Lake Onalaska though the view of the lake is limited from the cottage. The sparkling clean rooms include a full kitchen and bath, one private bedroom with a new queen bed and a common/living area. That space includes a very comfortable new full sofa sleeper and another new sofa to stretch out on as well as a dining/work area. A smart TV with digital analog (antenna) channels and Netflix and Roku is provided. We do not provide cable but you will have many viewing options. We offer a large outside deck for relaxation and dining with a limited view of the lake. There’s plenty of off-street parking for your car and boat. All furnishings and mechanicals at the cottage are new and accented with original art and authentic antiques. Décor is informal and in good taste without being stuffy. Please take the time to read everything on this listing about the cottage and our house rules now so you will know if our place will meet your expectations. Your questions are welcome.
Breezy Point Cottage is located near the lakefront at the edge of a residential area on French Island, which is within the City of La Crosse. Everything on the island is within a couple miles of us, including the airport, !-90, and the Mississippi lock and dam system, though none of these networks have any visual or sound effect on our location. Nelson County Park and a private sailboat club are located at the northern end. There are several marinas on either side of French Island. We have a few casual restaurants/bars, some with entertainment, as well as a grocery store and a couple gas stations. You will find many more recreational, cultural, dining, entertainment and shopping opportunities in the greater La Crosse area on the "mainland", just a few minutes away. Please take the time to read everything on this listing about the cottage and our house rules now so you will know if our place will meet your expectations. Your questions are welcome.
  • Awesome little cabin. Cozy. Nice decor. Great access to the river.

    Jonathan2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was very cozy and quiet. A great alternative to staying right in town - it's close, but peaceful + comfortable. Pam was easily available by message if I had any questions. I recommend!

  • Pam’s place is amazing!!!

    Richard2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This cottage is super clean, close to everything you might want to explore in the area and hosted by truly super hosts. The decorating is charming, the sofas comfy and it's a perfect spot for retreat. The amenities and personal touches exceed most other AirBnBs I have visited. I would love to return in the summer or fall.

    Laura2020-02-10T00:00:00Z
  • I definitely recommend this adorable, sunny cottage! Clean and comfortable with a well-stocked kitchen if you plan to cook and plenty of towels and linens. The cottage is on the host’s property, as described- but still is very private, we didn’t see them during our stay. Self check-in was easy and the bed was comfortable. The cottage is about a 15 minute drive from downtown La Crosse- this spot is a no-brainer if you’ve got a car and want a spot near the water.

  • My husband and I spent several nights at Waterfront Studio. Abbie was helpful and provided quick responses to questions we had. We had a lovely time.

  • Awesome place on the water, really clean and great location and communication. Exactly as described but even better views and peaceful and relaxing.

    Craig2019-07-30T00:00:00Z
  • Cute and cozy and right on the water! The water has a lot of weeds so don’t plan on swimming, but we enjoyed the canoe/kayaks! The place was clean and everything was in great condition.

    Lindsey2019-07-28T00:00:00Z
  • Wonderful place and beautiful space. Thank you for a great retreat!

    Pamela2019-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Great place, a few steps on the water. Wish I had found this before this year as we get sick of paying and staying in hotels for hockey! 5 min from Onalaska hockey rink 🙌🏻!

    Heidi2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • I love everything about this place, from the thoughtful little touches that made my stay pleasant to the peace and quiet of the general area. I especially enjoyed the mornings and evenings sitting in the screened-in porch enjoying the views of the water and listening to the birds sing. The restored prairie just across the road was also a wonderful place to walk around. It's a cozy place to relax next to the water while still being within a short drive of restaurants and whatever entertainment you might be in the mood for. I'll be going back.

    Dean2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy, comfortable and amazingly clean! Great location for hiking (loved Brady's Bluff), biking and enjoying the fireworks at Riverfest. Abbie quickly responded to questions and recommended great restaurants (Red Pines and Nutbush). We had everything we needed for our short stay including fresh picked kale and spinach from Abbie's garden!

    Jake2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • Carma and her boyfriend were both very friendly during my week-long stay. Quiet and clean home- worked perfectly when I needed a place to stay in the evenings after work!

