Gorgeous cosy flat in a quiet peaceful neighbourhood. Only moved in 9 months ago so everything is modern and freshly decorated. You will have the whole flat and all the amenities to yourself. There are also double and single blow up beds available if required. I will be staying close by during your stay to help with any enquiries; if I'm not available one of my family will be. Close to M74. 5 min drive to Biggar, 15 to Lanark and New Lanark, 40 to Peebles, 1 hour to both Glasgow and Edinburgh.
You will have the whole flat to yourself.
Symington is a lovely quiet little village nestled in the Scottish countryside. There is a good swing park a few minutes walk from my flat. There is also a well-stocked convenience store and post office about 10 minutes walk away. There are 2 gorgeous country hotels within a few minutes drive which serve lovely meals - Tinto Hotel and award-winning Cornhill Castle. For those who love the outdoors Tinto hill walking trail is just a few minutes drive away and can be seen from my living room window! The river Clyde is also close by.
  • Its a lovely clean, quiet space. You wont be disappointed!

  • We felt very at home at Jacqueline’s flat. It was exceptionally clean and comfortable, had everything you need for a stay away from home in a very quiet location and we would highly recommend it. Thanks Jacky.

    Eileen2020-02-18T00:00:00Z
  • I had Jacquelines home to myself, it was like staying ‘home from home’ thank you.

  • We had a wonderful one night stay here for a friends wedding at nearby Cornhill Castle. Jacqueline and her daughter welcomed us to the property and showed us how everything worked. Little touches like milk and eggs made a huge difference to how welcome we felt. It was so clear how much pride she takes in her property as it was immaculately clean and so well presented, with very stylish and well thought-out decor. Can't recommend highly enough!

    Iona2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Very clean, roomy and tidy flat, everything you need. A much loved space....even views at the back of the house towards Tinto Hill. Quiet area.

  • Have just finished a week long stay at Jacqueline's beautiful apartment. A lovely place set in teh borders countryside but still and easy drive to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Apartment was spotlessly clean, Jacqueline was quick to respond to the queries we had and went out of her way to ensure we could extend our stay without difficulty when it was required. All in very happy with everything and will gladly recommend to others.

A renovated wooden horse stable with mezzanine bed up a ladder, wood-burning stove (pots/pans/utensils etc provided), kitchen sink with fresh drinking water and DIY outdoor (hot!) camping shower. This is simple, rustic living for those who want to be closer to nature, surrounded by trees and birdsong. The site is not completely free of road noise (see satellite image) but with a light wind through leafy trees it's certainly well masked. Winter visitors be sure to bring appropriate day/night wear.
Biggar is a historic market town, Coulter has great walks and an excellent old pub - The Mill Inn. The woodland around the bothy has many species of birds including sparrowhawks and firecrest wrens, the occasional fox and regular visits from deer.
  • Our 2nd visit as we loved it so much.

    Laura2020-02-23T00:00:00Z
  • Amazing stay. Feel cleansed of modern day stresses. A lovely off grid reset.

    Shane2020-02-19T00:00:00Z
  • The bothy is lovely, lots of nice touches and very cosy! Thank you Merlin!

    Katie2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • We stayed in the bothy in the February snow. Despite this, once the log burner was going it was toasty warm inside and we had a fabulous, relaxing stay.

    Chris2020-02-12T00:00:00Z
  • The Bothy is a beautiful, quiet place to get away and relax! Even in February, with the stove it’s warm in the evenings ! The hosts were welcoming and had prepared instructions and handy tips for every event making the stay very easy. The location is ideal for walking and exploring ! Will definitely be returning :)

    Amy2020-02-09T00:00:00Z
  • My experience at the Bothy was truly a wonderful. Beautifully situated in woods surrounded by the sounds of nature. It was a perfect time to switch off. Merlin et al made for the perfect hosts - warm, informative and responsive. I especially enjoyed the outdoor shower (exhilarating!!), burning the log fire, and the morning birds! I will certainly be returning, and highly recommend this experience!

