Ballytarsna-Hackett Castle is a 15th century tower house, built inside a now-ruined 13th Century castle. It is like a keep, with one major difference. Where a keep is a powerful thick-walled tower, an Irish tower house is a home for the family, that also serves as a keep. When restoring this tower, we have maintained its status as a fortress. We have also have made it warm and comfortable. It is a cozy country home ensconced between castellated battlements, authentic and usable! Warm and dry!
“This was the highlight of our trip! We arrived just after dark and the hosts greeted us with scones and tea and great conversation. They told us the history of the castle and the area and gave us a very thorough tour of the castle and the restorations. There was a very comfy living room with plenty of books and tv and even a complimentary bottle of wine. Then there was a large bedroom with two double beds and a big bedroom at the top of the tower. The views were incredible and the space itself was beautifully restored and it was so special to be able to stay in such an interesting place. They gave us a suggestion for dinner which we tried and loved. I thought it was conveniently located. We drove that day from Dublin and spent much of the day in Kilkenny and then it was only a short drive to the castle from there. It’s only 10 minutes from the rock of cashel and then another 20 minutes to Cahir castle. Don’t hesitate to book this. You won’t regret it. The only drawbacks I can think of would be the stairs if you have a disability. However I am a very out of shape person and it really wasn’t much trouble and certainly worth the experience and the views. Another thing to note is there are two bathrooms and one tub and no shower. All in all a wonderful experience I would recommend to anyone!”

“Pop's dreams was such a lovely relaxing place to stay. If you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle of Dublin well here is a great place to stay. Barry was a lovely host and didnt come near us but was there if we needed him. Everyone in the area knew Barry and his place on the lake. We went horse riding which was about 15 min drive from Barrys place, called An Sibin Riding, who were also such lovely people. We then went to Killaloe and did the Killaloe cruise which was also lovely and run by such lovely people. A very enjoyable trip all round and would definitely recommend Pop's dream in Whitegate.”

“We had a fantastic four night stay in Cristin’s beautiful and comfortable lodge. The grounds are simply stunning, any hotel resort would be envious of the beautiful woodlands. Our daughter especially loved the swings! Cristin left out breakfast supplies for us, such as yummy brown bread, muesli, milk & juice, which were a lovely surprise! We could not have felt more relaxed after lighting the wood burning stove & running a bubble bath in one of two beautiful baths! Cristin responded extremely quickly to any queries we had and was a wonderful host. We’d love to visit again!”