    Emily2020-02-14T00:00:00Z
  • Carma ranks at the top with 2 other hosts I have had, who are the epitome of what it means to be a gracious host--making guests feel welcomed and comforted and like they have space to be on their own as well as offer ways to connect and be involved with their household.

    Rita2020-02-01T00:00:00Z
  • Even though my time at Carma's home was short, it was honestly the best experience I've had. It was so comfortable and she was super flexible with arrival times, she also loves to know what's going on or where you're off to next, which I appreciated telling her about! I definitely recommend staying at Carma's house!

    Taehjona2020-01-11T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean! I have allergies to cat dander and didn't sneeze once, despite a cat living in the house. That shows how clean it is. Great value as well! Would definitely recommend.

  • Ended up staying in the cabin next door run by her sister so I can't speak a lot for Angie and DJs particular cabin. HOWEVER, they looked very similar from what I can tell, and Abbie's was AMAZING!!!! It was sooo cute with so many thoughtful touchs - including fresh baked cookies waiting for us, adult and children coloring books in the drawer, and all of the soap was the seventh generation brand - environmentally conscientious place!! Local tips for all the local hiking. Location was amazing. I will definitely be back when it's warm, if they'll have me! :)

    Hannah2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • Angie’s place was very pleasant and cute. I will definitely keep the cabin on my favorites list for my travels to the Onalaska area next fall! The view of the lake is beautiful and bike trails right across the street is an added bonus!

    Carrie2019-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing location, right next to the water with a beautiful view while being on dock. Can’t wait to be back!

    Jordie2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • What a cozy little cottage on Lake Onalaska! It was the perfect size for our family of 4, including 2 teens. The linens were top-notch! The place was super clean! Responses from Angie were welcoming. The amenities of having bikes, kayaks, charcoal grill, and board games were great even if the weather didn't cooperate! We would definitely stay here again when visiting the La Crosse area!

    Jerri2019-10-13T00:00:00Z

  • This was our first Airbnb; I have to say Angie and DJ were wonderful hosts and we will be looking forward to our next trip. I had multiple questions every day, and they were always quick to respond. Also a great location, expecially if you like kayaking, biking, hiking, and running into town for dinner.

Full upstairs available! Includes a bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, and 1 garage space! I may rarely need to wash dishes in the kitchen but for the most part, I won't be up there. The fridge & freezer will have plenty of room for any food you may bring. The living room has a 55" TV, and a sleeper-couch. Bring a laptop, console, or roku for the TV, its not "smart". We can share my wi-fi. I live downstairs and will have access to my own bathroom, bedroom and living room down there.
My home is bi-level style, which means that you need to be able to climb a flight of stairs to get into my home!!!! I do not believe that my home is wheel-chair or handicap accessible. I do have a washer-and-dryer in my home, however, they are downstairs. Guests may use the washer/dryer only if I am present, because I will typically keep the downstairs locked. I will not allow people to go down stairs unless I am present. Guests have full access to the kitchen and are welcome to use utensils, make food, bring food, and store food in the large fridge/freezer. I own a separate fridge/freezer downstairs so I shouldn't be using your upstairs kitchen except to wash dishes. I will not pilfer your food.
My house is less than a quarter mile away from an awesome bike trail which can connect you to the Elroy-Sparta trail and even to Hixon Forest with minimal road-crossings if you're willing to put in the miles! This is an EXCELLENT home for a medium or long distance hiking or biking crew looking to explore upper and lower Hixon! 3 miles from UWL campus, 3.5 miles to the Valley View Mall. The street that my house is on sees minimum traffic and I live in a very nice and quiet neighborhood with friendly neighbors, yet it is also less than one mile away from the north-side bar strip.
  • Comfortable bed, quiet neighborhood, great garage, easy to get around.

  • This is a place that is very laid back , and stylish ! My stay was great .

  • Matthew's place is a good value. It was comfortable, warm, quiet and well furnished. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. Guests have the use of the whole upstairs but the kitchen is shared, as Matthew explains. Matthew always answered our questions immediately. He is a good host. The apartment is a nice set up and the neighborhood was very quiet during the night. It was just the kind of place we were looking for.

    Oriana2019-12-24T00:00:00Z
  • Matthew is very considerate, quiet, and cleanly. The space is wonderful for someone needing a place to sleep while visiting family or while on business. We'll likely stay again!