    Kerrie2020-02-07T00:00:00Z
  • Second visit to the bothy and it was just as relaxing as the first visit. It’s a perfect environment to switch off and forget the rest of the world. Especially useful on Friday 31st Jan @11pm.... 🙃 the space was perfect and it’s something I recommend everyone visit. I convinced my partner to use the outside shower and she loved it. Success!

    Blair2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • We've stayed numerous times at the bothy and definitely prefer the winter, outdoor shower is so refreshing, trust us and dive in. Everything you need is provided for a relaxing weekend full of tranquility and washing the working week away.

Quiet cosy retreat set in an idyllic location with stunning views. Ideal for walking, cycling, bird watching or simply to get away from it all. We are only 20 minutes drive from M74 junction 13 so ideal as a stop over on the way to the Highlands. A much nicer option than a hotel, having a flat and facilities rather than just a room. Sorry no pets allowed. Please note there is no mobile phone signal or WIFI at the property.
Within walking distance of Coulter Fell and Tinto hill is 15 minutes drive. We are only 7 miles from the historic market town of Biggar with many restaurants, cafes, pubs and independent shops. Edinburgh is within easy reach, 40 minutes drive.
  • No matter how nice this place looks on photo’s they don’t do it justice, the scenery is amazing and paul was an excellent host. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to visit again. The flat was very tidy and had everything we needed for our short stay.

    Christopher2020-03-08T00:00:00Z
  • Fantastic stay at Paul’s place! Only stayed for a night but it was well worth it. The views were incredible and the apartment was spotless. Great hospitality, will definitely be stopping by again some time!

    Patrick2020-02-27T00:00:00Z
  • Great location and beautiful view! Stopped here for 1 night, but definitely would have stayed longer if we could. The apartment is cosy and clean. Paul is a great host, and he made sure the apartment was nice and warm when we arrived. Really recommend this one!

    Malissa2020-02-21T00:00:00Z
  • A cozy place with great location in a beautiful valley near a water reserve that add an extra touch to the beauty of the surrounding Mother Nature. If you enjoy hiking, watching the stars and moon at night, observing the sunrise and set this place is for you away from the loud city life and the internet. Paul was a great host made our stay easy and fun.

    Waleed2019-11-19T00:00:00Z
  • Peaceful location and stunning views. We only stopped one night on our way to the Highlands but we wish we could have stayed longer.

    Chris2019-11-16T00:00:00Z
  • It is an amazing place with stunning views on the hills. Paul was very quick in his reponses and we found the place easily thanks to his detailed directions in his email. The place was clean and Paul himself welcomed us and showed us everything in the flat. It is a quiet and peaceful place.

    Jessica2019-10-27T00:00:00Z

  • A lovely little retreat - perfect for couples who are looking for peace and quiet! Definitely will be staying here again 👍

    Maxim2020-02-02T00:00:00Z
  • Gorgeous wee hut, cosy and clean. We used it as a crash pad for a nearby wedding, but you could imagine a few nights here being a complete tonic for life's stresses. Great hosts too. Can't fault it.

    Frances2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely stay at the gardeners hut. Very cosy in a beautiful landscape. Merlin was a great host. Replied very quickly and had some good recommondations of what to do in the neighbourhood.

    Floor2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Lovely and well set up.

    Kay2020-01-01T00:00:00Z
  • My boyfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights and loved every minute of it! The fire kept us super toasty, and never once felt cold, despite it being freezing outside. The interior of the hut and outdoor shower room are unique and really lovely and was way beyond our expectations! Upon arrival, Merlin filled us in on the area and we enjoyed the great suggestions for dinner. Definitely want to visit again!

    Stephanie2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely loved our stay in the Shepherd’s Hut. A cosy and comfortable space which was thoughtfully equipped and finished to a lovely standard. The shower and stove were hot and kept us warm despite snowy December weather. Merlin was close to hand and was kind and helpful when we needed some extra kindling and even left us a Christmas wreath on the door. We most enjoyed our wintery hill walk at Coulter Fell and the local fish and chip shop. Will be recommending to friends and family and planning our return trip in spring!

