Top-rated things to do in Penmaenmawr

Unique activities hosted by local experts vetted for quality

  • A trail with tales with a lady of Wales
We meet outside the tourist information centre where I'll supply the receivers that you use to hear the commentary I'll be relaying through my microphone. That means you can socially distance and linger to take a picture and not miss a word. This is a history tour made interesting with plenty of stories for young and old alike led by a lady in traditional Welsh costume - tall black hat and all. We see the outside of all the main attractions in Conwy - the castle, the church, the walls, Plas Mawr, the gateways and of course the smallest house and quayside. All the time you'll hear about the doings of past and present inhabitants - real and ghostly alike. Your guide is a resident of Conwy so you'll get a real insight into what it is like living in the town today as well as in the past. There'll be plenty of time for picture taking and question answering. The tour takes about one and a half hours and is suitable for pushchairs and strollers though there are some rough paths. Other things to note Wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate to the weather. Bring your own earbuds or headphones. You can buy a set for £1 if you forget

  • Walking with Donkeys
When you join us you will be able to see some of our donkeys and we will introduce you to Nutmeg, Norman and their friends. Your ‘donkey time’ experience will start with a formal introduction to the adults leading your session and a glance around the home of our donkeys. We will introduce you to some of our donkeys and give you a glimpse of what makes them special. After formal introductions to the donkeys we will introduce you to the ones that will be accompanying you on your walk. We usually walk with one donkey per 2 people so that you get time to chat with your donkey as well as human companions. Keeping safe around donkeys and our procedures for safe walking with donkeys our outlined before we set off on our walk. Our walk will take us over public footpaths and permissive rights of way around the farm and neighbouring area. We'll walk through broad-leafed woodlands and over grazing land to glimpse some most spectacular views of the local coast and countryside. We'll take our walk at donkey pace so will have have plenty of time for sight seeing and getting close to nature. Our circular walk takes us back to the donkeys main shelter where you can spend some quality time with the donkeys that accompanied you on the walk so there will be plenty of time for photographs and selfies of course!

  • Guided rock Climbing in Snowdonia
We'll meet for quick introductions and briefing over a brew. Then we'll drive together a short distance to the parking area, where we'll get you kitted up with a Harness, Helmet, and climbing Shoes. Then we'll walk to the crag (climbing cliff), this could be anywhere between 5-30 minutes depending on which climb(s) we're aiming to do. The Climbs will be carefully tailored to suit your aims, ability, experience, the weather, and your desires. We'll aim to learn as we climb, instead of standing around for 1/2 the day talking about it, we'll get climbing and I'll teach you the skills as we progress. You can expect to come away having learned lots of new skills regardless of your previous experience, and having had a good day out with lots of climbing done. Other things to note Guests of any age can come, but under 18's must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please monitor your health prior to your course and if displaying any Covid symptoms please cancel your experience. Arrive prepared for physical activity rested and fed!

  • SAORI freestyle weaving for everyone
SAORImôr is one of only 5 registered SAORI studios in the UK and the only one in Wales. I offer this very special opportunity to do this unique craft in one of the most stunning areas of the UK. As a Japanese based craft this activity also offers a link between the mountains and sea of North Wales and the mountains and sea of Japan and a peep into Japanese culture and practice. Weaving is an important part of our Welsh heritage so by taking a short weaving class at SAORImôr you can learn more about how traditional Welsh blankets were made. A SAORI class is easy and fun. The looms are set up and ready for you to weave. Simply choose your colour and texture from the rainbow colour wall, sit at the loom and begin. No rules, no mistakes, just joy! You take your unique piece of weaving home with you. Other things to note I have complied with all recommendations for protection against Covid-19. The studio is wheelchair accessible (unfortunately not the toilet) and I have accessible equipment to enable people of all abilities to weave.

  • Summit Snowdon with a local guide
You'll be guided to the summit of Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest mountain in Wales and the 19th highest in the British Isles, by a genuine local. Throughout the hike I will be there to support and encourage you as we travel at a steady pace to the summit. We'll meet in the village of Llanberis at 08:45, catch the shuttle bus to Pen-y-Pass from where we'll hike up to the summit of Wyddfa (Snowdon) via the old Miner's track, once at the summit you'll be able to rest and enjoy the views. We'll then hike down from the summit to the village of Llanberis, aiming to get back between 3pm and 4pm. The hike to the summit isn't one that I would class as hard but you'll definitely know that you've climbed a mountain and you'll sleep well when you go to bed that evening. I'd encourage guests to book early and remind guests that they can cancel 7 days before the experience and receive a full refund. Also, if the weather is very bad on the day of the experience I will cancel and you'll receive a full refund. Other things to note - I want guests to be able to relax and enjoy their day and let me do all the organising but I do need guests to arrive with the correct clothing and footwear as we will be in a mountain environment.