  • The place was just as described, and it was easy to communicate with Abbie. Would highly recommend for a quiet lakeside getaway. Amazing hospitality.

    Chris2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • This place is absolutely perfect for a little weekend getaway. The view is beautiful, even when frozen over, and the inside is great for grilled cheese and movies. The studio was clean and plenty warm, and the distance from downtown Onalaska and La Crosse was more than reasonable. The host was amazing. She kept in quick communication and lent us extra courtesies when the weather was uncooperative. This is a great place to stay!

    Sophie2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • I needed a last minute place to stay especially after a long day of work and having to drive through a small snowstorm! • Another great stay in the books! I brought my teenagers up to ice fish and the lake did NOT disappoint! Abbie’s studio apartment was the perfect place for us to crash! Super cute little space - with everything we needed for the weekend! The bed was SUPER comfy and the view from the front screened in porch was amazing. We will be back!!

  • Abbie’s place is so cozy and it has everything two people could need. Nice touches to make the place feel very comfortable. Comfy couches, comfy bed, well stocked full kitchen and beautiful view. We loved this place. It is a short drive to La Cross (about 10-15 minutes) and in a nice and quiet neighborhood on the lake. We would definitely stay again. Abbie is a great communicator, so it was easy to find and figure out.

  • My wife and I stayed here for a long weekend. We enjoyed the location -- incredible views overlooking the Mississippi and very convenient to driving to La Crosse, over the river to Minnesota, etc. Everything came as advertised with the cabin, including sweet touches like home-made cookies and chocolates waiting for us in the room. We did find a bit of dust in various spaces throughout the cabin, however, plus a leaky kitchen faucet. The bathroom, while tidy and functional, is also pretty small. It was fine for just the two of us, but as we looked at the second bedroom with twin beds, we had a hard time imagining staying here with children comfortably. The hosts were very prompt communicators, with plenty of information in the guest book about places to go and things to see in the area.

    Tim2020-02-17T00:00:00Z
  • The cabin was wonderful! We have stayed in one of the cabins for three years in a row and will continue to come back. It's a great location, the space is perfect, and the hosts are wonderful to communicate with. We would highly recommend a stay here if you are looking for something in the area (especially for those who like to ice fish).

  • Perfect little get away cabin!

    Sherri2019-12-19T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin was absolutely adorable and very clean. There was even a binder with local tips and places to go. It was basically right on the water as well! Enough parking for 2-3 cars, a great back porch area, comfy and clean bed. A Large TV with an amazon fire stick to watch all the shows you need. We enjoyed our stay very much! 10/10 would stay again

    Carter2019-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • Fun place.

    Omar2019-12-08T00:00:00Z
  • My friends and I had an absolutely lovely time here. Abbie made the check-in process and check-out process so easy, and she was very responsive to all our questions. She was very accommodating with our timing. The cabin is just like in the pictures. We had a great time hanging out, singing, playing board games, watching a movie (we rented a DVD from the Family Video not far away, in 2019 no less). We also hiked the bluffs and enjoyed some coffeeshops near by. It was a very nice weekend.

    Julia2019-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • My daughter and I enjoy our stay very much. The cabin was comfortable and cozy. We enjoyed all the trails nearby. Such a nice location.

WINTER SPECIAL! This is a very cozy, private cottage located in the driftless area on the upper Mississippi River in Dresbach MN. This cottage has everything needed for a relaxing girls weekend, fishing excursion, or romantic get away for two! The cottage is less than a 10 minute drive to the historic downtown LaCrosse, WI where there is an abundance of fine dining, shopping and entertainment. Great River Bluff’s State Park and historic highway 61 Bike trail just minutes away as well.
  • This spot has a beautiful view. It's only a short 14 minute drive from historic downtown LaCrosse. You get the best of both worlds. We were able to check in a bit early which was helpful. Check this place out!