    Kate2019-12-16T00:00:00Z
  • I really enjoyed my stay in the shepherd’s hut and wish I could have stayed for longer than one night. I was worried it might be a bit cold in the middle of December but the little wood burning stove kept it toasty warm. Would gladly stay again.

  • Helen’s place was such a great wee stay! The coal fire was a great touch for that home-y feel! Definitely recommend!

    Cameron2020-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • Very cosy bothy with everything one could ask for to have a comfy stay. We loved having the stove on during the cool December night. Helen is a very friendly host and we hope to be back one day.

    Sarah2019-12-31T00:00:00Z
  • I’ve traveled around quite a bit and used AirBnB in many different countries, and always seems that the breakfast part of the “B&B” has been lost or simply ignored. That is definitely not the case with Helen’s place. Not only do you get wonderfully comfortable accommodations you also get a full breakfast (when you stay in the house room)!!! A consummate host!! Well done!!!

    Matthew2019-10-27T00:00:00Z
  • Super place! The Bothy is so cute and a great stopping point for seeing Edinburgh, Glasgow and other local spots. New Lanark heritage site and the Grey mares tail are must! Fab hosts who provided advise on places to go and the Bothy was a really home away from home. Be cautious if you have a dog as the staircase is a tad risky, we brought along a retractable stair gate and this would be a great recommendation to avoid any worries if you do have to pop out and leave the dog behind! All in all, we couldn’t fault the Bothy, it was warm, cosy and the perfect size for 2 + pooch!

    Emma2019-10-16T00:00:00Z

  • very informative host, lovely and clean cottage in a lovely part of the country. highly recommend firefly cottage.

  • A sweet cottage that is clean and comfortable. We used it for a stop off when travelling because it is fairly convenient for the motorway. It's a small village with places to walk the dog and Linda provides information about the area, which is useful if you're staying longer. Linda is a lovely host and very hospitable.

    Susan2019-11-17T00:00:00Z
  • We had a lovely time at Linda's. We were visiting family in the village so we knew what to expect from Leadhillls but Linda has a little book that gives you info about the local area and things to do as well as lots of small touches around the property to make your stay easy and enjoyable. I'm sure we'll be back again!

  • Lovely cottage and hospitality. Highly recommended especially if you have dogs and love walking.

    Jane2019-10-24T00:00:00Z
  • My partner & I enjoyed an overnight at Linda’s Cottage. Within half an hour we wished we had booked for a longer stay, as it was so so cosy & had everything ( & I mean everything ) you would need & more, but more importantly Linda made us feel at home right away with a warm welcome. We have never had a host that was so accommodating by providing not only provisions for us, but also for our Labrador. So many little extra touches were much appreciated. The views were amazing too, & even in October we took advantage of sitting out in the enclosed patio enjoying a glass of wine. We enjoyed a lovely walk into Wanlochead & indeed to the Wanlochead Inn, where we were made to feel so welcome & enjoyed a nice lunch & good banter. I would recommend Linda’s cottage as it had everything you would need, from Toiletries to Wifi, Netflix, & Breakfast, but more importantly peace & quiet with the most comfortable bed. Harry, John ( & Tyra )

Mid Row Cottage is in a quiet, historic village in the Southern Uplands, only 6 miles from the M74, 8 from A76. Originally 2 tiny miners' cottages, your accommodation is 'next door', up your own quaint steep, narrow stairs. The ground floor is: shared entrance, lounge, main bathroom and kitchen/diner. There are gardens, plenty of parking and miles of glorious walking. Village has a shop and a pub (good food!). Wi-fi is fibre-optic. Museum of Lead Mining with Tea Room is just a mile away.
Mid Row Cottage is best suited to singles or couples for stop-over, leisure or weekly commuting (fibre-optic wi-fi plus you can leave things over the weekend), or for exploring the beauty and amazing social history of the Southern Uplands of Scotland and/or Glasgow/Edinburgh and surrounds, while returning to the peace and tranquillity of this small, accessible village, with its fabulous walks and views and good pub grub. In summer there's a golf course, in winter snow there's skiing.
Conservation previous mining village - most roads are made up, some are still rough. There is a heritage railway runs in the summer and a museum to the social and industrial history of the area is situated in a nearby village. We are surrounded by glorious moorland with magnificent views, which is open to walkers. Close to M74 and A76 so southern Scotland, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, is very accessible.
  • Jen is an absolute awesome host and has a beautiful place. She told us a lot of fascinating things about the history of the area and directed us to great places. If we ever return to Scotland, we will be sure to incorporate a stay with Jen if possible!

