The Smiddy house is located in the village of Bonchester Bridge in the Scottish Borders. There’s a bar/restaurant very close and some lovely walks .Not far from some bicycle trails. Paint balling. Factory tours and distillery. We do have a few weddings in the old Smiddy so if that’s your thing we can help. The Borders have a lot to see and do but at a much slower pace.
“I would definitely recommend this accommodation to anyone wishing to visit the Scottish Borders. It is in a great location to access most Border towns and also has a pub with good food literally facing the property across the road. The house itself is lovely and Jackie the host provided many thoughtful touches that made the stay relaxing and trouble free. I would happily stay there again in the future”
Come and enjoy the peace and tranquility that the countryside has to offer with our offgrid converted horse Lorry. We have created a camping experience with a twist. At the site nests a converted horse lorry that sleeps five and a converted pony trailer that houses all your cooking needs. Theres a separate composting toilet and an outdoor shower with heated water. Theres also the option of cooking on the fire pit or just laze beside the flames under the stars.
“We have just spent a great 3 nights at sunny bedrule with the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 children, 7 and 9). Unfortunately the sun did not shine all the time but it was late October in Scotland so we were prepared with wellies and waterproofs. Despite this we managed 2 camp fires to roast marshmallows which were even complimentary! The facilities are great with a gas bbq in the cooking horse box and a shower with warm water (if you can brave the cold for a short while). The composting toilet was also better than expected but due to the overcast weather the solar light in the loo did run out so we were glad of having our head torches! The beds were comfortable and things were spotlessly clean in the horse box and with the log burner on it was very cosy. We became a dab hand in fire lighting and this meant it didn’t take long in the morning to get warm again after the colder nights. Another review suggested bringing a candle and this was a great suggestion for some light and ambiance when the kids were asleep. There was a solar light in both rooms but they both had to be on at once. We survived being off grid and there is phone signal if you needed it. We enjoyed board games as a family. We managed to book a farm tour which was wonderful and we would highly recommend this. We spent a great hour in the farm buggy seeing the highland cows, deer and other farm animals along with numerous facts and information. The children and adults enjoyed alike and we would go again when we come back. There are great walks from the horse box and in surrounding areas and we very much enjoyed our recommended walk up to the magical wood near by. There are abbeys and points of interest nearby also. We also went to Teviotdale leisure centre in Hawick which had a slide and a good pool and we made the most of the showers too! The local village Denholm has a reasonable pub and we had a lovely Italian meal in another restaurant the village.. The Denholm Meet. They even did takeaway if you had wanted. We had a nice brunch at Born in the Borders which is close by. All in all it was a great few days and we are looking forward to returning.”

“We've just had an excellent stay at The Steadings. Ros is a wonderful host - friendly, welcoming and there when we needed anything. There were lots of thoughtful touches such as fresh eggs and lemon drizzle cake on arrival as well as trip suggestions. The house is beautiful, equipped with everything you need and surrounded by the most glorious countryside. Plenty for a family with 2 small boys to do (they especially loved the trampoline and feeding the chickens) but this place would also be great for a peaceful couples break or an active trip with friends as well. We packed a lot in: Edinburgh zoo, river swimming, Life museum in Newcastle, a boat trip to Lindisfarne and bamburgh castle, a walk up to Fatlips castle, Kielder observatory and more besides. They were all excellent and highly recommended (although we got very lucky with the weather for Lindisfarne!). All in all, an lovely stay and I wouldn't hesitate to suggest booking The Steadings to anyone wanting a holiday in the borders.”