The room is your typical guest room with two bedside tables. We recently painted and decorated to eventually turn the room into our nursery so it has a "baby" feel to it-but the bed is all queen. We are typically very busy people so our house will sometimes reflect that but we always take time to make sure the room and bathroom are warm, clean and inviting.
We have an american bulldog (Bull) who is typically just curious about other furry friends, cats not so much and non-neutered males should be avoided. Bull knows basic commands (sit, stay, "no") he will be your best friend or takes kindly to just being politely ignored-it's up to you. We have also recently added another puppy to our home, Zoey. She is a 1 year old Labradoodle, she is very timid and will more than likely keep her distance. We are more than willing to pet sit if you want time to explore alone.
It's just over the hill from our "Wal-Mart/Target" town. It's a smaller town with great restaurants and "haunts" while being less than five minutes from our mall area with plenty of chain restaurants and about 20 minutes from downtown La Crosse
  • Room was as described, a cozy place in a quiet neighborhood. I was greeted at the door by Abby, Bull, and Luna and made very welcome. Great place, affordable, and close to La Crosse amenities.

    Hawthorn2020-02-29T00:00:00Z
  • Abby is a great host with great style. She went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable. When we experienced some unexpected illness, Abby allowed us to stay for several extra hours to rest up before the trip home. I would highly recommend a stay here, and would stay again myself.

    Lori2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • I loved my stay with Abby and Keith. They were so welcoming, and their welcoming committee of the dogs Bull and Zoey were absolutely amazing. The dogs kept to themselves unless you wanted them around. Bull is a giant horse of a dog, but totally sweet. As far as the space, it's everything you need. A private bathroom, a comfortable bed, and absolutely clean. I was able to come and go as I pleased, and Keith was wonderful giving me a ride to the speedway. In normal circumstances, it's an easy walk as well. I truly enjoyed my stay and hope to come back a couple times during next years race season!

  • A perfect place for a weekend getaway. Kathy’s place is extremely relaxing and the indoor hot tub makes it even better. We weren’t able to arrive till after dark and Kathy was extremely accommodating and made check in a breeze. Definitely looking forward to staying here again if we are in the area!

    Jake2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • So many personal touches. Kathy has gone the extra mile on making the space feel like a cabin getaway! Very clean and fantastic communication. I’ll be back for sure!!!

  • Kathy's place is a fantastic getaway for those seeking a comfortable home away from home while visiting Onalaska, WI. A friend and I had planned to take a fishing trip to another area in WI and the night before we were to leave plans fell through at the place we were supposed to stay. We were all packed up, ready to go and even had permission from the wife! The next morning we started searching for alternatives and found Kathy's place on Airbnb. What a great find it was!!! Kathy was super responsive in her replies and very accommodating with our same day scheduling. Upon arriving we were warmly welcomed, given a quick tour and then left to unpack. There are so many thoughtful touches throughout the place that we never lacked for a convenience from home. The cookies were delicious;) It is very spacious, tucked away yet convenient to all the Mississippi River area has to offer...especially the fishing! The bait shop was a perfect place to load up on supplies and get tips on fishing reports before heading out for the day. The Hot Tub was a really awesome treat to relax in after a long day fishing. Stop looking and just book here you won't regret it!!!

    Tony2020-02-08T00:00:00Z
  • This cabin is so perfect. We’re driving cross country and was a perfect spot to stop. Complete with an inside hot tub, candy in a basket, pizzas in the freezer if you want to just stay in and electric fireplace, it’s a great home on our way to our new home. We said we were going to stop early here to watch football and she wasn’t sure if she’d get it, yet we walked in and football was on the TV! What a sweet, thoughtful touch! I love this spot! Also go check out Red Pines. Amazing spot to grab local beers, hang with those from town and eat great food.

Recently renovated half-duplex. Hickory woodwork throughout. A block from unique shopping and dining experiences. You're just a mile from the interstate (I-90), 2 miles from the La Crosse Regional Airport, and only about 2 miles from downtown La Crosse, Western Technical College, UW-La Crosse, Viterbo University, and Mayo and Gunderson Hospitals. The Mississippi and Black Rivers are just a few blocks away where eagles will soon be gathering. Access anytime with the electronic lock.
A very quiet place right on the local bus route. During winter months alternate side parking is enforced in La Crosse which is explained further in the house manual. There is no off-street parking available.
This house is on one corner of an intersection. On the other 3 corners are a church, a church school and the parsonage. During the day, the school blocks off their part of the street for the kids to play in. The streets the house is on are not considered main thoroughfares so they are not that busy. A block away are some unique shops including a sweet shop and a winery.
  • Great space for the two of us! Not far from where we wanted to be.