    Fabian2019-09-06T00:00:00Z
  • Jen was a fantastic host to me, she really did go above and beyond when it came to looking after me while I was staying! Super clean, super comfortable... couldn’t really ask for anything else. Also a little corner of the world that i’ll Definitely be back too, stunning location

    Simon2019-08-28T00:00:00Z
  • Jen’s place is absolutely lovely! The attic room is nice and cosy with a very comfy bed and we were very impressed with the facilities, cleanliness and location. The house is only a few minutes’ drive from the motorway but the village feels pleasingly remote and peaceful. Jen is a lovely lady and a welcoming host who is very friendly and informative about the local area; we had some very interesting and entertaining conversations over cups of tea/breakfast and came away having learned a great deal about the fascinating history of Leadhills! Her dog, Poacher is brilliant and a big softie! It was a pleasure to stay at Jen’s place and we’d certainly recommend it highly.

  • Another very pleasant stay at Jen’s lovely cottage. Jen is an excellent host and her love of Leadhills and the surrounding area is reflected in the wealth of knowledge she has gained over the years and her willingness to share this with guests. Very quiet location and everything you need is to hand.

  • What a lovely wee cottage, in a beautiful setting. It's really cosy and we enjoyed tending to the log fire. We only stayed a couple of nights but would definitely like to see more of the area - we went for a couple of lovely walks in the hills and our favourite was west along the Southern Uplands Way from Wanlockhead. Stunning scenery. Pauline is an excellent host. You won't be disappointed!

Make sure you take advantage of all that the surrounding area has to offer. Paiuline, the owner, is quick to respond should you have any questions. Again. I highly recommend this property and will be returning here for another stay!!

  • Best weekend ever. Brought four friends here with me for my birthday weekend and we absolutely loved it. It was so quiet and peaceful and exactly what we all needed. Fantastic views, comfy beds and so warm! Our Tip: go outside at night. The stars here are absolutely phenomenal. Thank you so so much! Was simply perfect.

  • After having a hectic time over Christmas with work we booked very last minute and were over the moon that someone could accommodate our booking starting on New Years Day. We arrived to a warm cozy cottage with a bottle of wine to enjoy courtesy of our hosts. The space was amazing, the location is within an hour to everywhere really we wanted to visit - Falkirk, Glasgow, Lanark etc and we found the local tips provided very helpful. We wouldn’t hesitate to book again. Thank you for a wonderful stay

    Claire2020-01-05T00:00:00Z
  • Very spacious, warm and cozy barn conversion in the rolling South Lanarkshire hills. About 45 mins from Glasgow, 70 mins from Edinburgh and 30 mins from New Lanark/Falls of Clyde and Biggar. Photos do not really convey the size of the rooms, thickness of the walls and the comforts on offer. Kitchen well specced for self catering, seating for 7 in lounge, 3 double bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Very comfortable base to enjoy the region.

  • Fab cottage, amazing break away. Everyone loved it. Thanks again

  • We have just spent a wonderful week here with four children. The cottage was amazing and very comfortable. You do need to be willing to drive for days out but we had a great time and the location is stunning . We all loved the outdoor swimming pool in New Crumnock, M and D’s theme park, Head Farm at Ayr, followed by the beach. The weather did nothing to dampen our spirits ... we all had a great time.