    Ashley2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at Rob's house was perfect! Check-in was super easy and his communication was great. The house is cute and very comfortable and had everything we needed. We were traveling with our 7-month-old baby and got along really well. We would definitely stay here again!

The instructions made check in and check out so simple. The kitchen was fully equipped with everything you would need to make a meal. I loved the quality of the towels and linens. Rob communicated quickly and thought of every detail to make our stay special.

We love using AirBnB for travel and thought we'd offer our home for travelers to the beautiful Coulee Region. We live in a quiet neighborhood, but within blocks of a major grocery store, city parks, biking and hiking trails. 15 minutes by car will get you to the Onalaska/La Crosse shopping district, UWL, restaurants, museums and even more outdoor opportunities. You are welcome to treat the home like it is your own. We just ask that you respect our belongings and the neighbors.
While there is no private access to your space, we hope you'll feel comfortable walking through the living room or kitchen to access the stairs to your lower level. We're also happy to give you tips and pointers about things to do in the area!
We live in a small, residential neighborhood, blocks from the city pool, parks and ball fields, trails, grocery store, library and schools. WIthin 15-20 minutes to University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, as well as Western Technical College and Viterbo University.

    Renee2019-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa is very hospitable and went out of her way to make us comfortable. We enjoyed coffee on the front porch and a nice walk around the neighborhood. She and her husband were gone and told us to make ourselves at home. She has a lovely home.

  • So clean! The hosts were super friendly and accommodating! I had an awesome stay! Would definitely stay there again.

    Rebecca2019-09-11T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa & Kris are fantastic hosts. Their home is beautiful and centrally located in Holmen. I really appreciated how the couple both went out of their way to ensure I felt welcome and at home while I was staying in their home. If you need a place to stay while in Holmen I’d recommend staying with Lisa and Kris.

    Travis2019-08-24T00:00:00Z
  • This place was perfect for our trip to the area. My wife, our 17 month old daughter and I stayed here for three nights. This place was amazing and Lisa and Kris were both welcoming and nice. They made us feel like we were at home. We had full access to the basement all by ourselves and even cooked multiple meals. Everything we needed was available to us and both were easy to contact if we had any questions. I couldn’t ask for a better place to stay. If we are in the area again we would not hesitate to stay here again. Thanks!

She was always within reach! We were very lucky to get this booked before it was taken. We were not disappointed. The room is as pictured, very clean, roomy, and quiet. Everything you need is there. Kitchen stocked pots/pans, plates, silverware, mugs, glasses.....linens for bath. etc. The restaurant is located right next door, excellent food and service. • Great little cabin! Lots of sleeping spots. Nice pool to take a dip in after hiking. Great location by a nice prairie restoration area with a really cool interpretive center showing preservation efforts on the river. We ate dinner at Red Pine Inn minutes away both nights. Rented kayaks at Schaefer’s next to the restaurant. Signs at Cozy said you need life jackets to use the kayaks and canoe provided so bring some - the inlet was green with duckweed so left from Schaefer’s. Loved the $1 ice cream treats freezer!