  • Very good

    Benjamin2020-03-06T00:00:00Z
  • We were a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 children aged 5 and 2. The cottage was incredibly spacious and was furnished to a high standard. It had everything we needed and the kids loved the space. The cottage is remote which was great-nearest supermarket is probably around 15 miles away. Location wise it's not too far away from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Had a great day out at the Falls of the Clyde which is about 40mins away in New Lanark. All in all we had a great stay and would highly recommend the cottage-fantastic value for money. We're sure to be back.

  • Even better than it looks in pictures. Showers are tricky to use correctly, and the location might be better for those who want isolation rather than a good base. Incredibly comfortable, warm and clean.

Contact throughout was exceptional with a lot of useful information sent. Very easy access using a key box and a delightful gift of wine and shortbread on arrival. We would not hesitate to return and will be recommending to friends and family.

A detached , quiet cosy retreat, located in its own grounds just outside the village of Leadhills with its nearest neighbours over 300m away (excluding the two adjacent derelict properties awaiting renovation) yet within a short walk of the local shop and pub. This cottage has been lovingly renovated over the last 5 years to a high standard, including a games room with pool table, darts & jukebox , as well as a fully fitted kitchen .Close to the Lowther Hills and surrounded by open fells
  • This cottage is simply beautiful. My husband ,daughter & boyfriend spent New Year here & loved it all .Games room was kept a surpise & went down a treat. Sparkling clean & comfortable - we hope to come back.

  • An address to recommend! The house is superbly renovated and very well equipped. If you are looking for calm this is where you will have to go. The small village next door is very pretty and the people very hospitable! The free access to the golf course is less than 100 meters (the material is provided) was a great experience.

We went walking and cycling in the surrounding hills, and even made it to the local hotel for a hearty meal. Loved our stay and will definitely be back.

Please advise time of arrival if possible, thank you. Glencaple Manse has been fully renovated in the last two years in a contemporary style so is light and a good sense of space
You will be surprised by the amount of space there is once you come through the front door. As an ex Ministers home all the rooms are generous and the 19x18 foot lounge has lovely views of the Scottish hills. A large bathroom with both shower and bath, good size bedrooms with ample space to hang clothes.
Crawford is a quiet rural village in South Lanarkshire with the river Clyde running through it. There are some nice walks you can do from the property. It is mainly residential properties and the only eating place is a truckers cafe a 15 minute walk from my home which is why I offer a home cooked 3-course evening meal with fresh vegetables as a change to fast food.
  • A great stopover on LEJOG. A W arm welcome and Sandy was happy to help dry our clothes and feed some hungry cyclists. Would recommend to others on LEJOG. Thank you

    Mark2019-09-03T00:00:00Z
  • Sandy was a delightful and interesting host. She greeted us at the door, helped us store our bicycles securely in her garage, introduced her two charming dogs, showed us around the house, and then left us to settle in and take showers. She then welcomed us to her conservatory, where she shared her love of birds, stories of her life, hot tea, and homemade ginger muffins. Next she and the dogs took us on a lovely walk through the sheep fields, over the River Clyde, and around the old castle ruins. We followed up with a delicious home-cooked dinner, a restful night's sleep, and then a lovely breakfast. What an unexpected and much appreciated experience!

  • Staying with Sandy was a home from home experience. So very grateful that my daughter and I were welcomed and accommodated so well. Sandy was kind enough to take us on a relaxing scenic walk and pointed out lots of sights and info on the area and wildlife. We were VERY well fed and had a great nights sleep. Would recommend to anyone! Thank you.

    Elizabeth2019-07-23T00:00:00Z
  • Sandy is a great host in a clean and comfortable home. For those cycling through, there's a garage for your bike, bath to sooth aching muscles and a substantial meal on offer if you need it. She has a couple of dogs but they're silent and kept away from the areas you'll be in. Highly recommended.