The A.C. Carter House is a unique and charming testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of the once wild river city of La Crosse. The personal residence of Civil War veteran, merchant, and patent medicine man Amos Claude Carter and family; it is a delightful study in the detail of whimsy that once was a part of everyday design in Victorian America. For the full history, architectural details and additional photos you may wish to send an inquiry for the historic web site.
A truly unique and authentic Victorian gingerbread house! The ornate structure was restored and nominated to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1986 and photographed for the book Daughters of the Painted Ladies- America's Resplendent Victorians (one of only two homes in La Crosse chosen for that honor). It is listed on the La Crosse historical walking tour. Decorated in delightful Victorian imported wall coverings and friezes chosen to closely match the original designs and colors discovered during the restoration. The interior is furnished with a eclectic fun mix of comfortable and antique furnishings from Empire, to Victorian, to Art Deco, to Atomic Age and featuring rare massive antique 1 st Empire and Victorian bedroom suites by Anthony Quervelle of Philadelphia and Charles Lee of New Orleans. A House Adorned-The History The A.C. Carter House, Circa 1888 is significant for it’s historic connection with the economic and social development of North La Crosse, Wisconsin. It serves history as a prime example of entrepreneurial spirit , alive in La Crosse, an important Mississippi River port of the 19th century. This home is a rare, and excellent example of fine craftsmanship and detail, in the late Gothic Revival style of the Queen Anne Victorian Period of American architecture. Highly ornate, it was one of the most adorned suburban residences of the new North side subdivision at it’s time of construction. It directly reflects still, the tastes and character of it’s original occupant, and builder, Amos Claude Carter. Carter, a Civil War veteran, shot in Richmond, imprisoned in the horrific “Bull Pen” POW camp and present at Gen. Lee's surrender at Appomattox during his service, came to La Crosse in the 1880’s, and worked as a craftsman in many different area’s of construction with only one useful arm. Being of strong spirit, having been marched in “double quick” for nine days while shot through this arm and without rations for three days, he became a leader of men. Amos Carter soon became a builder and independent contractor. An entrepreneur, Amos Carter began yet another business, that of a wholesale grocer and dry goods merchant, and was among those to first build a North side business district in the 1300 block of Caledonia Street. A.C. Carter & Son, provided a good income as well as an outlet for his new venture, Fell’s Patent Medicine. Being very successful in his endeavors, he built himself the home of his dreams, and cherished it till his dying day. After his death, the home eventually passed to his youngest surviving daughter Bessie, whom occupied the home until her death in Feb, 1985. Just two months short of her 101st birthday. The home still stands today, relatively unchanged, as the legacy of the free enterprise, and spirit, that was A.C. Carter. A.C. Carters granddaughter Avis Riley, who grew up in the home, still resided in the smaller home north, until her death in 2007. We forever thank her for her invaluable contributions, and use of photographs in researching it’s history. Additional Carter Family Data Amos Claude Carter, Civil War Veteran, married Lurene Henry, *great granddaughter and direct descendent of Revolutionary War patriot Patrick Henry (“Give me liberty or give me death”) in New York, Aug. 15th 1865 the date was also recorded as Sept. 15th 1865, perhaps a 2nd wedding ceremony. This kinship being subject of an article in a Minnesota newspaper from the 1890's, shown to us by Avis Riley, about the Henry family wedding spoons presented to Amos and Lurene (aka Lorena) by a Patrick Henry descendants society. We do not know the true exact genealogical connection. They bore four children, one, a daughter Mae Bell, died in infancy. Son Claude, and daughters Maude and Bessie survived. First settled in Sparta, Wisconsin before moving to La Crosse. They lived above their dry goods store during much of the four year construction of the A.C. Carter House. The home was purchased in 1985, first restored, and is still currently owned by Dean and Signe Gronbeck-Johnson, owners of Grandeur Restorations of Madison, and it was accepted for Nomination for the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The A.C. Carter House is featured on page 77 of the book “Daughters Of The Painted Ladies, America’s Resplendent Victorians” Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larson authors, Douglas Keister photographer. It is widely considered the 'bible' of Victorian restorationists. One of only two La Crosse homes selected on Ms. Pomada's nationwide tour, the photographer was sent back from San Francisco to capture 2 photos during restoration to be on time for publication. Ms. Pomada described the home as one of the most delightful surprises of her tour. We are truly honored by her recognition of this wonderful home that time seemed to have forgotten.

  • ***PERFECT IN EVERY WAY***. Beautiful touches throughout. I am OBSESSED with this location and host. Easily my favorite Airbnb experience to date. Not only is this *home* beautiful, original and special in so many ways, it is run by the most detail-oriented and thoughtful *host* you can imagine. This woman thinks of everything. All instructions were super clear and smooth. Signe has so much knowledge (and illustrated history) about the house that she clearly has a passion for carrying forward and sharing with her guests. I about lost it (in a good way) when my group walked into perfectly dimmed pre-set lighting throughout the home - complete with a Christmas tree. And so much holiday greenery on the exterior! WELCOME JAZZ MUSIC was also playing ready for our arrival. After a 4-hour drive to get there, it couldn't have been more special. This woman really does think of everything. Prior to our arrival, she even put out an attractive vessel of street salt for us on the front porch because it was snowing. Even the salt bucket vessel was cute, complete with a little metal hand scoop. We also particularly enjoyed various cocktails in the house crystal punch bowl (champagne + rum) and Crock pot (spiked ciders). Also, the city of La Crosse itself proved to be A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT; lots to do! WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE A.C. CARTER HOUSE. Thank you Signe!