Dipper Cottage is situated at the foot of Tinto Hill (hill of fire) near Loch Lyoch which is popular with hill walkers, ramblers and fishermen. Dipper cottage is set in a very quite relaxing location, ideal for hill walking, climbing, parascending and fishing on our own private trout fishery. We are approx 10 min drive to the market towns of Lanark and Biggar. Our location gives easy access to the Beautiful Scottish borders yet only 45mins drive to Glasgow or Edinburgh.
  • The cottages are remote being at the end of a private road, but the scenery is fantastic and the sense of calm and peace is lovely. We found our cottage very homely and it allowed us freedom on our trip as well as feeling more relaxed after a 7 hour drive. We had everything we needed and would happily stay there again if we were in the area.

    Christine2020-01-19T00:00:00Z
  • The stay is a little far from the city, if you do not go with a rented car the truth is that I do not recommend it, but the landscape, the hospitality and the rest are wonderful. Nothing to object, would return without hesitation.

    Lucas2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • I booked Munro’s cottage for my grandparents who were visiting relatives in Biggar. We were provided with accurate directions which helped them to find the place without any hassle. Munro’s mum was very nice to them and was available in case they needed help with anything and the cottage was very clean and in a lovely location. Thank you for a great stay!

    Hannah2019-10-21T00:00:00Z
  • Arrived later in the evening than planned but still received a lovely welcome from Munro's mum who lives on site. Amazing peaceful location and only a 10-15 minute drive from Lanark. Anyone staying at the cottage can get a pass for £10 to fish at the owners trout fishery. The cottage warms up very quickly with the heating on so I imagine it would still be suitable even in the winter months.

    Lewis2019-09-29T00:00:00Z
  • We booked Dipper Cottage as accommodation whilst we were working in the area over a weekend. The cottage is in a lovely quiet location and everything was very clean. There are plenty of pots & pans, crockery and utensils in the kitchen. There is no private garden but there is a nice wooden seating set on the front decking overlooking the main cottage garden. At night, we had a great view of the stars and we loved watching the bats swooping overhead. Gwen was very helpful when we needed something to treat a minor burn and we had some lovely chats!

    Bev2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Such a lovely welcome and place to stay in a beautiful location of Scotland. Really enjoyed our stay

    Amy2019-08-27T00:00:00Z

  • We were looking for a place which was accessible (we have a wheelchair user in our group) and yet uniquely Scottish and it was both! It also had a big plus of being a lovely 40 min drive from Edinburgh, and 20 min from Biggar, where we found a picturesque downtown with great country pubs, shops and amazing Indian food/:) Our host was lovely supplying us with tea and great tips and going an extra mile when lightening blitzed TV! While this was a quick 2 day trip for us I would love to come back for a walking holiday.

In a true 'Get away' location, you can while away the day watching the wildlife on the surrounding hills; The cottage has wonderful views in a true "get away" from it all location on a working hill farm. Fishing is available for brown trout on the farm, go on catch your breakfast or supper! The picturesque Clyde and Nith are close by offering opportunities to take a day's salmon fishing. • This was a great stopover on the way to the Highlands. Leadhills has interesting history although it is remote so bring what you need, local shops are a drive away. Cottage is small but very clean and kitchen well stocked. Dog walking on the moors nearby. It was very warm and cozy despite cold weather.