    Marcia2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • The historic Carter house is a truly amazing place. I can't recommend it enough if your travels take you to La Crosse. Signe is a very thoughtful and responsive hostess.

  • My brother and I stayed at Bonnie's place overnight on Labor Day weekend. We arrived later in the evening and was pleasantly surprised at how spacious the house was. They have a enclosed (but open) porch off the living room that was really pleasant to sit and enjoy the night air. The whole place was very clean and tidy. The bedrooms were good size and the beds were extremely comfortable. Bonnie has decorated the house with elegant touches. Really liked the feel of the whole house. We left early the next morning. Our stay was short but really enjoyed the time we were there. Left feeling relaxed and refreshed. If I returned to the area again I would definitely contact Bonnie.

  • A group of us came up to La Crosse for a weekend of ice fishing and Lee & Erin's place was the perfect stay. Amenities were very nice! There were 5 of us (2 couples and 5th wheel) and this space worked very well for us. We had everything we needed to cook meals, they provided a spot for us to clean fish, being pet friendly was very convenient for us, and a great restaurant (Red Pines Bar and Grill) was just a short walk away. And it was right on the water we fished. Highly recommend this stay, we'll be back!

Becca's Driftless Manor is close to La Crescent Minnesota and La Crosse Wisconsin. Three miles from La Crescent the drive up our hill provides spectacular views of the Mississippi River Valley. Our place is minutes from: the airport, great dining, family-friendly activities, apple orchards, three college campuses, shopping, river fun in the summer and snow skiing in the winter. You can enjoy the fresh air or cozy up to a warm fire. We can also accommodate those traveling with equines.
Our two story home has five bedrooms rarely used, that we're sharing with visitors. Upstairs there are four rooms that are rented to only one party at a time. Three bedrooms are about 14' x 14' with large windows looking out at beautiful country scenes. The fourth bedroom is smaller and setup for children. There is a crib and bunk beds with a double futon on the bottom. The bathroom is private for guests renting the upper bedrooms. There is also a shared half-bath on the first floor. We live on the first floor but welcome visitors to share the kitchen, two large family rooms both with TVs, one with a large copper-top bar and wine cellar and the other with a large fireplace and piano. Guests are invited to enjoy the entire property. The entire place is also available for large groups, we've accommodated up to 14 at one time - all in their beds with two and one-half baths. Please contact us for availability, number of beds needed and pricing.
Our home is three miles from La Crescent along Apple Blossom Drive (County Road 1). It overlooks the Mississippi River. It is on five acres that are filled with mature trees which provide many private spaces to sit and relax or walk around for fresh air or for a visit to our neighbor's winery: River View Vineyard & Winery. We overlook the Mississippi River so during spring and fall we enjoy watching many migrating flocks of ducks, geese, pelicans, eagles, great herons. Our neighbor has a nesting box for peregrine falcons. The songbirds love our trees and hummingbirds regularly buzz us while sitting outside. The deer are frequent visitors as are a variety of squirrels, rabbits and other critters. Our property is in the heart of the Driftless Region - an area untouched by the glaciers preserving unique topography and wildlife. It is featured in a 26 minute youtube video for those interested in learning more about the "Mysteries of the Driftless". The Mysteries of the Driftless is a documentary about a team of explorers and scientists kayaking down deeply cut tributary valleys, flying in ultralights, and climbing rocky bluffs to reveal answers to the mysteries within the driftless area. Their journey will expose both the science and threats behind three unique features of the zone - rare plants and animals, odd geological phenomenon, and striking remnants of a Native American pilgrimage like no other. What these explorers reveal will not only give the audience a greater appreciation for the unique diversity of this "island of land" that escaped glacial scouring, but will inspire a greater appreciation for this amazing area. The goal is not to answer all the mysteries, but to document the exploratory process for the viewers. In the end, the film will ignite the curiosity of viewers to discover more about the area for themselves.
  • A delightful manor, great views, delicious breakfast, and accommodating hosts. Be aware, they live in their house, and need to use their kitchen etc, but Becca's was upfront when asked about when she needed the kitchen and there was always enough room you didn't feel invasive. The pups are very friendly, and fun, but Becca was very attentive if our guests didn't want them pattering about. Would highly recommend, but just a reminder that this house has live-in hosts, including family at times, but we thought it was the more the merrier and truly enjoyed our stay.