The cottage is a cosy mining cottage, with a gorgeous wood burning stove, comfortable beds - including an exciting high bed for the under 11s! - and beautiful views across the valley to the hills (and ski slope) beyond. The cottage is fully equipped for up to six people and offers a homely, stylish space for relaxing after a brisk walk in the hills, and along the Southern Uplands Way, or after a day out in Glasgow (under an hour away) or the sunny beaches on the Solway Firth (90 minutes).
Nestled in the Lowther Hills, the cottage offers everything you could need for both short and long breaks. A cosy living room is equipped with books, games, dvds and tv, with Netflix and free view. The kitchen dining room provides everything you need for making simple - or elaborate - meals, and has a dishwasher (because no one wants to wash up on holiday!), electric hob and fan oven, and a washing machine with a tumble drier in the cupboard, along with a fridge and small freezer. Downstairs, the bedroom contains a high bed for a child, and a sofa bed for grown ups if needed. Upstairs, a mezzanine landing has a comfy single bed with guest bed under, which can be configured as two singles or one huge super king bed. The main bedroom has a super king bed, desk and comfy chair for reading in the evenings. Outside, an unfenced garden to the front of the cottage across the road provides views down to the stream and on to the hills beyond. It’s also an excellent spot for sledging when the weather turns!
The local area is renowned for its gold mining history, with the Leadmining Museum just a very short walk from the cottage, where you can take a trip down into one of the original mines during the summer season. Wanlockhead, which is purported to be Scotland’s highest village, is home to Scotland’s highest pub too, the Wanlockhead Inn, just a short stroll down the hill. The Southern Uplands Way winds its way through the village, following the stream and slightly further afield, the Mennock Pass offers breathtaking scenery and the chance to pan for gold in the icy water (and swim in the swim hole if you’re brave enough!). Wanlockhead has a cool climate and snow is a big feature of winter.A community led ski slope provides tow lifts above the village, with nursery slope provision in neighbouring Leadhills. Further afield, Dumfries and Galloway is home to a dark park where you can gaze at the stars (they’re pretty impressive from the cottage on a clear night too), and is home to lots of historical sites, castles and places of interest, including the newly opened Moat Brae house, childhood home of J.M. Barrie, and now Scotland’s national storytelling centre. Glasgow is a short drive away and, as befits the city of culture, offers fantastic places to visit, shopping and eating out. And if you fancy a longer drive, Edinburgh is less than an hour and a half by road. Heading south through Dumfries and Galloway you’ll find the coast line of the Solway Firth - a favourite place for us all year round, and if you want to explore around that area, you’ll find plentiful small beaches and Wigtown, Scotland’s book town with its famous bookshops and annual book festival. Wanlockhead is a fantastic place to explore in its own right, and the gateway to so many places in southern Scotland and we love it there.

Before booking please give an idea of arrival, thanks.
  • Sandy's place is fantastic and we had a great stay there. She communicated really promptly, and was very helpful with directions, local info and bird identification tips. We opted to eat too and were not disappointed! Lots of delicious and nourishing food which we massively appreciated at the end of a long day. The room was spotless and the shower excellent.

    Its a family home
very peaceful in the heart of the countryside
  • I stayed here for a wedding. The bedroom is big and comfortable, super cosy bed, spacious bathroom with an amazing shower! Breakfast was excellent. Definitely need a car for this spot. Close to Biggar but not walkable on the roads.

  • An amazing place to stay -- wonderful location in great countryside, with Biggar nearby. The house is exceptionally comfortable and absolutely lovely; Caroline is as warm and welcoming as one could possibly wish. She made everything so easy for us. Highly recommended in every way!

    Sally2019-09-24T00:00:00Z
  • Braefield has a beautiful spacious room with a separate bathroom / shower. Very quiet and located 1 1/2 miles from Biggar. Caroline provides a nice breakfast with nice little details such as a card that says what's on the table. And the hallway a whole table full of books and maps and suggestions what to do in the area. In Biggar I ate delicious Indian dinner at the Taj Mahal (where else ;-)) and there are also some other options. Place to come back.

Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland, sits amongst the rolling hills of the Southern Uplands. The peaceful village is a perfect get-away and offers a number of holiday options whether it’s for a long weekend or a couple of weeks.
The 18th century cottage was built during the lead mining boom and has recently been updated into a comfortable and cosy retreat ideal for a family or group of friends wanting to get away. The cottage has two lovely wood burners and plenty of space for everyone to relax. GROUND FLOOR Sitting room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and toilet with shower over bath, and a double bedroom. FIRST FLOOR Double bedroom, twin bedroom (narrow staircase to upstairs with handrail on one side only) OTHER FACILITIES Wood burners in living room and dining room, bed linen and towels provided, handwash in the bathroom, Freeview TV, electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge freezer, washing up liquid and tea towels, plenty of off-road parking.
Wanlockhead is perfect if you just want to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With the Southern Upland Way on your doorstep there are lovely walks all around the area. Galloway Forest Park is within easy reach, as well as Caerlaverock Wetland Centre, both perfect for wildlife watching. Wanlockhead is on the South West Coastal 300 route and is a great location for visiting all the highlights as day trips instead of driving the full circuit. If it’s history you’re interested in then Wanlockhead is famous for it’s Lead Mining Museum and Tour (peak season only) which involves going into an 18th century mine and visiting two miner’s cottages to learn about life in those days. In the summer months you can do some gold panning and board the train to Leadhills, the neighbouring village, on the track that was built in 1900 to transport the lead from the mines. Robert Burns enthusiasts will already know that he spent a night here in Wanlockhead in 1789, repaying the blacksmith for shodding his horse, Pegasus, with a poem. Burn's Birthplace Museum at Alloway is about an hour away and Robert Burns House in Dumfries is about 40 minutes. For those who are looking for something a bit more active there are lots of options for walks of varying lengths and there is a 9-hole golf course in Leadhills and Lowther Hills Ski Club nearby. For something a lot more active the 7 Stains Mountain Biking routes surround this area of Scotland. Slightly further afield you will find the beautiful Drumlanrig Castle, about half an hours drive, and Edinburgh and Glasgow both just an hours drive away. Whatever you decide to do during the day, you can finish off by heading down to the Wanlockhead Arms for a drink.
  • Dawn’s cottage is more spacious than you would ever think. We were worried about the adverse weather before arrival but Dawn reassured us with her prompt and clear communication, addressing any concerns that we had. The wood burning stoves are a lovely feature and the house is very well equipped for all eventualities. Given the bad weather and the age of the pretty, traditional cottage, it was VERY warm and cosy and we never felt cold. We will definitely return and use this as a base as the Lowther Hills are an understated area of beauty that is not too overcommercialised compared to some other areas of Scotland. Overall a great experience!

    Nicola2020-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Dawn's cottage is perfect if you want a cosy place to stay that feels like it's in the middle of nowhere (but is actually quite easy to get to). Dog friendly and very good value.

    Sophie2020-01-02T00:00:00Z
  • Brilliant place to stay, so nice and peaceful and very relaxing for us all, ( 6 adults) the kitchen has everything in it that you could ever need as do the bedrooms, bathroom and dining room. Garden is big, nice and enclosed for pets and has lots of space for parking, we had three cars! Great walks round about and a hotel along the road which allows dogs which is always a bonus. Would love to return in the Spring or Summer months . We had a lovely stay over Christmas and the weather was kind to us too. Dawn is great at communicating and check in and out was very easy.

  • The pictures do not to this place justice! It's perfect for a long weekend away. She was brilliant with communication and very helpful. She left little treats for us which made all the difference. The village itself is lovely too, great tour of the mines and old library, followed but a pint or two is recommended! Sue provided wood also which was great after a long drive. We would definitely stay here again. thanks.

Open fire is a great feature after a day in the country. Be aware there is no WiFi or phone signal - but that’s the beauty of the location!! Cottage is a 2 minute walk from the local Inn which has a friendly welcome and decent food served all day - and wifi if you really need it! We look forward to a return trip soon

  • Delightful little cottage in a beautiful part of Scotland. It's about 10 miles off the m74 so great for driving to from Glasgow. There was a fire lit for us arriving. The cottage was still quite cold for the first 24 hours we were there. Sandy and sue had provided a mountain of firewood though. Kept the fire going the whole time we were awake and still had loads of wood to spare. Apart from that, the cottage is well styled with a modern looking finish. No Internet or phone service but honestly this was a plus point for us. Sandy and Sue couldn't have been friendlier too. Beautiful landscape and getaway for us. Just what we needed.

    Andy2017-01-03T00:00:00Z
  • The cottage was perfect.. it had everything we needed and it was a relaxing time. We didn't meet Sue ...but everything was neat and clean. Thank you... we hope to come back in the summer.

  • Birkwood Cottage is simply stunning - beautiful inside and out with many extra touches like bread and milk or the fireplace prepared for lighting. Would love to come back for a week or longer next time instead of two days.