    Pamela2019-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • The Driftless Manor is top notch. Beautiful well kept home. Special property with an unmatched view. The hospitality was also unmatched: helpful, kind, flexible and friendly! I’d recommend this place to anyone looking for a getaway in a beautiful quiet place (with easy access to lacrosse).

  • Becca and Dean are absolutely wonderful hosts and we throughly enjoyed our stay on their beautiful property! They made us feel like family while we were staying there. We loved the delicious breakfast spread that was put out each morning, which included fresh baked turnovers, scones and fresh eggs from their chickens. Their house is located in a beautiful area overlooking the Mississippi with stunning views in both directions. We would love to come back sometime and highly recommend their home if you're visiting the La Crosse/La Crescent area.

  • We stayed at Rebecca's place with our infant child. Though she has a crib, she's in the process of getting a new mattress so that it's safe for infants.

    Samuel2019-10-12T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely weekend staying at Rebecca’s welcoming home. We were visiting our son in La Crosse for Oktoberfest. My husband and I, my sister and our oldest son, his wife and their 3 month old daughter stayed with Rebecca. We used 3 of the upstairs bedrooms. Her home is roomy and comfortable. She made a bonfire for us one night. Breakfast was delicious also! We hope to stay there next time we visit!

    Kay2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • I don’t even know where to start. My wife and I have done Airbnb for about five years now, and this was by far our favorite hosts and location! Everything you see in the pictures is even more beautiful in real life. We were blown away by the hospitality and the comfort we were given in many ways. We felt so at home, and were lovingly welcomed and helped with our one year old baby. Location was perfect for getting to La Crosse and the surrounding orchards, wineries, parks, and wonderful sights as Becca lives up on an outlook over the Mississippi. Make sure you wake up hungry for her breakfast(eggs fresh from her chickens!) and watch out for the best pastries and cookies you’ve ever had! You’ll be blessed just to meet Becca and her husband.

    Walker2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Becca's Driftless Manor is beautiful and comfortable. She and her husband are beautiful souls that make you will feel like one of the family. The conversation is eclectic, from art and music to horses and chickens!! We absolutely recommend Becca's place. You will never want to leave!!

  • Amazing property and equally amazing hospitality! Rebecca and Dean provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made us feel right at home! We arrived to scrumptious cookies and fresh-squeezed lemonade. Their home is beautiful and well appointed making our stay more than comfortable. As you stroll the grounds you can expect to encounter a gaggle of colorful hens led by a confident but cordial rooster, horses and even a couple of adorable dogs. We enjoyed coffee and Rebecca’s fresh peach croissants in the mornings in a gazebo surrounded by a garden with a view from the top of the bluffs making this experience feel like a true getaway!

This is a private hotel style room with a mini fridge, microwave and Keurig available for guests. Our space is located on Lake Onalaska on Brices Prairie rich in natural beauty but close to all the unique offerings of La Crosse - just 15 min away.
In addition to our restaurant, Schafer's River Rentals is just a block away for fishing, boat/kayak/canoe rentals. A visit to the Visitor Center and you can walk the trails through the prairie and out to an overlook. At the overlook you are looking at the Mississippi River. This stretch is called Lake Onalaska you could see bald eagles or waterfowl.

  • We really enjoyed staying here! We spent most of the day out and about and this was the perfect spot to come back to and unwind. Very clean and tidy. We will definitely stay here again if ever in the area for the weekend.

  • Great place to stay. Cute, nice apartment with everything we needed. We rented a pontoon next door from Schafer’s river rentals and ate at Red Pines for a couple meals. Great location for a getaway weekend!

  • I just met Corinna, because of a last minute check in. Corinna didn't realize I had booked a night. When I got to her place she was working in her restaurant next to the Airbnb. She dropped everything, just to accommodate me. While she was preparing my room she offered to by me drink and introduced me to a couple that knew everything about the area. The room was immaculate. Wish I could have stayed another night, just to try out some of the delish meals I seen I her restaurant
